Michael Moore Updates: Sicko Status and Traverse City Film Festival
Filed under: Documentary, The Weinstein Co., Michael Moore, Other Festivals

For all of those (including us) who've been wondering where hell Michael Moore is, he has finally spoken. The controversial filmmaker wrote a letter to Anne Thompson of The Hollywood Reporter to fill everyone in on what he's up to. He's still working on Sicko, the documentary about American HMOs and pharmaceutical companies, or as he calls it, "a comedy about 45 million with no health care in the richest country on earth," and he's 75% finished with the shooting of it. Soon he will begin the editing process and claims it will be released, "sometime in 2007." His letter explains some of the reasons the production has taken so long, mainly the fact that its subject has taken him down new roads he didn't plan or know about (let's hear his critics say he hit a dead end when his theories were incorrect and he had to make stuff up; I know someone out there is thinking it). Moore also used the opportunity (or maybe it was his main reason for the letter) to promote his second annual Traverse City Film Festival, held in Northern Michigan from July 31st to August 6th. The festival is a showcase of 60 films that Moore likes, including An Inconvenient Truth, Three Kings, Hotel Rwanda and Borat (each of these films mentioned will be presented by their respective directors). Also showing is the entire filmography of Stanley Kubrick, who Moore considers, "the greatest American director of all time," presented by executive producer Jan Harlan and actors Malcolm McDowell and Matthew Modine. Last but not least is a collection of Iranian films in order to, "get to know them first this time!" Regardless of what you think of Moore, if you live near Traverse City you should attend the fest, because he's showing some damn good movies.
Anyway, that might be the most we hear from him for awhile, as he says he'll be busy working, so comment away on what he's given us for now.

Moore thinks Kubrick is the greatest American director. It figures that a fat-head would like a fat-head.

I don't think Moore would make up new theories when he hits dead ends and his original theories don't pan out. I think his starting point is making shit up, from the moment he conceives his documentaries. Hence, no worry about dead-ends.

It's probably taking so long because it's being vetted by a team of lawyers. It's easy enough to fabricate about politicians without repercussion, but fabricating about well financed companies is an invitation to a slew of lawsuits. We already know what the subtext of the film is anyway - that the canadian health system is vastly superior to the u.s. and that everyone except michael is too stupid to see that. michael will drag cancer boys and colorful toothless men to politicians offices etc. etc.

well speaking as someone who pays $330 dollars a month for my so-so health insurance, and having to listen to my republican friends complain about the same- I don't know how anyone can say what we got now is good at all. I don't know shit about Canada. I do know our system sucks. The only people that aren't complaining about this are either old or stupid.

I think he just came out of hiding because he is all out of American Flag to wipe his ass with. The country would be better off if this trouble maker stayed in his hiding place.

No the health-care system is top-notch if you are not from this country. You think that the health-care system sucks right now, wait until universal healthcare is provided by the government. Then you will really know what hell-th care is like. People will pray for HMO's. Would you like an Account Represenatative that has the attitude of a DMV worker? Or better yet, an IRS agent. That's customer service!!!

I'll repost a comment I saw over at IMDB whose view coincides exactly with mine:
"Can someone explain to me, being European, why so many Americans are so aggressive towards Michael Moore and his documentaries? He's merely pointing out why the US has slowly become a backwards society in comparison to ("old" - Rumsfeld) Europe, and tries to explain what can be done to improve your standard of living.
With a national debt of almost 9 trillion dollars, a poor economy, very expensive health care causing 20% of all Americans to lack it, 3.5 million Americans being homeless at some point in their life, a minimum wage of just $5.15 while half a trillion is being spent on defence every year (in an attempt to scare off China and fight a ridiculous war against an ideology), and so on, I think you need all help you can get. Isn't it about time to doubt your leaders a bit more? It seems to me that the whole idea of a free marktet economy driven by big business is not working out for you.
The 'best' argument I've heard so far from the anti-Moore camp is that he is fat and stupid..."

the worst I think that can be said of Moore is that he is sensationalististic and arrogant, but I am not exactly sure why he's support to be better in character than the average run of the mill Republican when unlike the Republican arguments his at least reflect the reality. Like I said- I am paying 330 bucks for health insurance, I have to wait a month to two months to see a specialist. My friend who was without insurance he had a situation where his appendix was bursting and three different hosptial sent him hom claiming it was a stomach ache b/c the didn't want to deal with it. My point is that socialized medicine may or may not be better, but I know for a fact that the system we have now is shitty.

OK Let’s break it down for the cheap seats:
Get a real job that pays well and provides affordable healthcare. Do you honestly think that a person flipping burgers at the local fast food deserves more than minimum wage? Let’s go ahead and jack up the minimum wage to 10 dollars an hour. Don’t be surprised when a number one value meal starts costing $11.00 either. It is all passed to the consumer. BTW, I’m pretty sure that your boss is not going to make up the difference in your paycheck so you can afford it. Oh yeah, the whole “spending on defense” argument is getting old. Defense is one of the major roles of the federal government not paying for someone’s healthcare benefits. Why don’t you go ahead and look into the past 100 years of Russian history to see what government control of your life can do for you. I wouldn’t want to live here.

for the record, I am a solo practicing attorney- and thats why I am paying 330 a month because the hardest hit are those small businesses like me that are paying for folks like you. So the next time you say stupid shit about flipping burger- from me to you- fuck off.

If you are an attorney and 330 bucks a month is hurting you that must say alot about your mad skills as a litigator. I pay a few hundred a month so my family can have adequate medical coverage. I guess my priorities are not to today's standards. So back at you, Matlock.

says the guy who isn't running a business. it's not about 330 per month hurting me nimrod- it's about the fact that I see my costs rising by 10 percent per year in this area. rising costs is something every busienss that wants to stay in business has to worry about. It's about the fact that b/c of nimrods like you who don't understand economies of scale and other such economic factors, you can't understand that if workers at Walmart do not have health insurance, I will have to pay for them in the form of my taxes or in the form of higher premium. We are paying higher costs - let me say this low because its clear you dont understand these things- b/c these people are uninsure - the system runs on economies of scale. the more people in it,t he cheaper it is. the more efficiently it is run the cheaper it is. the more we reduce the 1 to 2 million people sitting around pushing paper in the healthcare industry , the cheaper it is. So a large company like Walmart is skating off of payers into the sytem like me. If you got your head out of the conservative gutter, and actually ran a business rather than your mouth, you might, just might understand basic economics enough to understand how this works.

you are clearly a business genius. let me simplify this for you. 330 turns into w/ secretary about 800 bucks a month which turns into 9600 per year. each year I 've seen an increase of 10 percent cost increase in this area. i run a small solo practice which earns me 150 k a year. you do the fucking math about what that means in terms of wasted money b/c I dont know any business man worth the name who wants to see any cost go up by that ratio especially b/c of free riders like Walmart.

Wow! A man of your education has to rely on name calling. And by the way, I do know how the system works. I understand how the tax system works, too. One thing I will commend you on and that is providing health care for your worker. That shows appreciation for your employee. It's something that small businesses don't have to do.
I will tell you something that I do know something about and that is the emergency medicine and billing. Hospitals get totally douched by both foreign and domestic indigents. You as a lawyer should know that they are required by law to provide all life-saving procedures regardless of race, creed or cash-availability. Then they pass all the costs that they cannot recoup to the people that will give them money. That's people like you, me and anyone else who value their credit. Hey, three hours after my kid was born a rep from the local hospital wanted a check for a couple grand. That was a warm and cozy feeling after being up all night.
Have we mentioned the effect of litigation on the medical field and malpractice insurance premiums? That may have a little impact on the cost of things, too. Because, just like an increase in minimum wage, it is all passed on to the end consumer.
- I'm just an unfrozen-caveman emergency medical service worker, it scares me.

Michael Moore delves into areas where others are afraid to tread. He is a pioneer in the film industry. Topics like gun control, war and health insurance need coverage. Don't expect the Wall Street Journal or FOX News to report it.
