Tom Cruise is Iron Man ... Again?

That's right folks, the rumor rabbits are at it again. Even though director Jon Favreau has stated Tom Cruise is and will not be in the running for the lead role in Iron Man, word leaking out of Comic-Con suggests that might not be the case. According to Cinescape via one of their top secret Comic-Con scoopers, the news leaked out of Saturday's Marvel Panel. Mind you, not from anyone on the actual panel -- oh no, the scooper overheard the information from the three Paramount suits seated in front of him.
What did he hear? Well, as the panel was discussing Iron Man, one of the three suits said, "I believe Tom Cruise has got it in the bag." Interesting. What is this bag? Where did it come from? Is it brown? Green? Silver? And what exactly does Tom Cruise have in it? Perhaps the scooper, instead, heard a word that rhymed with 'bag'. Honestly, that would make a lot more sense. So, what's the deal here? Is Tom Cruise really back in the mix? It makes sense to include the star since Marvel is self-financing the flick. An unknown Iron Man could equal a box office disaster. However, throw Tom Cruise in there and you're guaranteed to bring home the bacon. I guess we shall wait and see ...

I don't think that Tom Cruise would be a good Iron Man. He's an okay actor but I can't picture him in the red and yellow suit. Plus, he stopped being hot when he went crazy.

He may be a douche in real life, but to be fair, he does actually resemble Tony Stark (recently, anyway) fairly well.

I hate Tom Cruise. I'm so sick of him. How come all of the characters are cocky douche bags?
I have no problem not giving Tom Cruise anymore of my hard earned money.

It's true, Tom would guarantee success. One more film over the 100 million mark domestically and he's got a string of 8 movies over that mark. No matter what he does, he succeeds. He's the man.

I think Tom Cruise would make a good Tony Stark, but I don't know if he is needed. Will his name make the movie that much more money to offset his asking price? How about for the sequels? And the possible Avengers movie?
For a character like this that you want to be making movies for years to come, I would think you would want someone young (but not too young) and relatively affordable.
Also, he is going to be in a suit for a fair chuck of the movie I assume, so mostly you are hiring a voice actor.

Yeah, keep him out of it. It's not that I think he'd be a bad Tony Stark, but he'd be an awful Iron Man.
Think Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man 2 - always taking off his mask so that he can "emote" (read: show his famous lug to the world). Tom Cruise would be that times a thousand.
To this end, someone on the internet should start a petition: the "Keep Iron Man's helmet on!" campaign.
And he's insane.

Stark needs to be cocky. Yes intelligent, and noble when he wants to, but cocky. Occasionally they have to have the sad, self hating drunk Stark, but you also need the nailing supermodels, enjoying being a billionaire Stark.
I think they can find an unknown that would be perfect. A young Tom Selleck with a little Colin Farrel swagger.

The dude from the Aviator, Adam Scott, would be great as Tony Stark. I think having a-list star brings too much baggage to a film. I enjoy Tom Cruise movies but he plays the same grinning character in every film - even Magnolia!

As I recall from the comics, when Iron Man is in trouble, they often will have a panel that show's Tony Stark's face from a POV inside the mask, all sweaty and stressed out... perhaps they will use this same trick to get mileage out of Tom's face without having the iron man suit keep getting trashed or taken off.
That said, I don't thnk Cruise is a good choice but I'm sure the job is his if he wants it.

I want to see Tom as an evil villain again, like in Interview with a vampire. Or see him in something that makes another political statement, like Born on the 4th of July, or The Constant Gardener.
Superhero? I don't like cocky, arrogant superheros anyway. The romantic ones are much more inspiring.

Cruise isn't a horrible idea. However, I pretty much agree with Chris here. When talk started years ago about an Iron Man movie, I always thought that Matthew McConaughey would be perfect for this role. And once I saw the movie "Sahara" he did last year, I was certain of it.

I guess it all depends on the demand for the movie. If the demand is huge, Tom Cruise is the right guy for the role. If the demand for Iron Man isn't that huge, it would probably be a good idea to go with someone unknown and less cost of investment.
I do think Cruise would make a good Iron Man because he is in excellent shape and is dedication to do the role without serious help from stunt men. I know Tom is dedicated to doing his own stunts which I think he did well in MI:III and another reason why I think directors love to work with him.
Though I would love to see him in Iron Man, I would like even more to see Cruise to do more character driven roles like what he did with Eyes Wide Shut or Vanillia Sky which I think is his best performance to date.

Sorry, Cruise is just too short to play Iron Man.
In the armor, he'd look like a can of soup.
