Bruce Willis Wants Moonlighting: The Movie
Filed under: Comedy, Remakes and Sequels
One of my favorite TV-shows in the '80s was Moonlighting, a comic drama about a detective agency, which starred Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd. My favorite episode, because I'm a hardcore junkie for new versions of Shakespeare, is the one based on Taming of the Shrew, but otherwise I also had a ball following private eyes David and Maddie, a pair who beautifully evoked the screwball comedies of the '30s, as they solved quirky cases and got on each other's last nerves. Even more than the Sam and Diane relationship on Cheers, the David and Maddie partnership defined sexual tension, and of course like many other shows, Moonlighting eventually "jumped the shark" when the characters finally did it.
Now, after nearly twenty years, Willis is very interested in updating the show for the big screen. And I am right there with him on the idea. The actor is apparently only able to play two roles, and we're all about tired of John McClane, so the time is ripe to resurrect David Addison. Hopefully the two of us aren't the only ones who think so. Of course the movie could only work if Shepherd is interested, and it would also be a shame if they can't get Allyce Beasley and Curtis Armstrong on board, as well. And one more thing: No way can David and Maddie do it again.

A reunion would be great only if it is Bruce and Cybil. I think what killed the show was not one episode in particular, but the fact that Maddie's character always went back to being a bitch. Glen Gordon Caron has said numerous times that his inspiration for creating the show was a rendition of "Taming of the Shrew" he saw in central park. And Atomic Shakespeare was great, but the problem was that in the Moonlighting storyline, David is never able to "tame" Maddie. He is so good to her and we think the ice princess has melted but she never really does and by season 5 the writers have her choosing to be all alone. What crap. In the reunion they should be married, living in her cool mansion and be HAPPY dammit. That's all the audience really wanted, to see them together. There did not need to be constant friction to keep the chemistry.

I'm with you...it would never work with anyone but Bruce. I'm not sure Cybill is the only Maddie. But, it has to be someone long and lanky to lure a guy like David. Or a smart and spicy gal like Sandra Bullock...

Dear Mr. Campbell,
I am the Moonlighting Reunion Campaign founder, and what is happening now is a major result of almost five years of dedication. I started the online fan campaign to gather support from Moonlighting fans little did I know it would turn out to be so much more. My campaign staff conducted over 25 interviews from the cast and crew of Moonlighting such: Glenn Caron (creator), Cybill Shepherd, Allyce, Beasely, Curtis Armstrong, Jay Daniel (Co Exec. Prod),
and tons of writers, editors, directors, and more.
We posted all of these exclusive interviews in the "Moonlighting Stranger Fanzine"; which was developed and produced by my campaign partner Christie Taylor.
We were extremely instrumental in the release of Moonlighting on DVD. Like Miami Vice, Moonlighting was being held up by music rights. We met with Buena Vista and Lions Gate and convinced them to take the chance of releasing the series on DVD. Now season 4 is being released on DVD Sept 12 2006.
Cybill and Bruce finally reunited for the season 3 DVD for the featurette "Moonlighting Memories", and an episode commentary. My campaign staff and I are really thrilled that finally all of our hard work and dedication may finally be something we can sit in a theather and watch, Bruce and Cybill on the big screen.
Sincerely,
Joy Chodan

This makes my day. With hollywood making more remakes than original movies, the timing must be right for this. Hopefully they can get writers who can capture the to-ing and fro-ing conversation of the original series. I have to admit that if they do announce that they are doing this, I will shamelessly giggle like a little girl for at least a month!

Oh Man.........here we go again........It's been almost 20 years since the series ended and both actors have aged and put on some pounds. So has the show's fans. Cybill still has wit, fire and finesse, which made the Maddie character so lovable. I would like the movie to pick up on David and Maddie years later, and hope that the producers and writers realize that and play the movie's storyline that way also. It would be a waste of time and money making the film without her, and using Sandra Bullock (although a good actress in her own right)or any other actress as a replacement just is a no-brainer....

I never thought I would see this day. A reunion in 2007 would be the perfect way to celebrate the anniversary of I Am Curious Maddie. It may have taken 20 years, but this time let's end it the right way. Glenn, Bruce, Cybill, Allyce, Curtis, Jay Daniel and all those who made us laugh and cry - please do it one more time. Glenn needs to write the final chapter of his story (with a happy ending).

Chris,
Could you possibly reveal your source for this information? Where and when did the interview occur when Mr. Willis allegedly said this?
Thank you.

Diane, My source is at the bottom of my post in the "Read" link.
I will admit that the source is not always the most reliable and it never mentions where the quotes are from (they seem to pull them from interviews in print and online, I've noticed).
I've also since discovered stories on ContactMusic.com, which often reprints pieces from PR-Inside.com, in which Bruce Willis says he doesn't want a Moonlighting movie, he does want one but won't play David, and one in which Shepherd claims she and Willis are interested if Caron is involved.
So, I may not think the story has 100% validity, but I at least wanted to express my favoring the decision to make a movie.

I would definatly be there at the opening in front row. This would be absolutly great if Bruce and Cybill go together for one more show. I think Glenn needs to write the last chapter also and i think it will be awsome and very intresting. MY 2 Cents worth lol. Hope this happens!!!!!!

Personally, I think Bruce Willis' quote is being taken out of context. At no point during the direct quotes being used within this story does Bruce say, "I want to do a Moonlighting movie." Somebody is taking a quote by Bruce speaking "positively" about ML and spinning it into it leading to a ML movie.
Until I hear a soundbite from Bruce Willis on "Entertainment Tonight" or "CNN", I'm putting NO STOCK into this report.
Somebody needs to stop clipping and pasting and start sourcing this story out. There are people who've commented on this page today who have connections to ML writers/producers, etc.. I strongly suggest those individuals start sourcing this out and get a confirmation, a no-comment or a denial.

It wouldn't be Moonlighting without Bruce and Cybill, together again, as evidenced by the decline of the show in the 4th season, when the characters were seperated by half a continent. It certainly was not the fact that David and Maddie "did it" that sent Moonlighting into a downward spiral, but the way the storyline was treated after they did. C'mon -- how can you be a fan and not want Maddie and Dave together?

Bruce and Cybill together again - A dream come true. OK so they will be 20 years older but surely by now all the kinks and quirks will be ironed out and we shall get the Happy Ending we were cheated of the first time.

Does anybody out there know if there was another movie about Amigos other than the Three Amigos? Also did Bruce Willis star in a movie about 16 Blocks, and is there another movie he starred in with a digit? Please answer immediately? I have to answer a question before 8:00 p.m. tonight. Did Adam Sandler star in a funny movie other than 50 Dates, a movie with numbers? Thanks.
