Let's All Take a Trip to The Woods (FINALLY!)

You think I talk about The Descent a lot? You should have seen me a few years ago when May finally showed up on DVD after I'd been gushing over the thing for forever and a week. (Seriously, no messing around: If you haven't at least rented May yet, please click right here and then come on back. I'll wait.)So the reason I brought up May is this: It was directed by a guy called Lucky McKee, and his second film (The Woods) has been sitting on a shelf in a Sony broom closet for about 18 months. It recently played a few film festivals (to enthusiastic response), but the studio doesn't seem willing to spend any money on the flick. So now you can plan to buy/rent the DVD on October 3rd. And yes, you read it right: The Woods stars not only Agnes Bruckner and Patricia Clarkson... but Bruce Campbell, too.
What boils my proverbial potatoes is this: Sony can release a pathetically wretched remake of The Fog on 3,000 screens, yet something like The Woods gets jammed in a drawer, forgotten and then shuffled off to Blockbuster to collect dust. This is why the horror genre gets no respect. (Rant over.) Ah well, May didn't play the 'plexes either, and that flick's a freakin' masterpiece.

It's almost like the studios don't have a concept of how a business works. They spend $X making a movie. The movie is done, made, finished. A movie like The Woods doesn't cost a lot to make. That means it doesn't need to make $300million to make a profit. And that's really the goal of studios, right? To make a profit?
So, instead of throwing a couple extra million behind marketing a finished film they just dump it to DVD, meanwhile they invest in crap like The Fog and other such crap. The Fog made about $29mil domestically at the box office. Production cost was $18mil. Who knows how much marketing was. Not a horrible profit.
I think the rumor on The Woods was $12mil production. Think they could turn that out at the box office? I certainly think they could with the marketing they threw as something like The Fog. If it made $20 it would be a similar "success" as The Fog.

This is suprising, especially considering Lucky mcKee's Masters of Horror Episode (which should be at my house right now from Netflix), apparenlty is one of the most talked about ones. Perhaps that's why this is coming out on DVD, finally.
