Bizarre Rumor of the Day: A Grease 2 Remake
Filed under: Music & Musicals, Paramount, RumorMonger, Newsstand, Remakes and Sequels
Kim confessed last week that Grease is one of her guilty pleasures; many of you chimed in to agree with her in the comments (though I didn't comment I, too, am right there with you). So far, though, no one has dared confess their affection for Grease 2, possibly the worst sequel of all time. Granted, Maxwell Caulfield is hot, in an 80s sort of way, and it's always fun to see Michelle Pfeiffer singing about the seasons. But, really, most of the pleasure the movie offers comes from laughing at it, which is rarely a good sign. There's a completely bizarre rumor floating around today that Paramount, instead of leaving well enough alone, is actually thinking about remaking the movie. (Which, you know, is sort of diverting -- at least instead of remaking a classic and pissing everyone off, this would be another version of a bad movie to which very few people can claim any true attachment.) Do you think they're embarrassed? And after 20+ years, want to correct all of Grease 2's wrong? It's impossible to know how seriously the studio might actually be thinking about this (or, indeed, if they're thinking about it at all), but the story from Sky News claims that "they're going to add some new songs, spice up the cast, and get a stronger script." Man alive. Hollywood, friends, is a very odd place.

I take it they've never heard the say "Let sleeping dogs lie". It never ceases to amaze me how major studios love to flush millions down the toilet like this.

I'll confess my affection for Grease 2. I think it has a sense of humor that Grease (a great film, but a totally different one) didn't have. Some of the songs are priceless- Reproduction and Let's Do It For Our Country come to mind. Besides, Michelle is hot, and the Caulfied character gives hope to nerds everywhere. For God's sake, Joe Piscopo is in it. I had the discussion with my wife a few weeks ago, and we both favored it over Grease.

I've seen Grease 2 several times, and I'll admit I have an affection to the movie. But the real reason I watch it is for Michelle Pfeiffer...especially the song "Cool Rider" great song...

Grease 2 is a classic. Cheesey YES but still classic in the sense that you will honestly NEVER see Michelle Pfeiffer play a role like that! It's quarky and cheesey but it's fun to watch and keeps you entertained. You can attempt to tell yourself that you don't like the movie but deep down you know everytime you go bowling in the back of your mind you're singing *We're gonna score tonight* :)

Grease 2 is one of my favorite films! It is fun, the musical numbers are catchy and I thought all the characters worked well together. They seemed to have fun making it and I had fun watching it! It is difficult to believe so many people slam this film when there are far more with less artistic integrity.

Grease 2 was a bad film, but hardly the worst sequel of a movie ever. Superman IV, Ghostbusters II were worse than Grease 2. The problem with Grease 2 is that it seemed unnecessary. It was hardly as relatable as Grease 1 was. Subtle humor was in the first that wasn't in the 2nd. Plus, the songs were much better in the 1st one..... G2 had "Shoot the ball" as a song at a bowling alley? "Cool rider"? G2 had a couple of decent songs, but others just seemed forced and/or sung badly with bad dancing.
Why remake the second one? Why not just create a decent 3rd one that takes the best of both and at least is believeable?
