News from Slackerwood: Scanner First, Safety Last

Of course, the big Austin film buzz this week is about A Scanner Darkly, which opens today at Arbor. I'm waiting to see the film again until the July 15 screening at Alamo South Lamar, when composer Graham Reynolds will perform selections from the movie's soundtrack before the film. In the meantime, there are many other special screenings and events in town.
  • The AFS@Dobie collaboration is opening The Death of Mr. Lazarescu in Austin this week. Dobie is also opening The King  today. And the Arbor theater is bringing the documentary The Heart of the Game to town for the first time.
  • The Goonies is playing Austin theaters again: this time at Alamo Lake Creek at midnight on Friday and Saturday and at noon on Saturday. Free Baby Ruth bars with admission.

  • The Paramount's Summer Classic Film series is in full swing this week: a double-feature of Stagecoach and Red River on Saturday, To Kill a Mockingbird and Inherit the Wind on Sunday and Monday, a Harold Lloyd double-feature on Tuesday and Wednesday of Safety Last (shown above) and The Freshman, and a Marx brothers double of Monkey Business and Animal Crackers next Friday.
  • The Austin Film Society series "De/Re:Constructing the Narrative: Global Experiments in Film" starts up again on Tuesday night at Alamo Downtown with Woman is the Future of Man, a Korean film from 2004.
  • Nueva Onda's free monthly outdoor screening takes place on Wednesday night at 8 pm. This month's theme is "Love Hurts," and the films include The Heart Collector, an animated short that I enjoyed at SXSW in March, and Momma's Boy, a short from Austin filmmaker John Bryant that played at Sundance this year.
  • Free Kevin Bacon: Footloose is playing outdoors at Central Market on Wednesday night at 8:30 pm. I heard the Central Market screenings get pretty crowded, so arrive early to stake out a spot with your blanket or lawn chair.
  • This week's Summer Kids Camp movie at Alamo South Lamar tempts me to play hookey from work: Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit will play Monday through Friday at 1 pm, and admission is free.
  • Alamo Downtown is showing the 2005 documentary The Grace Lee Project Tuesday through Thursday nights.
  • An offer you can't refuse: A free screening of The Godfather outdoors at The Glenn on Thursday night. Bring blankets, but The Glenn doesn't allow lawn chairs.
