Captain Jack Obliterates Box Office

Holy macaroni, movie geeks! I know I told you that Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest was a huge ball of summertime fun -- but I didn't expect you all to run out and see it on opening day! The long-awaited and VERY entertaining Pirates2 managed to absolutely smash the holy hell of out of the previous opening day record ... and it did so by about five million bucks!According to the always reliable BOM, the previous one-day record-holder was a black & white Croatian indie flick entitled Revenge of the Sith, which made $50 million on May 19th, 2005. Today we have a new record holder; Gore Verbinski's piratical follow-up made an estimated $55.5 million on opening day ... and that's a whole lotta treasure, folks. (I guess it's too late to get a good HSX deal for next May's Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.)
I share this news mainly because it's always interesting when a new record is demolished, but also because I saw the sequel for a second time last night, and my affection for the flick has grown even stronger. (People actually applauded when the movie was over, and that sort of thing just doesn't usually happen in Philadelphia. We're all cynical and stuff.) Anyway, the record for biggest Friday - Sunday opening weekend is held by the first Spider-Man entry with $114 million; I suspect our favorite webslinger might end up in second place by the end of the weekend.
So after 30-plus years of "pirates movies not being profitable," the worm has turned. With a vengeance. (And
In other news, Superman Returns' ten-day total is about $127 million.

I sort of expected huge numbers, but 55.5 mil surprised me.
The reason I was expecting huge numbers has something to do with the fact that I showed up half an hour early to a 4:30 showing in the biggest theater in Tallahassee and thought I was going to have to fight somebody for a seat. Let me once again stress that I showed up HALF AN HOUR early. This never happens. They sold the joint out. At 4:30 in the freakin afternoon!!
When my sister and I were leaving there must have been 300 people standing in line. I said, "And they're all here to see a movie about pirates."

Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania is pretty small compared to most towns. And mostly everyone goes to Hershey's Cocoaplex Theatre to see movies....not the E-town theatre. The opening time at the E-town theatre was 3:45 p.m. I got there an hour beforehand and it was sold out(i got tickets online thank goodness). They decided to add another showing of POTC 2 in another theatre at the same time. So the showing of "The Lakehouse" was canceled and they played POTC in it. Within 15 minutes of them adding the other theatre, it was sold out. At 3:45!!! I am probably one of the most obsessed people in the world and i had to go see it opening time. But i hardly expected it to be sold out in the 2 biggest theatres in the Movie Complex. And those 2 theatres are pretty big. Now, i did expect the 7:00 showing to be sold out....but only in one theatre. But I hardly expected people to come at 3:45 to see it. And i didnt know there were that many people in E-town. The movie is just that amazing and i probably will be going to see it a few more times during the course of the summer. I did get tears in my eyes, when my beloved Black Pearl went down. Haha. I told you i was obsessed. It's already broken the record for opening day. It will probably be one of the best selling movies of all time because people are just going to keep wanting to see it again and again. I, for one, can't wait for May 25 to see Pirates 3!!!

The scripts' a wretched hodge-podge, acting wooden, CGI sucks ass, direction all over and it's nothing but loud, long, and meandering. I want 2.5 hours of my life back you disneyf^ckers!

We were not able to make it to opening day as we had previous plans. I know at the one popular multiplex where I live they are showing it 15 times a day in one theatre! We are going tomorow to the 10am showing, hopefully it will not be sold out!

Hey bgdc, you may as well bite my lift nut and hope it grows back so you can have seconds. Disney, who Im extatic to say am employed by, mows down any blockbuster. I can prive it in countless ways...a few of which you may find uneasing. You loved the pirates movie, both infact..and your busting a the eyes for the final installment, your just to proud to admit it, every movie needs its critics, good and bad. Thats admirable...in a Taliban, Alquida loving kind of way.

As i had to see POTC:DMC again tonight (friend's b-day and she demanded it) I got another taste of the film. My opinion stands: it's awful. It's not even close to good. We're talking star wars movie awful. Of the 20 of us at the theater only a small percentage liked it: 4 people. Those 4 are not that swift. In fact one person who liked the film called it: "hard to follow." Uh, it was all on the screen and clear as day; poorly directed and written but still clear. Another girl said she liked it but didn't know the names of any of the characters and she thought Bill Nighy's Davey Jones became the Kraken - smart one there.
I don't think Disney or Verbinski understand how Temple of Doom or Matrix 2 they've gone with this film. They sucked the fun and energy out of the series, making it into a loud, chaotic, poorly assembled piece of stupidity with no redeeming characteristics.

I won't go so far as to say it sucks, but it just ain't that good. If you can sum it up in one word, it's overkill. It's too long. There's too many set pieces. There's too many stupid plot points. The one thing there isn't enough of is character development. There are no character arcs. Nobody changes, at least not in ways that make sense.
Can someone who has seen the film explain Elizabeth's actions toward Jack at the end of the film? To avoid a spoiler, let me just say this: I deliberately did what I did and know I'm willing to do anything to fix that. The transition just did not work for me.

For bdgc and khia,
I, for one did not think the movie suxed b/c u know what? I actually sat there and watched the movie and got the whole friggen thing. Its not confusing at all. You just need to pay attention and read into it! You also need to see the first in order to get the second soo if u didnt see the first then its your loss. The movie is the best movie in the world because u know why? It has the best people, the best set the best plot, and the best everything. Some parts are hard to follow, but thats what makes it sooo good..i mean come on you dont want a simple movie that you see 500 times and always get the same reaction. This movie allows you to find out something different each time you see it. You people just dont know good movies. And as for Jack and elizabeth...thats how the movie goes and Elizabeth had to do what she had to do in order to teach Jack a lesson. And if u dont like it then to bad because thats real life. They arnt going to make everything a happy ending so deal with it!There are going to be more things that happen in the third thats similar to what happened between Jack and Elizabeth. So you know what u people can say what you want but according to the 55.5 Million dollars spent on the opening day of the movie.. i would say that this movie is one of the best movies ever made in history along with the first one.I think POTC wins!

I NEVER said it was confusing. It's not. It's boring. Its plot is convoluted and poorly constructed but it is NOT confusing. You need to re-read my posts, chief.

Again, learn how to read. I stated clearly in my first post that I love the first film. It's tight, it's got drive, the characters change and grow and the film's a blast.

Well, i've seen it twice. Yes, twice. A friend had her b-day party so I had to sit through this sh!tfest a second time. There's nothing new in a second viewing. Same bad edits, same lackluster acting, same bad action pieces, same tired expository dialogue, same horrid CGI. It's 2.5 hours of a director and screenwriters throwing up on screen.

Ah, who talked about the ending being sad? It wasn't. It was anti-climatic, it was foretold with the subtely of an anvil on the head, it was as tepid as the rest of the film. Loud does not equal fun. A character "dying" isn't sad. Unless you have good direction and writing to make you feel sad. Trust me, the clowns behind POTC:DMC aren't looking for good. They're looking for a typical hollywood sequel - bigger, louder, longer and half as good.

Well, the three day total for this movie was an astonishing $132 million. I do believe that kicks the crap out of Spiderman's $114 million.

r u kidding me ppls? it didnt stink! it was the awesomest! well i liked the 1st one better but i was expecting that, the first movie is usually better than the second, and thats why theres gonna b a 3rd one. So if the 3rd one is bad, then u can b disappointed. But if u r getting all disappointed about the second then ur stupid, cuz the second one just jumbles up the plot so there can b a third movie. so suck it up and wait till next summer!

lets face bgdc...is right on all counts. the film sucked, it lacked drive, plot, and everything a good movie should have. Dont you know that bgdc has a reputation of..... Im sorry, none. My friends, your are fuling the fire of an alquida loving democrat whos only purpose in posting is to upset as many people as possible, and have a little chuckle. He loved the movie, and he loves....complately adores the attention he is getting with his biast...and poor judgment.
I'll tell you what my "bgdc" friend, I'll fun out to bluck buster and buy you and no one else a special gold wrapped copy of Starwars. That way when you become angry, you have something you can rant about poor acting and less than inspired preformances. :) Im sure that sounds lovely pumpkin, now dosent it.

Hey friends. As much as we do appreciate the comments and the conversations, let's try and keep things civil. I can't imagine why the word "alquida" needs to be invoked while discussing Pirate Action Part 2. ;)

The first POTC more closely expressed the character of "Captain Blood", of whom they 'borrowed' from author Rafael Sabatini and morphed into Captain Jack. He had honor, was clever, and despite his being good at being bad (which we all deeply respected), we all knew that deep down, he has a heart of gold. In POTC: DMC, they've made Captain Jack into a sleazy buffoon! What have you done with our Jack Sparrow? Where was the flipping plot going, it was all over the place?! He is like some foolish court jester rather than the debonair renegade! Instead of the one who outwits, they've made him into a nitwit!
The money they've made was due to all of our great expectations, not for what they've made it to be, a Hollywood-ized poorly written sequel. Best part of the movie is the entrance of Captain Barbosa at the end, which again gives me hope for the next POTC (am I a fool for hoping they'll get it right?) Get rid of the Davey Jones squid brigade who have no clear motive in their evil, and bring back the Captain Jack we all met and loved in the first film!

Um, sure Depp had a lot to do with the film making gazillions of dollars, but I think Rossio, Elliot and Verbinski deserve more credit than you are giving them.
