Halo Casting Rumor
Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Casting, RumorMonger, Fandom, Comic/Superhero/Geek
Not too very long ago, the AP reported on a meeting between the all-powerful Peter Jackson (this generation's George Lucas, in some regards) and highly-talented actor Denzel Washington. At the time, it was thought they were discussing a deal which would result in Washington directing a Jackson produced flick. That may well still be the case, but a new rumor is floating around out there, as reported by IGN Filmforce. Unspecified and unsubstantiated talk is floating about which suggests Denzel Washington may land the lead role of Master Chief in Jackson's upcoming Halo project, based on the popular video game title. I'm a big fan of Washington. The man's got a great voice, and as vocal talent is particularly important to a character who spends most of his existence under a helmet, I imagine it'd be a good match. He certainly is not the first (or probably even 20th) name which would have sprang to my mind, but I'm not the guy in charge of casting. Personally, I see no reason to not cast voice actor Steve Downes in the role. He could at least do the voice work, James Earl Jones as Darth Vader style. He is the worldwide recognized voice of Master Chief at this point, isn't he?

if by "this generation's george lucas" you mean he's going to release "the hobbit" in 20 years and it's going to suck, then you just made me sad.
as for halo, denzel seems fine to me, he's a great actor, and i think he'd really explore a role where he had to act without facial expressions. i haven't really played the games (i hate fps') but i do look forward to the movie. seeing the ring planet on the big screen will be a treat.

I don't like it.
For one, I think it's a waste of Denzel, and I think they'd end up feeling pressured to show him out of the suit because he's Denzel.
For another, I think Denzel has too distinctive and "current" of a way of speaking. He'd sound out of place in 2145 or whatever year Halo takes place. You need someone without a hint of an accent.

How do we know how people in 2145 will speak?
no one in biblical days had a clue we'd sound like at the turn of the 20th century, and those people couldn't have imagined what we would sound like at the turn of this century..so the point is moot
The movies made in the 50's, 60's and 70's about the biblical days (moses, ben-hur etc) had everyone speaking perfectly annunciated proper english..even if they were Egyption..
In the movie A.I. they spoke exactly as we do now, in fact the only movie I can recall where they tried to "futurize" the script was Back to the future 2, starship troopers and maybe the 5th element and we seen how well those went over...
So, I like Denzel, and I also dont have a problem with him taking his helmet off, it stands to reasons if the video game characters were real, at some point they would have to shower and maybe take a dump, why wouldn't their helmet come off too?
to say they shouldn't do that because you dont see them remove the helmet in the game is being alittle too picky...

No offense do Denzel but I think they should stick with the guy that did the voice of the master chief originally. I know that im not the only person that feels this way too, many of my friends are gamers and they dont even agree with the movie being live action. But anyway, i think they should keep the the original guys voice.

rofl no, john, you obviously arent a halo fan. You would have had to play halo 1 or 2 to understand. People talk in the game and you know what they all sound like. Thats how he knows what they would sound like in 2145

USA Today had an article a few weeks ago about Denzel recruiting WETA to do effects for a movie he is directing. So I'm guessing that debunks this rumour.

why cant we just use the actors from the game for voice?
James Earl Jones would work better as the Arbiter and not the Master Chief in my opinion

I know quite alot about Halo. I have read the books and i have played and beat both Halo's more times then i can count (what gammer hasen't) and Master Chief is his rank His real namre is John and he is an African American. I belive Denzel Washington Is a very good actor but i belive Steve Downes (voice actor from the games) should voice him, unless they plan to take off the helmet that may complicate things because he is caucasian. I also agree with Scott, James Earl Jones would make a excelent Arbiter but not a very good master cheif.

yeah...Master Chief/John/Spartan 117 or w/e you want to call him is a pale white kid, and in the screenplay--parts of which have already been disclosed--he is described as being nearly albino. (Additionally, the book says that he has brown hair, freckles, and a space between his teeth, but I'm seriously starting to sound like a geek so I'll just stop with all that).
Another thing...honestly, the best thing to do would to be to just get some insanely tall/big athletic stunt man to play the body and then use the voice actor from the game or w/e.
Would't mind seeing the following actors in it:
Bruce Willis or Clint Eastwood as Keyes
Samuel L Jackson as Johnson
Jessica Biel as Keyes's daughter
I dunno who should be Cortana....part of me wants Angelina Jolie, part of me wants whoevre plaed Trinity in the Matrix, or maybe even Jodie Foster, I dunno. Anyhow, I literally just thought of those actors off of the top of my head...if I thought harder, i could probably think of better ppl, but im tired.

I Dont think Denzel would be good, plus they dont even mention what race he is so who cares, but i personaly think they should have the same guy who did the voice on the game be the actor, and if it is denzel they better not let his voice be in it its too wussyish for mastercheif. Besides showing his face would ruin it.
