Bollywood Does Superheros -- Have a Look at Krrish
Filed under: Action, Foreign Language, Scripts, Exhibition, Movie Marketing, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Cinematical Indie
I don't know if you ever heard of the first one, but Bollywood's first cinema superhero is on his way back to the silver screen. You can catch a glimpse of Krrish (the Hindi caped crime-fighter) in a production shot here -- he looks every bit the part of a superhero, down to the requisite attractive female standing nearby. The film cost a whopping 10 million dollars (which apparently translates into 400 plus rupee*) and will debut later this week on the 24th. I can't claim to have seen the original flick, but from what I understand, Krrish was granted his powers by an alien being of some sort, and now uses Singapore as his home. Batman has Gotham, Superman has Metropolis, Krrish has Singapore. As soon as I saw this poster, my fanboy geekiness kicked in, and I now want to see this movie (and its 2003 prequel) very much. I mean, look at the dude, he has a mask, a black costume, and he's standing on a building at night. Aside from that, I'd really like to see a Bollywood interpretation on the Superhero action flick theme. If anyone out there in our audience has seen this film, I'd appreciate a recommendation.
*Am I the only one who thinks of The Legend of Zelda every time I see that form of currency? Part of me suspects the peoples of India hide their coinage in large clumps of grass and clay pots outside their homes.

Hmm, I haven't even seen Koi..Mil Gaya (We've/I've Found/Met someone), the 2003 movie that was basically a mashup of E.T. and Forrest Gump, where the alien, ("Jadoo" = Magic) gave this retarded old-looking kid (Robin Williams "Jack" type) superpowers. And probably featured an extremely cliched plotline, characters and dialogue.
This movie (called Krrish, i'm guessing, just because, as marketing goes, a version of the name Krish, is much more retrievable if it's spelt, Krrish), features the son of the original kid, (played by the same actor) who isn't retarded, but has the superpowers. Probably going to be as corny as the first one, but I might watch this one, just to see how they treat the whole Superhero thing.
As a self professed geek, I wouldn't very much advise you to watch too many mainstream bollyflicks and expect much from them, as they're playing to a much younger/escapist audience for the majority, outside the cities. (Not that mainstream hollyflicks are much better)
Oh, BTW, there are a million of us named Link.
(which is actually possible, since there's a billion of us overall)

You can visit the film's official site at www.krrishthemovie.com to see some clips. No superhero action, but you can see the absurdly muscled lead actor doing some great Bollywood song/dance routines. Let's see Brandon Roush kick up his heels!
BTW, I think you went backwards on your currency joke -- US$10 million is nearly half a billion Indian rupees.

I've been forced to sit through many Bollywood films and I've detested all but a very select few which includes oscar nominee Lagaan. That being said, expect to find nothing but a tired melodrama with a few song and dance sequences. The superhero will be poorly acted at best and can probably summed up with two or three cliches. There will be no character complexity and the movie will leave you scratching your eyes out. This is simply my prediction based on past experiences and I haven't seen it so take my premature review with a grain of salt. However, beware of the fact that nearly all films from the subcontinent of India have the same tired storyline with a few twists thrown in, there will be love, dancing and oodles of stupid filmaking.

"the Hindi caped crime-fighter"
I am Hindu, I speak Hindi, thank you very much.
PS: we do hide our rupees in grass and clay pots. Sometimes if you ram your sword into a tree, a few rupees may fall out.

I like superhero movies, and I like musicals ... Why can't I get a good superhero musical here (in the US)? You know ... Without it being a comedy.

Ok!!! I was all surprise to see Krrish featured out here.
Krrish is a mainstream Bollywood movie which in all certainity would not appeal to most of the audiences of the site.
The movie releases on June 23rd. And, it looks destined for major success. Don't ask me how?

I am of Pakistani Origin and watch a selected few of HIGH PROFILE Bollywood Movies (cos lets face it, most of them are lame).
This is MOST CERTAINLY a HIGH-CLASS release starring Hrithik (pronounced 'Rithik') Roshan who in my opinion will make a mark in HOLLYWOOD one day (may it be a small one, but still) unlike other Bollywood stars like Aishwarya Rai who is just there (in Hollywood) cos she is SO DAMN BEAUTIFUL!
There was an article a while back detailing that Hrithik Roshan may have landed himself a role in the upcoming Rambo 4! (this may be JUST a rumour) BUT if the plot is to be believed which has some Afghanistan orientaion, this may prove to be true. ALSO Bollywood LEGEND Amithab Bachan was subjected to the same rumour of being in Rambo 4 but will play an Indian General! Pretty Cool, heh!
If you look at Hrithik Roshan, you will see he has all the markings of a COMPLETE star. LOOKS, Height, Physique and most importantly Acting ability. He is ALSO an incredible dancer (but that won't appeal as much to Hollywood audiences so its not worth making a big 'hoo haa' about, worth mentioning anyhow)
It is true he may not be perfect in ALL these catergories but is STILL well established in EVERY ASPECT! Making him the MOST bankable star for India's VERY OWN SUPERHERO!
Whilst watching this movie (you must remember) - this is a BOLLYWOOD movie, so it will be cheesy, VERY CHEESY! It is important NOT to take it seriously or you won't enjoy it. You will see many, i repeat MANY comparisons and (lets face it) COMPLETE rip-offs of Hollywood Scenes and Moments. You may hear some MUSIC that has been taken DIRECTLY from a Hollywood Action feature.
The Film 'Krrish' is a SEQUEL to 'Koi... Mil Gaya' made in 2003 (a remake of E.T.) Both the original AND Krrish have been Directed by Hrithik Roshan's father, Rakesh Roshan. Rakesh ALSO proposed that this may not be the last in the series... :)
Sorry for going on for ages, watch the film (dont take it seriously) and enjoy it!

One of the major cinema chains in Australia has been playing Bollywood movies. I'll be watching this one for sure. Most of the Chinese cinemas have closed down so it's good to get some non-Hollywood movies. To tell the truth I have been enjoying the Bollywood movies a lot more than anything Hollywood has produced recently.

So, heres the deal. This movie, however lame it may look to people here, is gonna make good money.
But OP, please dont try and watch its prequel (Koi Mil Gaya)! Its a bad mishmash of ET and Forrest Gump.
And there was a movie called 'Superman' made in Hindi (for those who know Indian Cinema, Punit Issar and Dharmendra starred in it). It was pretty bad a movie, or course. And there was a movie called 'Zoro', if you count him as superhero. So, chuck all the hype about the first superhero movie, this could be the first superhero movie with half decent special effects and action sequence.

That Zelda comment was priceless. I think the same thing and it would confuse the heck out of me growing up when ever I'd hear it mentioned on the news or something. All I could picture was people running around paying for everything with big shiney gems.

Just watched Krrish's premiere in my country today.
All Bolly style, but it's as straight as the superhero movies can be. Its got all the superhero flicks' elements.the background details, smart and manipulative sweetheart, crazy villains and good action. The action choreography by Tony Ching Siu tung (Hero & Flying Dagger) are really marvelous for the 'rubberbody' Hrithik. Well, count other Indian's superhero movies such as Mr India, Shiva Ka Insaaf & Superman, this one's sure a hell of a breakthrough.

lol....This film will be pretty bad but I'm thinking that Bollywood and Marvel should come to soem agreement and make a Bollywood Spider-man flick...minus all the songs. Well okay, i'll allow a few, but Marvel amde a mini-comic book series with an Indian version of Spidey and the green goblin was this hindu demon-type thing...so the idea is actually quite good and, if done correctly, should make for a good film. It might even attract attention rom over here, in the west. Although, it might get a negative response if they completely skrew up spider-man, but so long as they do it WELL, then there u go. Indian Spider-man. Tis a good idea.....lets just hope sum1 clever reads this and follows it through - AND MAKES IT GD!
DNT SKREW IT UP
AM TELLIN U - DON'T
u reaally don't want to

I've seen it twice now. The film is awesome, a good blind of East and West. The action and special effects are good. I thought the final fight scene was awesome and I loved the computer that tells the future - Welcome to the future!
The super villain is the guy who plays captain Nemo in League of Extraordinary gentleman.
It's not a straight out super-hero film though. It's more of a light hearted romance and comedy, with some science fiction and superheroism mixed in.
There is obviously another sequel in the pipelines, and from rumours, it seems like the alien will be back in the next sequel. This is going to become Bollywood's biggest franchise, almost as historic as Superman was for Hollywood.
It's good to see a Superhero, that isn't made by Hollywood. It's definitely a film for superhero geeks. Krrish is cool lol

Krrish was always going to be "THE MOVIE" for Indian viewers.Indian movies were always abt love stories, family dramas and freak action. But Indians are now clearly fed up of such monotonous stuffs. This was clearly marked by the Magical Director Rakesh Roshan when he made the first Sci-Fi movie in India i.e."Koi..Mil Gaya",the success of which need not be mentioned.
Krrish was just the movie which shud hav followed after KMG.The intellegent director Rakesh is,he is taking the right steps towards making the actual block buster Super Hero movie parallel to Superman ,Spiderman and Batman for Indian viewers!!
And who better than Hrithik Roshan to play the super boy!
I feel he has one of the best Physique,Height,Looks and Body than I have ever seen even in Hollywood starz! He is better than any one!!!
I feel the next movie in this series is going to be a BOOM!!
Hollywood just watch out for this Indian Super Hero!!
