The Departed Trailer!
Filed under: Drama, Trailer Trash, DIY/Filmmaking, Remakes and Sequels
Okay, I admit to being a pretty dorky Martin Scorsese fan. Part of it probably has to do with my New York roots and also, well, the guy is a great director. As you can imagine, The Departed is a film I've been anticipating ever since it was announced. Besides Scorsese, the cast looked amazing. I mean, how could you go wrong with Jack Nicholson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Martin Sheen, Alec Baldwin and Mark Wahlberg? You can't. It's impossible. Right?
Well, The Departed finally has a trailer online. As expected, it's long and filled with great music. Aside from that, well, I wasn't left dying for more. Pic, a remake of the popular Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs, tells of the battle between Massachusetts police and an Irish-American gang. Things get hairy when each plants an undercover mole deep inside the other's world. Will they cross paths? If so, what will happen? I'm not sure what exactly it was about the trailer I didn't like. Part of me thinks it's Leo. Or Damon? Then again, maybe my expectations were set too high. What do you think?

I thought it looked cool, Jack in particular. It looks like it might be a performance to rival his Joker or Al Pacino's Hanna in HEAT. Or it could just suck. I think it'll be a better movie than either of his most recent efforts. But I thought that about both of them, too, in their time, and was supremely let down. So now I just hope it's entertaining. He's never fallen off like Woody Allen--the technique is still there in GANGS and AVIATOR, it was that the screenplays were horrible cobble jobs--but he's taken a dip for a while now. I think KUNDUN is the last Great Movie he made and the Dylan doc was pretty sweet, too, I suppose.

Nice, Scorcese filled it up with well known actors so that people will be interested in seeing it. It looks interesting enough and I'll likely watch it because I enjoy Nicholson but nonetheless people should try and watch the original Infernal Affairs before seeing this as that was great.

It looks great to me. I watched the trailer twice. Like the music, like the accents and the dialogue. I think Leo and Matt look strong and well cast. You can't go wrong with Jack...he is always worth the price of admission. It looks tight! I'm on board.

I have never heard of this one, but based on that trailer I really want to see it now! The only things I didn't like about the trailer were the Pink Floyd song (was that a cover or just a horrible live version?) that seemed really out of place, and the requisite stinger line at the end ("We're all on our way out, let's act accordingly" or something like that. What the crap is that?)
Also, doesn't it sort of ruin things knowing that Damon is the mole for the Mob? Or is this known pretty up-front in the original?

In the original its known to the audience who is working for the mob/police, but it isnt know to the other characters.
For those interested in The Departed should really check out the original and its sequel which IMO is slightly better.

Let the Wicked Pissah Fake Accents begin! Leo's in particular seemed pretty horrific (I bet he's a Yankees fan too)
For inspiration, read The Brothers Bulger by Howie Carr (the real life story of Boston's irish crime overlord, Whitey Bulger, and his brother, the former president of the State Senate)

Is it just me or does it feel a lot like Phil Joanou's State of Grace? Same irish mobster, boston acccent, with deep undercover cop tone Except that movie had a much better cast with Sean Penn, Ed Harris, Gary Oldman, Robin Wright Penn, John Turturro, John C Reilly, and Burgess Meredith.
Check it out, its very underrated and underseen.
Oldman's performance is up there with Sid and Nancy.
