Monday Morning Poll: The Best and Worst Bond Songs
Filed under: Action, Fandom, DIY/Filmmaking, James Bond, Remakes and Sequels, Seven Days of 007
With the 21st James Bond film set to hit theaters this November, it's hard not to find yourself at least a little bit excited. Heck, we know Casino Royale producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson are stoked, seeing as they've already gone ahead and cemented a Bond 22, due out May 2008. We've debated whether or not Daniel Craig was a good choice for Bond. We've spent a tremendous amount of time, throwing out name after name, while producers searched for their Bond girl(s). Then came those first Casino Royale images. Sweet! They were followed by a teaser trailer. Double sweet! However, amidst all the hype and announcements, one crucial aspect of the film was missing: Its theme song.
Over the years, the James Bond theme song has grown in popularity, as producers continually search for just the right artists to lend their voices to the classic franchise. This past weekend, a Finnish newspaper revealed that Chris Cornell (Sound Garden, Audioslave) has written the theme song for Casino Royale, making him the first male artist to perform a Bond song since A-Ha gave us one for 1987's The Living Daylights. Being the big Audioslave fan that I am, this news sits very well with me. Will Cornell end the streak of crappy Bond songs put forth by artists like Madonna, Garbage and Sheryl Crow?
So, I ask you: In your opinion, which James Bond theme song is the best of all time (Duran Duran rocked!)? And which is the worst?

I've always been sort of obsessed with For Your Eyes Only (both the song and the movie). Gotta love that Sheena Easton.

Shirley Bassey's Goldfinger has to be the best. And Live and Let Die is up there.

Worst: Lulu's "Man With the Golden Gun." Yikes!
(And let's not forget the themes to the "unofficial" Bonds. Herb Alpert's "Casino Royale" theme is a catchy mess. But that "Never Say Never Again" tune? Ouch.)

Best: I'll have to vote for the neglected Moonraker, though FYIO is also excellent. (Bonus: Moonraker's end-title disco version!)
Worst: Man With The Golden Gun. An inept Goldfinger rewrite with clumsy sexual analogies.

Much as I love Madonna, that horrible piece of sh*! she did for Die Another Day (I think that was the name of the, um, SONG) had to be truly the worst!

Live & Let Die is easily my favourite, Duran Duran being my least.
And has Chris Cornell really written the Casino Royale theme? I thought it had been widely acknowledged to be written (at least, in part) by Tony Christie *shudder*.

Shirley Bassey's themes are my favorites. The all-time worst has to be Madonna's theme for Die Another Day, which is hardly a theme at all. Reportedly David Arnold complained that her "song" was almost impossible to integrate into his score for the film.
Interesting side note: Arnold's work on Tomorrow Never Dies played on the original theme "Surrender" by k.d.lang, which got scrapped in favor of Sheryl Crow's theme.

Just because the song is written by Chris Cornell doesn't mean he is performing it. Tina Turner performed the theme to GoldenEye, but the song itself was written by Bono and The Edge.

"Thunderball" by Tom Jones.
After the very last belt of "Like thun-derrr-BALLLLLLLLLLLL," the man passed-the-hell-out in the studio. No lie.
Not enough? How about the fact that Shirley Bassey recorded a version of the same song for the film. The studio went with Jones instead.

"Just because the song is written by Chris Cornell doesn't mean he is performing it."
The linked article claims that Cornell has said that he is both writting and performing it.

The absolute worst is the Madonna song from "Die Another Day".
The best is Louis Armstrong's "We Have All The Time In The World" from "On Her Majesty's Secret Service". It's Louis Freakin' Armstrong...no one else comes close.

I will also chime in with the worst being "Die Another Day"... though I do like like the music video (complete with blood smeared on the walls and random yoga poses).
Live & Let Die is the best!

I wasn't so keen on the Madonna song, until i saw it in the movie proper. I actually thought it worked quite well in the context of the movie.
However, i think that Die Another Day is by far the worst Bond film ever made. Hell, i'd say it's probably among the ten worst FILMS i've ever ssen.

Mmmm... I´m getting hate mail for this all the time, but I have to say this: When talking about Bond themes, my all time fave is "The World Is Not Enough" by Garbage.
I guess, it will be 'till my ears receive the Cornell song. I´m a big Cornell Fan, I consider him one of the greatest lyricist ever, I love his bands, and I love even more his solo work... "Euphoria Morning"...
And about the worst, Madonna... No doubt about it... Totally wasted. I like Madonna, but "Die Another Day" just doesn´t work.

I think the biggest faux pau was not using the K.D. Lang song for the titles of Tomorrow Never Dies. It is on the soundtrack and really encompasses the nostalgic feel of the old songs. Definitely check it out if you can.

Shirley Bassey's Goldfinger was, for me, the most iconic, though I also love Tom Jones' rendition of Thunderball. In the second tier is The Living Daylights and Live and Let Die, though I absolutely hate the latter's ungrammatical lyrics.

How come no one has mentioned The Spy Who Loved Me? That's my favorite.
My favorites:
1. The Spy Who Loved Me
2. Live and Let Die
3. A View To a Kill (shut up, duran haters)
The Madonna one was terrible, yes, but isn't that possibly because the movie was so bad?
