Nicolas Cage as Liberace?
Filed under: Gay & Lesbian, Music & Musicals, Casting
This could be the most bizarre casting idea I have ever heard: Nicolas Cage is said to be producing a Liberace biopic, in which he will star as the flamboyant pianist. Is it just that everyone wants to play gay these days or could this really be a dream of Cage's? After his hilarious retro cameo in Good Night, and Good Luck, Liberace is ripe for more spotlight, but Cage? Nicolas Cage as Liberace? I'm dumbfounded. There is no way that this movie could be taken seriously, right? Right. And it seems that Cage must not really be intending for it to be. Hired to write the screenplay are Aaron Seltzer and Jason Friedberg, the guys who gave us Date Movie, and who partially gave us Scary Movie. Since they're so good with titles, let me be the first to guess this one will be called Liberace Movie. Of course, there is just too much about Liberace that requires a serious portrayal of his life. Can Seltzer and Friedberg handle the AIDS aspect with respect? According to the report on this project, the writers are approaching the idea with more care than their other scripts, so it is possible. But I am hoping that they can find a happy medium and include a good amount of silliness, too. There is a very slight chance that a combination between camp and drama could work, though Cage is going to have a tough time finding that perfect director to make it happen.

I remember Victor Garbar (Alias/Titanic) staring in a TV movie of Liberace's life - mayber 15 or 20 years ago?? It was wonderful. I've never forgotten it. I didn't know anything really about him until seeing this film.
I believe Nick Cage would be excellent. He is so talented and can fullfill any role given to him.

Nicky Cage might be right for some roles but not this one. He is to wooden face and controlled for the part of Liberace. I'm afraid that the passion and love in Lib's face would be to much for Nicky. Also the fact that he really was a sweet man with so much love and passion, I'm not sure Nick would be up to that.

Liberace was a wonderful, talented and funny entertainer. His eccentricity and flamboyance will be hard to imitate. If anyone can make a believable starring role out of this movie, my vote would go to the VERY talented Nicholas Cage.

Nicolas Cage as Liberace? HUH?! Sheesh! Niclas Cage is not fit to be play as Liberace. Why? Because Niclas Cage is hetersexual, straight, and macho man. What else can I say more about himself as an actor? What is about other gay actors to be able to play a gay pianist in the movie about the biopic of Liberace? That gay character is not for Niclas Cage. Rolled my eyes up and down!

Nic Cage is sensitive and a tremendous actor he will not do the part if he can't do it right. Liberace was a kind and generous person with great talent and Cage is up to the challenge.

I was lucky enough to have known Liberace, and think that Nicholas Cage would be PERFECT for the role! There was nothing in Liberace's off-stage demeanor that would indicate that he was gay...most of the swish was part of the act. He was a consumate gentleman, a fabulous pianist and a marvelous entertainer. I can't think of anyone better to meld the various aspects of this complex life with more grace and dignity than Cage.

Personally, I think the Austrialan actor who was the lead in Wolverine would do a much better job then Nicholas. I also think he could get his voice tone and mannerism so much better too.....sorry, his name has eluded me right now...
