News from Slackerwood: Patriotism Swells in the Heart of the American Bear
Filed under: News From Slackerwood, Kevin Smith, Other Festivals

It's a holiday weekend/week, and some of us wish that local theaters held more special screenings on our days off next week. However, theaters seem to assume that people want to do stuff outdoors on July 4, so many ongoing film series are on hold for the week. Alamo Downtown will be closed on Monday and Tuesday.
A few theaters are celebrating the Independence Day holiday. Alamo Lake Creek is showing Red Dawn on Tuesday night. The Paramount is showing vaguely patriotic-themed films all week: Sergeant York and Pride of the Yankees on Monday and Wednesday, and Patton on Thursday and Friday.
- This week's AFS@Dobie collaborative screening is the film Lady Vengeance, which will play all week at the Dobie. Also opening at the Dobie today is Drawing Restraint 9.
- The Movies in the Park series has moved to Round Rock this month, and Friday night's film is The Wizard of Oz. The movie starts at sundown at Old Settlers Park and admission is free.
- The Paramount's Summer Film Classics series rolls on through the holiday week. One of their most popular films, Breakfast at Tiffany's, is playing on Saturday and Sunday in a double-feature with Roman Holiday. You also can see Jesus Christ, Superstar on Saturday and Sunday.
- Alamo Downtown is bringing back their sweet sing-along for The Muppet Movie on Sunday night. The film will be subtitled with song lyrics in case you want to sing along with "The Rainbow Connection" and can't remember all the words. If you want to see the unsubtitled movie for free without audience participation, Alamo South Lamar is showing it Monday-Friday as this week's Summer Kids' Camp selection. (Thankfully, they are not serving frogs' legs at any of the screenings.)
- This week's Terror Thursday series at Alamo Downtown features a culty dark comedy with a twist of gruesome horror: Parents, the 1989 film directed by Bob Balaban. The movie is worth seeing just for the dialogue about leftovers. Admission is free for the midnight screening.
- Austin Film Society has just announced another big preview screening and party: Clerks II, on Thursday, July 13. Kevin Smith will be there for a Q&A afterwards. Tickets go on sale for AFS members on Monday, and for the general public on Thursday.
- Quick congratulations to Austin filmmaker Steve Collins, who won the Target Filmmaker award at the Los Angeles Film Festival for his feature Gretchen, which premiered at SXSW this year.
