Gore Verbinski Noncommittal on Further Pirate Flicks

Johnny Depp has openly stated his desire for as many more Pirates of the Caribbean flicks as he can land. He loves being captain Jack Sparrow, and said he will be extremely depressed when the time comes to leave the character behind. Judging from the opening weekend of Dead Man's Chest, the general movie-going public agrees with Depp, as they made his film the first true blockbuster of the summer. Perhaps by the time the third flick ends we'll find ourselves with a case of Pirate fatigue, but that looks to be rather unlikely. However, director Gore Verbinski isn't so sure he agrees with Depp on the value of more films. You can read his full comments here; what it basically boils down to is simply that Verbinski is pretty pleased with what he's got right now, and he's not sure he wants to add anything more to it. An understandable conviction, after spending so much time with the story already and producing a very successful package. Depp does have a tremendous amount of "star power," and his voice (coupled with the lure of money) could no doubt be a powerful persuasive element on studio execs. It is entirely possible that should he desire, he could bring about more films under a different helmer. Would he do it? Probably not. I don't know how the franchise would fare with a change in directors at this point anyway. After three films, the style is rather firmly established.

I think we need to wait until the third comes out to really see what Verbinski has to say. They haven't even filmed the third yet. At this point, he's probably tired of the movie. But, that might not be what he is saying this time next year.

I saw the 2nd one today. It was pretty poor, i have to say. Woefully paced, overlong, and lacking some funnies.
But hey, if they want to make more without Gore Verbinski, i say go for it. Just keep your eye on the clock when editing them.

The movie was very disappointing. Not funny and smart like the last one, and too high on the "gross" factor. (Captives held in a cage made of the human bones of their shipmates? Ick.) Not at all what it was cracked up to be, and definitely not for children. Won't bother with opening night of the next one. Might even skip it completely, if it is no better than Dead Man's Chest. Cryin' shame.

They could change directors and it wouldn't matter. Anyone could have made Pirates.
Verbinski doesn't have that distinct directing style that others like Woody Allen, Stanley Kubrick, Martin Scorsese have. When you watch a film it has a style that let's you know they directed it, and no one else could have made the movie.
The movie is hit because of its star, Depp, not the director.

Darien - they are not quite finished with the third yet. It was planned to be a back to back shoot, but due to hurricanes, etc., only the scenes in the carribbean have been shot. The rest is being shot, I believe, as we are speaking. In any case, Verbinski would still be doing post-production right now, and would not yet have had time for a break from Pirates. I think there is a possibility, with enough money behind it, that he would be able to be convinced.
However, I agree that the director could easily be changed.
