News from Slackerwood: Ways to Cool Off
Filed under: Free Movies, News From Slackerwood

It's the time of year when an overly air-conditioned theater sounds absolutely wonderful, even if the movie itself is mediocre. I'm not sure I'd want to see movies outside this week, even after dark, except for the ones at Deep Eddy Pool. However, an outdoor nighttime movie would then be a good excuse for lots of frosty beverages and maybe ice cream. If you're really lucky, you were able to score tickets to the sold-out Rolling Roadshow preview of The Descent this weekend at the cool Longhorn Caverns. If not, check out the other special screenings this week in Austin.
- Deep Eddy Pool is showing movies you can watch from the comfort of the refreshingly cool water. On Saturday night, you can see Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit if you pay the usual pool admission.
- The Paramount's Summer Movie Series continues with another week of comedies: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum on Sunday, a Blake Edwards double-feature of The Party and The Pink Panther on Sunday and Monday, a delightful George Cukor double-bill of The Women and Adam's Rib on Tuesday and Wednesday, and a Billy Wilder/Marilyn Monroe set of Some Like It Hot and The Seven-Year Itch on Thursday and Friday.
- Chill with the ice-bound March of the Penguins ... for free. Westgate Theater is showing the documentary on Tuesday through Thursday at 10 am as part of its Free Family Film series. Or if that's too icy for you, Round Rock Theater is showing Madagascar for $1 as part of its Summer Movie Clubhouse at 9:30 am, also Tuesday through Thursday.
- Alamo Downtown is showing Harold and Maude on Tuesday and Wednesday night, for no apparent reason other than that it's such an enjoyable movie.
- The Austin Film Society series "De:Re/Constructing the Narrative" concludes on Tuesday night at Alamo Downtown with Irreversible, a 2002 French film starring Monica Bellucci and Vincent Cassel.
- See the Eric Rohmer film Summer on Wednesday night at Alamo Downtown as part of Austin Film Society's monthly 20th anniversary screening series.
- There's nothing like sitting outside on a warm summer night, enjoying the breezes (if Austin ever gets any summer breezes), and watching ... zombies. On Wednesday night, you can catch Shaun of the Dead outdoors at Central Market. Admission is free.
- San Antonio Cafe at Texas Hillel is showing a Marx Brothers double-feature on Wednesday night: The Big Store and A Night in Casablanca. Admission is free and so are "non-alcoholic Casablanca cocktails."
- The Austin Gay and Lesbian Film Festival (aGLIFF) is reprising its festival showing of the documentary Made in Secret on Thursday night at Alamo Downtown.
- On the Waterfront is playing outdoors on Thursday night ... not out on a waterfront, but at The Glenn near The Backyard. Admission is free, but bring or rent a blanket because lawn chairs aren't allowed at The Glenn.
- Heads up -- next weekend is going to be Raiders-centric at Alamo Downtown. The original Raiders of the Lost Ark will play at midnight on Friday and Saturday. But the earlier screenings on those nights are devoted to Raiders: The Adaptation, a shot-by-shot homage to the film done by a group of Mississippi kids over a space of eight years. Some of those kids (now grown up) will be present at the screenings.
