Is Someone Kidding -- Or Is Heath Ledger the New Joker?
Filed under: Casting, RumorMonger, Fandom, DIY/Filmmaking, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels, Games and Game Movies
After spending several months dissecting each and every single rumor surrounding the role of The Joker in Christopher Nolan's Untitled Batman Begins sequel, it appears as if we may finally have our villain. According to those pesky folks over at Latino Review, they're confirming (through "a very trusted source") that actor Heath Ledger was officially offered the role of Joker last night. "Holy gigantic Brokeback mistake Batman!" said writer Erik Davis as he broke the news to Cinematical readers everywhere.
Yes, Heath Ledger. Not Paul Bettany. Not Robin Williams. Not Michael Keaton. Not Jude Law. Not Johnny Depp. Not Hugo Weaving. Not Lachy Hulme. And not Mark Beall. (That's right, Mark has written so much about this damn role, I'm even throwing his name into the mix.) Now, we're not positive this is true, though Latino Review is usually spot on when it comes to their sources. However, just because Ledger was offered the role, does not at all mean he's going to take it. Personally, I'm not crazy about the choice, then again I trust Nolan sees something in Heath that, perhaps, I do not. What do you think?

Eh....sure hope not. Not a terrible actor....I just don't see him as the Joker. I think Paul Bettany would be the best choice, but I know Molan hasn't approached Bettany yet for the role. Bettany said he would do it if he was offered.

What the efff?
Katie Holmes was bad enough but I could live with it due to the rest of the cast. This idea is plain daft, and I'd say that even if I wasn't so gung-ho over Christopher Eccleston for the role.
What next? Sandra Bernhard for Talia Al Ghul?
Oh well, at least Ledger can act. I guess its not a Kryptonian sized casting error unlike things committed on another Warner Bros. property.

I wouldn't have thought of him, but I think he could do it. He's a decent actor and definitely capable of showing a mean streak. Maybe we'll get a slightly more physical Joker, which would be fine with me. One that would actually pose a threat to Batman beyond just being insane.

I would love to see Paul Bettany pull it off, but Ledger has talent. I still remember his 5 minutes from Monster's Ball as the standout performance of that film. I trust Christopher Nolan, so I'm sure he'll show us a good time.

...more so than Crispin Glover, which many morons have suggested for the role...
I still say Eccleston is the best choice.

Clearly you've never seen Ledger in Lords of Dogtown. The boy can act.

If he could pull it off well, he'd be showing good range. He could return from brooding to his Knight's Tale and 10 Things dashing territory. He could be a handsome and charmin, and psychotic, Joker.
Weren't they considering Jake Gyllenhaal for one of the other roles? That would be quite an amusing Brokeback reunion. Ah, imagine the subtext!

Yeah - about as convincing as his performance in Brokeback. Take that shit our of your mouth so we can undertand what the hell you're saying. No thanks! He's the wrong choice.

Heath Ledger? That's gross. If that guy was such a wooden actor in the Star Wars movies, why would he be any better as The Joker?
Eccleston gets my vote. The man is an acting tour de force and his quirky, brazen features would be perfect in the makeup. Give this role to somebody who has grit.

Heath didn't appear in one Star Wars movie! I'm totally convinced that this guy will play The Joker perfectly! Huge talent, that man!

I sure hope this isn't true. I too was looking forward to Christopher Eccleston in this. (Unless, of course, Eccleston turned it down and has something even better in the works? Or they couldn't come to terms -- and if that's the case, shame on the production for not offering him a great deal!)

UGH. This is horrible. Almost as horrible as the fact that Bettany-- the actor who should definitely be playing the Joker-- is in final negotiations to do a movie with Nicole Kidman based on teencrap fantasy fiction, which I will be forced to watch because I adore him so. Even if Ledger turns it down, Bettany may not be available.
Crispin Glover seems a natural choice, as well. Ledger is too physically substantial, even if he loses weight. Joker is a tall, skinny, angular guy. Bah.

Ledger is an excellent choice! He was phenominal in A Knight's Tale, and very good in The Patriot. Remember when whiners complained Michael Keaton would ruin Batman? It was awesome, even if Jack Nicholson stole the show as The Joker. If Jack hadn't played the Joker part it would still have been great. Paul Bettany would also be great as The Joker so it wouldn't matter if either got the part. Robin Williams is too old for that role. Keaton would be a good choice just because, and MAYZEE is obviously stoned. Just Kidding Mayzee

Heath Ledger would make an interesting joker.... (and not Hayden from Star Wars, let's make that clear), but I reaaaaaaally wanted Paul Bettany for the role. Dangit.

Holy questionable casting Batman! Heath Ledger? I was hoping for Lachy Hulme/ Paul Bettany/ Crispin Glover also, but I will reserve judgment until June '08. Chris Nolan did an excellent job of reviving the moribund (understatement) franchise, so I am inclined to trust his judgment on this.
But still. Heath Ledger? I dunno. :-/
