New Potter Director - M. Night?!
Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Deals, RumorMonger, Fandom, Movie Marketing, Remakes and Sequels
After four films, it has practically become a game -- name the new Harry Potter director! In what has come to be amusing referred to as the "revolving door of directors," the incredibly popular Potter franchise has featured a new helmsman with every flick after the initial two. Sure the subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) changes in style are occasionally notable, but the series itself continues to maintain powerful box office force despite the constant changing of the directorial guard. And with each successive successful film, the title becomes more and more of a prize for hopeful directors to win. It also simultaneously becomes more and more challenging; nobody wants to be the guy who screws up Harry Potter (if that is even possible). It has already been whispered that ex-Python Terry Gilliam has been approached about directing one of the remaining two (David Yates has already been attached to part five), and now a new name enters the rumor fray -- and like Gilliam, it is a biggie. M. Night Shyamalan recently said he was approached way back at the start to direct film one, but was too busy with Unbreakable at the time. What he calls the "dance" continues today, apparently, as interest is still strong in bringing Shyamalan to the Potter family. I haven't decided what I think about this yet, so comment away and help me make up my mind.

Wow, I think Shyamalan would be a great addition to the Potter franchise! He is a brilliant director, and Hogwarts is full of goodies he could use to play with his immense talents and increadible imagination. Unfortunatly, the opportunity to be involved with the fifth movie (Order of the Pheonix) has already passed, because it has been the most supernatural, dark, magical and imaginative story of the first six, and I think he could have had a field day with that installment. Then again, we're not yet sure what the seventh (and final) holds for us!

I think Shyamalan would be a great choice in that the way he unfolds the mysteries is similar to Rowling's technique. I am a fan of films 1-3 (not as much 4), but I think a Shyamalan version would be great!

I don't think M. Night is nearly as brilliant as he seems to think he is, but he certainly couldn't do worse than Chris Colombus did with the first two "Potter" movies. Gilliam would be an interesting choice; in fact, if he could deliver a high-grossing mainstream movie, it might free him up to doing that dream project of his with J. Depp.

Maybe Sham-alan could work in a twist where it turns out Harry Potter was an alien's ghost all along.

All of Shyamalan's movies revolve around a twist in everyday life. We'll get used to unusual situations for characters, then we'll get thrown a curveball. The stories themselves, for the most part, seem to make perfect sense. Bruce Willis was a working stiff who never quite lived up to his potential, and a doctor who got too involved in work. Both of these ideas are very, very realistic. The curve, though has never, once, been what I thought it would. That creativity is really what I love most about his movies. Now, putting that spin on a world that's already so fantastical and so far out, it seems like it would be too much. Terry Gilliam probably would be better suited. Maybe even David Cronenberg. Both have a visual sense that is completely their own. They could both put a spin on the movie that would make it stand out, while being perfectly at home in a world full of flying cars and killer trees.

Personally, I love Shyamalan's slow, weaving style, and would welcome the "change" to the series, as I felt the last movie was far too rushed, skipping over delightful details (i.e. story!!!) found in the books in favor of large FX actions CG sequences that make audiences go "oohhh..." I hope that with Shyamalan's skill, he would be able to create a more balanced narrative that gets the audience more emotionally invested in the characters better than number 5 did, while still maintaing that visual mastery and sense of wonder continuously found in the series.

AHH no keep M. Night out of Harry Potter. I love the Potter storyline too much to get it ruined by ghost alien mermaids. Shyamalan will put too much of his signature creepy eerie stupidness in a Harry Potter movie. It's supposed to be about Harry, not about M. Night.

I dunno about Shyamalan. His stuff that he writes and directs is ok. This would be the first time he directed something he didn't write. He does have a compelling visual style, but he's ok as a director/writer.
Gilliam would be really an interesting addition. He does have that surreal/absurd/dark style with some of his stuff that would fit in perfectly with the Potter story.

Shyamalan is capable of do nothing other than completely ruining a Potter film.

M.Night needs to stay away from Harry Potter. And to the person that dissed Christopher Colombus, he helped pick an awesome cast. He helped pick Richard Harris(may he rest in peace) didn't he? The first 2 Harry Potter's were the best and they only got worse as they went on. Like where is Dobby? The ghosts? Or Draco Malfor for that matter? A lot of things are being left out since they are getting new directors every movie they need to pick one and stay with it. By the way, the kid actors loved Christopher Colombus, and that is what matters most, is that the kids are comfortable on set.

Please don't add M. Night to the Harry Potter director's list. He is far to egotistical. It won't be about Harry Potter and the mysteries anymore. It will be M Night and his pompous chamber of self-important secrets. Ick!!!!!

Keep in mind, folks, that M. Night also directed a Stuart Little film as well. Plus, even M. Night is smart enough to know to treat a Action/Adventure film differently than a Suspense/Drama thriller.
If "Lady in the Water" doesn't do well, a Potter film may very well help give M. Night his "street creed" (or however you spell that) back, especially for those who felt burned by "The Village."
I think M. Night would do just fine, especially with the magical elements. It's like asking "We've got a weird, wonky script here that's imaginative to the point of being over-the-top... Would Tim Burton be a good director?" Yeah, he would be.

i think its a fantastic idea...i personally would love to see Shyamalan's take on a Potter movie. he's an ideas man and a good director i think. his movies tend to be anti-climatic but he tells great stories and you feel for each character he makes. i want to see Shyamalan make Potter a character driven movie which i think the other Potter movies lack.

M. Night Charlatan makes movies with 30 minutes worth of plot that inexplicably take about 2 and a half hours to unfold. The scariest thing about his films is how they have managed to pull the wool over the eyes of people who really should know better.
I'm no particular fan of the Potter franchise, except for PRISONER OF AZKABAN. I lost all interest in the rest of the films when I found that Cuaron would not be directing any more of them.

Er... didn't Rob Minkoff direct the Stuart Little film. Shyamalan wrote a draft of the script, sure... but he certainly didn't direct it.
Re: Potter, I say let him do it. And let him rewrite as necessary.

m.night would stick to the story. all of the movies he's written had a twist at the end, that does not mean a movie that already had a story with predetermined sequel material would get a twist. his dark style would perfectly fit the potter universe, and he in fact would pay more attention to ambiance and details having to do with the background supernatural element. i would love to see him direct one of the final 2.

I think M. Night would be great. But,,as for my kids go.They are Big Potter fans. And would not be happy with the change.
They like to watch "M. Night" his movies. They just don't think it would be a good idea for him to direct Potter movies.

All the complaints about Shymalan have to do with his stupid stories. And I'm certainly no fan of his silly, overwrought screenplays.
But the guy is an adept director, I say let him have the shot. Just keep don't let him near the script. I'd like to see what he did with a story he doesn't write. I think it could very well be good with his moody visuals and such.

So, which role is Shyamalan going to put himself into again? Honestly, I agree with the person who said that he's too full of himself to do the Potter story justice. Where's Spielberg when you need him!

Ugh! Please spare us. For one thing, I think an English director has a better grasp on the culture, as brilliantly displayed by Mike Newell. For another, Night is too damned pretentious. Moreover, M. Night is all form and no substance and has no ear for humor. And finally, his ego is too damned big to tolerate the primacy of the author or panoply of stars.
