The Prestige Trailer: Oh. My. God.

Holy. Crap. It's official: I'm in full freak-out mode about The Prestige. Before, I was just hopeful, and excited about the prospect of a weird, complex, fascinating book being turned into a movie by Christopher Nolan, with a cast made up of folks like Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale and Michael Caine. Now that I've seen the trailer, however, I'm afraid I'm not going to have a moment of peace from my anticipation until the movie opens this fall -- it looks that good. For those of you who read and loved Christopher Priest's novel, the trailer is a revelation (at least it was for me): I have chill on top of my chills right now, from the simple thrill of seeing the novel brought to life so vividly and effectively. Putting some of the book's diary musings into Cutter's (Caine's) mouth seems to work surprisingly well, and Jackman and Bale look fantastic. Plus: Bowie! Tesla's light bulbs! And was that Ricky Jay?! I mean, seriously. This could only be better if it came with chocolate cake.
The Prestige opens October 27.

I had the same reaction you did. I was very curious to see how they were going to handle the narrative, so to see some of the stories the diaries tell (such as the shuffling old man with the bowl) is a huge, huge relief. It looks phenomenal.
The Prestige and The Fountain. Best studio films of the year. Calling it now.

The only screening which I liked, after reading the book was "Lord of the Rings". Also I like "Code Da Vinci", but I didn't read the book. I hope this screening will be great. We'll wait till release

So bummed as this appears to veer wildly from the book in some fundamental ways. The trailer shows the characters as friends and calls them that. In the book they were enemies from the start. I hope they don't change that to create false tragedy - "friendship gone awry" crap.

bgdc, I agree that the friendship thing is weird. The rest of it is so promising, though, that I'm willing to overlook that for the moment. If they want to create a false tragedy structure on which to hang an otherwise faithful adaptation, I'll let it slide. And yes, I'm a sucker.

one thing you notice though: johannson only says one line in that british accent, which is bothering me a bit because she may not come across totally believable in the movie...but other than that, yeah, its seriously awesome...

What brought my attention to the Priest novel in the first place was Tesla. His showmanship was akin to that of a magic act. Suspension of disbelief is attained more easily if there is a link somehow to the real world. Priest did this quite effectively by employing the character Tesla and linking the story to real events in Tesla's life, such his time at the Colorado Springs laboratory. This is where Tesla carried out his experiments in the wireless transmission of energy. If anyone could work real magic, it was Tesla.

Any film that showcases the genius of Nikola Tesla is a winner by me.
