Kevin Smith is Pissed Off Again
After making virtual lunchmeat out of Joel Siegel and his crybaby ways, Clerks 2 director Kevin Smith now has a new target firmly in his sights. Namely, the L.A. Weekly's Nikki Finke. As Erik reported this morning, Ms. Finke takes extreme umbrage with the fact that WeinsteinCo. sponsored a Clerks 2 promotion that resulted in 10,000 Smith fans getting their names attached to the flick's end credits. As is his normal M.O., Mr. Smith fired back on his own blog -- and the guy's seriously unhappy about Ms. Finke's comments. What both sides fail to mention is that this is hardly a new trend. Peter Jackson used a similar approach a few years back, and you can see thousands of fans' names listed on the Fellowship of the Ring extended edition DVD. Right?
Nikki Finke calls it "a huge dis to anyone who's ever earned a legitimate credit on a film." Kevin Smith calls it a non-issue that nobody in the biz has complained about before now. Obviously it's just a difference of opinion, but Smith does nail Finke on one erroneous statement: She refers to Clerks 2 as a "failure," but the flick will certainly be well within the realm of profitability before the DVD hits the shelves.
And with all due respect to a fine writer, Ms. Finke might want to rent Airplane! and scan through those end credits to see how "sacred" the credit scrolls actually are.

5 million dollar movie and it's already made over $13 million. That's a good deal...Superman's backers wish they had that kind of ROI.

Dear Kevin Smith(part II),
Dude stop bitching man seriously. Who cares what people say. Didnt you go to High School? Im really sorry you would rather hear praise about your film than criticism. People have the right to say what they want just like you do.

People DO have the right to say what they want. And when they write bizarrely disjointed editorials filled with uninformed opinions, half-or-un-truths, and bizarre leaps in logic, he has the right to call them on it.
Seriously, follow some of his links about Nikki Finke. I think the woman is not right in the head.

I guess you DO learn something new every day. I'd never heard of Nikki Finke before, but now I know she's insane. Not sure if this information will ever prove useful, but you never know.

I just happen to be one of those fans that will be given the unbelievable honor of being listed in the Clerk 2 DVD credits and in my opinion Kevin Smith is just showing his gratitude to a few of his fans for being loyal to his work and for promoting his film by getting the word out about it. I think it is a great way for a film maker to show respect to his devoted fans. The credits are there for the film maker to give thanks to whomever they choose. And as for if his fan's have "earned" the right to be listed on the DVD credits ... well paying to see the movie and buying the DVD should be noted ... as it is clearly the amount of money the movie makes that decides if the movie is a success or not. I am truly grateful for having the honor of being added to a list of credits at the end of the movie that, as one of the devoted fans, I have helped make so successful and at least Kevin Smith recognizes that ... Thanks Kevin!
(And as a total after thought ... this Ms. Finke was a nobody to me before reading this article and now because of her demented "opinion" on what Kevin Smith chose to do to honor his devoted fans she now isn't even worthy of being a nobody in my book.)

Hey Mike Unger, I think it's funny that u say that Kevin shouldn't bitch, and yet you say people should say what they want. Yea Mike, thats not a contradicition. Wait, yes it is. And the man has the right to defend what he did for his fans. So have some respect for a truly brilliant man and his fans.
