Rice's Christ Goes to the Movies
I bet that, when Anne Rice left vampires and witches for the Lord, you thought we wouldn't see any more of her novels make the jump to celluloid, right? Well, you were wrong (And, yes, I was too. We all make mistakes.): The rights to Rice's Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt -- the first in a planned quartet about the life of Christ -- have been acquired by Good News Holdings, a production company formed last fall with the stated goal of creating "faith-based content in multimedia formats." [As an aside, I wonder where Rice's passionate return to the church leaves her non-Gothic novels. Because I would officially flip out if someone made a movie of Cry to Heaven or The Feast of All Saints. Though I guess all the gay lovin' in Cry to Heaven might not fit with Rice's current sensibility. Dammit.]Rice herself has been hired to write the screenplay and, given her tremendous regard for The Passion of the Christ, expect it to be bloody (when possible -- the book only covers Jesus' life from birth to his family's move from Egypt to Nazareth) and realistic. But in English, one hopes. The plan is to have the film in theaters in time for Christmas, 2007.

Being a devoted aficionado of Anne Rice, I would like to begin how deeply sad I am that we will not be able to look forward to her continuation of all of our beloved characters in the Vampire series and The Mayfair Chronicles.
And I had been breathlessly awaiting the mini series of The Witching Hour- does anyone know what happened to that?
However, in my adoration of Anne Rice, I can only take a guess that the death of her beloved Stan had a hand in her sudden turn from the dark side, although Christianity has always played a huge part in all her books.
I have not read her new work, although I will- when I am ready to say farewell to the Mayfairs. The Talamasca. And the Vampires. Until then, I give Anne her due in that she is a brilliant writer, in a league of her own, and I wish her the solace she needs to continue her creativity.
I am sure many will mourn her work that has has slipped into the fog, and many I know feel betrayed. (Count myself in the above)
But if you are truly a fan of her work, I suppose we only owe it to her to stand by her and attempt to understand her, and actually enjoy it.
We can only hope that she will not abandon the world she so geniusly gave us, and continue with her old work as well.
Carry on, Dear Anne, you are not forsaken.

We're doomed! We're so doomed! Why did they have to be so cruel and make another movie based on this selfish woman's work?!

I agree with Madam Zuma. I'll miss the vampire world and the Mayfairs...but because my own struggles with my faith, I don't know when I'll be ready to read any of Ann's new books.

It was HBO or Showtime movie (Feast of All Saints), but still not a cinema movie. It had Jasmine Guy in it. I was all excited because I love Rice and am a descendant of gens de couleur libre. But I have to say, the movie was not that good. Maybe I had higher expectations than I should. It was great for giving people an idea of the history but the rest of it was really disappointing.

Madam Zuma and Ann's Fan have said it so well. I will miss my favorite escapist passtime. The Vampire's and the Mayfair Witches will be sorely missed. Her other books, especially CRY TO HEAVEN and THE FEAST OF ALL SAINTS, are also among my favorites. So I will stand by her. I will, someday, read her new series. But not now. She has moved to a place where I am not yet ready to visit. I sincerely hope that her new spiritual journey brings some peace to her life. Perhaps then, she can once again create and explore new and wonderful worlds to share with us.

Like Antoinette I don't know that I'm ready for the jump to Ann Rice the christian series but what I do know is that God gives us all a talent that we sometimes don't recognize and If she feels this is what she has to do now I say explore it to the fullest But Ann you were given such a wonderous ability by the Lord himself and I don't think he will look down upon you with anything but praise. Don't abandon the Vampire or Mayfair stories for too long. I believe God will understand.....NeNe

For those of you who feel not quite ready to visit Anne's "new world" of fiction, my suggestion is to just trust the author that you enjoy so much. Personally I am thrilled that she has returned to her original Christian faith and feel that she has the potential to be a leader in the faith walk of a great many people.

Madam Zuma has said it so well. I am not going to say that I am sad that she has turned to this new spirituality, because that is her life and like Madam Zuma has already said, perhaps she is doing this because she needs solace which can so readily be achieved through God, but I must say that I am sad that she has just stopped all of her previous work. What shall I do without my vampire novels? But as NeNe has remarked, perhaps in time she will be ready to come back to the old Anne and continue her old marvelous work. So I wish her peace with herself and God and that she might have the ability to perhaps continue what we all so love. At the same time, let's all sample the new work. Being Anne Rice, I'm sure it will be sensational with that wonderful flavor we all know so well.

Fear not fans, there is a writer to fill the void. Try Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series. It has everything you are looking for!

No one can take Anne's place, or fill the void - no one. If she had to end her vampire/Mayfair series' anywhere, I'm glad she did it there. The characters left, can still live on and be eternal.
As for her new book - I bought it when it first came out, but have yet to read it. Hearing this news, I will probably start soon, though.

THE FEAST OF ALL SAINTS miniseries was extremely well done imho. In a way, it was better than a theatrical release in that they got approx 4 hours to tell the story versus only 2, , which helped the movie stay VERY faithful to the story in Anne's novel (instead of skipping plot points, merging characters, etc.).
In fact, Anne was SOOOOO happy with the screenwriter's adaptation of TFOAS that she hired him to adapt THE WITCHING HOUR miniseries. Which, of course, was never made. Damn, I wonder why the heck not? That trilogy is brilliant!
Okay, enough ranting. Btw, I haven't read Rice's CHRIST OUT OF EGYPT but I probably will sooner or later.
Be good.

Oh, one more thing. Even though Anne has returned to Catholocism, she is still VERY Pro-Gay rights. She even believes the Catholic Church should begin blessing Gay marriages via sacred unions.
And her son, the writer Christopher Rice, is Gay, so I doubt she'll be turning her back on this issue anytime soon.
Trust me, folks. We need people like Anne in the church. I'm glad she's there spreading the Good News of embracing diversity. May God bless her!

I READ AN INTERVIEW WITH ANNE RICE WHEN THE JESUS BOOK CAME OUT. AND HER POLITICS SEEMED TO BE UNCHANGED FROM THE TIME BEFORE THE JESUS BOOK. THEY ARE NEW ORLEANS STYLE LAID BACK MODERATE LIBERAL WITH SOME REAL PROBLEMS ABOUT ABORTION. BY THE WAY, THAT'S PRETTY MUCH MY PHILOSPHY TOO. AND SHE MADE A POINT TO REJECT THE INTOLERANT ANTI_GAY STANDS OF THE CHRISTIAN RIGHT.

Anne Rice's new book is excellent. It portrays Christ from a totally different perspective. While I thoroughly enjoyed her "dark side" books, I was impressed by the versatility she shows with this new book. It's a quick read but very thought-provoking.
