An Update on Speed Racer

Last time we checked up on the big screen version of Speed Racer, Martha reported the Wachowski boys were supposedly taking over the project, with plans to both write and direct a live-action film. After Vince Vaughn sold his pitch for Speed Racer back in 2004, a ton of giant names have circled the project. However, nothing seemed to be moving forward until the Wachowski rumor surfaced.
Now, according to IGN, it's been confirmed the Wachowski's are definitely doing Speed Racer and Vince Vaughn is still involved in the film. Most likely, the actor will remain in a supporting role taking on the character Racer X. Currently, the Wachowski's have begun work on the script, though production on Speed Racer will not be starting up anytime soon. The way it's going, I'd figure this one won't begin shooting until 2008, with a possible summer 2009 release. But that's just a wild guess. I still remain pumped up about the project and am very interested to see the Wachowski's take on this classic cartoon. I'd imagine 'extremely trippy' would be one of the ways to describe what we'll eventually see up on screen.

Actually, this sounds pretty interesting. I like the Vince Vaughn casting as Racer X, but the perfect actor to play the Racer X role: Mickey Rourke.

For some reason I'm picturing Jake Gyllenhaal in the title role. Yea or nay, anybody?

You should check out an actor by the name of Tom Pelphrey. He is currently on the CBS soap "Guiding Light", and he looks like a younger "Keanu Reeves".

As long as the Mach 5 and Shooting Star are in the film, unaltered -- think "well, we thought people wanted to see more of a NASCAR flick so we made them NASCAR type cars" -- I'm in line already. But if they fark with the set-up too much, it'll be another waste of film that will beg remaking in another 5 or 10 years.

To clarify, I mean to say as long as they take the HELLBOY route and remain true to the source, at least in certain respects, I'm in line. I remember all the stories that surfaced about changes the suits wanted to make to Hellboy -- "can he have a dog?" "can he be a boy who changes into Hellboy?" "can he have a Hellmobile?" -- but the director stayed true and made a damn fun movie that was in line with the comics.
My desire is to see several elements of the cartoon stories rolled into the film. Little nods, too, like having a car carrier called "The Mammoth Car" or their home being near Lake Icychill.
But the cars need to look like the cars. Don't give me a box with a "5" painted on the door and call it the Mach 5. The only worthwhile redesigns were some of the stuff Dark Horse did to it back in the 90s; slightly stubbier versions of the '5 and the Shooting Star (Racer X's car for the uninitiated).
The tagline should be "He was racing to win -- now he's racing for his life" or something that's a play on the U.S. theme song.

You can't be serious ?! Wachowski's doing 'Speed Racer" ? What a freakin` waste ! It just doesn't make sense. Did the Wachowski's SELL-OUT ? "The Matrix", V for Vendetta, then "Speed Racer" ?
I denounce the Wachowski's.. if this is true. I bet this is just another stupid Internet rumor. Speed Racer ? What a joke ! I thought the Wachowski's has foresight ? I starting to believe they're not as talented or creative as depicted by thier previous hit movies.
PS.
