Spider-Man 3: The Black Cat is Out
Filed under: Action, Casting, Fandom, Scripts, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels
On the heels of the much-discussed Spider-Man 3 trailer now available for viewing on internet sites everywhere, a savvy blogger over at Film Ick has put together a rather interesting plot summary of what we know so far. He uses a mix of insider "sources" who have worked on the film and smart conjecture based on what we've seen in the trailer and stills. Note, none of this is in any way official, so take it for what it is. What follows are the most interesting claims he makes, but SPOILER HATERS BEWARE -- I can't promise it will be free from secrets. - Fans should stop whining about the Venom suit. It only looks like a boring chromo-variant of the red and blue suit when it is on Spider-Man because the symbiote is clinging to the Spider-suit. It will look more like "classic Venom" when it takes over Mr. Brock. Maybe that's a cheap argument, but I can live with it if it's true.
- Harry, as the Goblin, dies during a final act of redemption, saving Peter in a fight with Sandman.
- Scenes inside Curt Conner's lab provide a very clear set-up for him turning into the Lizard ... but it is nothing more than teaser. The Lizard himself is being saved for a possible sequel.
- The final battle of the film will be a four way battle royale between Spidey, Venom, Sandman, and the Goblin. Sounds wonderful to me.
- Bruce Campbell is in the film as Quentin Beck (only Beck, not his alter-ego) in a small, amusing part. Unlike the Lizard, this is not seen as set-up for a future Mysterio film. Sad.
- Despite being in many early drafts, the Black Cat will NOT make any significant appearance in the film. She was initially planned to be a love interest/foil for Peter Parker, but Gwen Stacey is taking care of that now. There is VERY strong speculation this is due to Dunst (M.J.) declaring her desire to have nothing to do with any further Spider-Man films. This will hit True Believers pretty hard, as it violates the classic comisc continuity of Parker love interests, but it might work. The franchise could probably survive without Dunst, but it may not be able to survive without Raimi, who is also rumored to be ready to be finished the web-slinger.

Yayyyy sounds good!! Too bad it wasn't noted that these are spoiler notes. :( Why doesn't Dunst want to continue in the movies?? Doesn't she know by now how much it's banking her bank account for the money will only get larger as the movies go on. I'll take her place. Hehe

Yeah!! I never actually believed before that Venom himself would be a main character. This is gonna be intense!
And I say, forget Mary Jane! She did a arguably terriffic job ruining the character of Mary Jane in the movies. I'm glad they're starting off fresh again with Gwen.

I really enjoyed the first two sequels of Spider man and my favorite villain is Doctor Otto Octavious or Doc Ock. His metallic tentacles really looks scary on the screen.

Well, about the Venom suit I don't mind at all being about a chromo-variant of Spidey's costume. But why when it attaches to Brock it is not a "chromo-variant" of his costume and is different?. Not that i mind, of course, but the logical in this...Mr Raimi, what are you doing? ;)

Why does Gwen have to be in it. It would be a whole better movie if she was Spidergirl. It just doesnt make sense. Gwen should be evil.

I too can live with your Venom explanation. The symbiotic set-up between it and Spiderman was not extravagent either. The pics of Peter united with it were simple - the shots from the trailer look similar to me. Venom's fiercenss and evil look are generated from his connection with the much more prominent evil nature within Brock. I am honestly excited to see how this movie will play out. As far as Dunst goes, she makes an okay MJ, but her fangish teeth seem to ruin it for me. With all her money, you think she'd hire a decent ortho to fix her grill. I won't miss her much. Unfortunately, it's too difficult to find a replacement MJ now.

I doubt all these are spoilers because I read Eddie Brock will not be Venom until the end of the movie, setting up part 4. A four way battle is way too much, even if done right.

I'd rather have Gwen than MJ. I always loved Gwen and she was the perfect woman for Spidey. Let MJ go her own way as her and Peter were and still are clearly not meant to be together. Gwen is Peter's one true love. I hope they don't kill her like they did in the comics.

Kirsten Dunst makes a great MJ, the series will take a dive without her. Toby is a really awesome peter / spidey but he cant carry the whole thing alone, he needs help and the whole drama between MJ, peter, and spidey is what made the first 2 movies what they are, no more mj = no more spidey = no more movies. Kirsten Dunst needs to do at least parts 3,4,5,6 then she can think of other things like Playboy.

(Note: I haven't seen the trailer, yet.)
I hope to god Sandman isn't going to be in the third movie. Personally, I think he's a pretty dumb villain. I wouldn't go for the Harry = Goblin thread either, but that's just something I would do if I was the screenwriter, which I clearly am not, so it might work if it's done right.
Unless I am mistaken, Venom's the main baddie! Huzzah!!! Venom ROCKS!!!As far as Gwen Stacy is concerned, It's not something I would go for. But, like I said earlier, it could work.
They better not screw this flick up a-la "X-Men:The Last Stand." (For once, the critics were right...)

Perhaps Miss Dunst is quitting the Spider-Man series to take acting lessons. We can only hope.

I only hope that they don't try to fit too much stuff into the movie without developing the characters like the recent marvel travesty (Cough*, Cough*, X Men: The Last Stand, cough*, cough*)
The first two spideys worked because They spent time on the real plight of the hero and villans and made you see the factors which contributed to what they were thinking and feeling.
(e.g Norman Osbournes board room scene which pushes him over the edge to be the green goblin and cause some real chaos.....Or Doc Ock's conversation with his arms that make him decide to turn to crime and no holds barred tactics to finish his dream project.)
I'm just saying if scenes like those are missing it will severly mess up the films impact....THINK ABOUT IT!!!!!
