Michelle Pfeiffer, Dancing Queen? Mamma Mia!
Filed under: Drama, Music & Musicals, Romance, Casting, RumorMonger, Newsstand
Now that Michelle Pfeiffer remembered she can sing and dance and, as a result, took the Hairspray gig, she may be poised to become a real, live dancing queen. According to reports in the British press, Pfeiffer is one of a handful of names being seriously considered to play Donna, a single mother who is reacquainted with a trio of exes when her daughter invites them her a wedding, in the screen version of the ABBA musical, Mamma Mia!. The film is still in the very early stages: Catherine Johnson, who wrote the script for the musical, is currently at work on the screenplay with producer Judy Craymer, and it's thought that stage director Phyllida Lloyd may ultimately helm the movie. Other names allegedly in the mix to play Donna are Kim Basinger (?!), Nicole Kidman and Meryl Streep; production begins next summer.

Pfeifer would be a lot better for that role than any of the others mentioned.
I don't see how this will work though. On stage, it's a campy, fun, jukebox family show. In movie form, you're going to watch a bunch of people on screen acting out a story set to the music of ABBA? I'll have to see it to believe it.
This little age of movie musicals is very tricky. Chicago worked because of its witty premise, timeless jazz score, and star vehicle quality. Nothing else since has had the same success. However, I LOVE musicals, so let the movies keep on comin'.

Don't you dare put Meryl Streep in this movie. Not only is she one of those damm Hollywood liberals, she's also too old to play the part of Donna.
Please don't put any liberals in this movie. If she's in this movie,I will definitly not go see it.

The most logical choice for this is role is Olivia Newton-John. As the stage play is mostly musical and requires a singer who can act not an actor who can sing. Mandy Moore would be perfect for the role of the daughter.
Tom Hanks (the producer) would be foolish to hire anyone else for the role.

Meryl Streep is too good an actress to be in this movie. I say let Pfeiffer have the role. *shrugs*
And wow, Mike, you're an idiot.

I guess you won't see the movie at all, Mike because if Michelle Pfeiffer ends up playing the part, there WILL be a Liberal in the movie. :)

Olivia Newton John would be the best person to play this part. She is the most talented when it comes to musicals.

A big name for the lead may be what the doctor orders for Publicity but when it comes to Sophie, there is only one choice. Kristie Marsden. She played the role of Sophie during the 2nd U.S. tour and I was fortunate to see her performance at the Broward Center For Performing Arts. I loved the show so much I saw the next 3 shows that came to the area, each time with a different person playing the role of Sophie. Mandy Moore is a great choice but Kristie Marsden is "Sophie"

Olivia would work, but technically, Olivia is a belting soprano (like Agnetha Fältskog from ABBA was). Many of the Mammma Mia songs (the ones for Donna, anyway) have been typically performed by mezzo sopranos. Well, that's how the Donnas have been cast. Possibly in the range of a mezzo soprano like.....okay, I'll say it. Meryl Streep or Madonna.

I'm not sure how Mamma Mia! will work as a film. The show is great, and I don't think a film will be up to it.
Instead of getting well-known actors, I think the original London Cast should star...It would be so much better
