Batman Sequel Update: Phillippe is Two Face?
Filed under: Casting, RumorMonger, DIY/Filmmaking, Comic/Superhero/Geek
Now that the role of Joker is unofficially in the hands of Heath Ledger, rumors are heating up regarding the other major baddie in Christopher Nolan's Untitled Batman Begins Sequel. Harvey Dent, Gotham's young assistant D.A. ultimately transforms into one of Batman's greatest villains -- Two Face. Word is Dent will not become Two Face until the third film, making it so whoever signs up for the role must do so for at least two films.
So far, a ton of names have been mentioned: Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Josh Lucas and Jake Gyllenhaal, to name a few. Personally, I think it would be hilarious if Gyllenhaal nabbed the role -- Brokeback Batman, anyone? The latest name being circulated around the Bat-cave is that of Crash star and Mr. Reese Witherspoon, Ryan Phillippe. Ugh. Actually, make that a double ugh.
Yes, I'm one of those people who cannot stand Ryan Phillippe. Besides the fact he is as boring as they come, the guy just can't act. Once past those pretty-boy looks, it's all empty space. Ledger I can deal with, however, I draw the line with Phillippe. Please. I beg you. Don't do it.

I second Liev Schreiber. He is a great actor, and has the size for a menacing character like Two Face and the good looks and clean cut appeal of Harvey Dent.

I think Liev Schreiber is an excedllent choice. He does "menace" very well.

Why are they re-hashing Batman foes who have already been in the films? NO ONE is gonna top Jack Nicholson`s performance in the original movie, and there are plenty of other villains that could be portrayed. Hollywierd needs to stop doing what`s already been done and become more creative.

I third Liev Schrieber, the has the acting ability, the physical look AND he seems eager to do the job. As he said in an interview for "The Omen" remake, he "loves" the rumors of him playing Harvey Dent and that he'd love to be in a Batman film, but he hasn't heard anything offical.

the joker and two face are batman's two greatest foes and neither were portrayed to great effect in the earlier pop entertainments. batman begins was cast perfectly (maybe w/ the exception of holmes) - i know nolan will come through no matter how questionable the casting may seem beforehand.

Absolutly, cast Liev Screiber. Can bring a refreshing approach to the character much the same way Christian Bale did.FORGET RYAN "PRETTY BOY,WISH I COULD ACT,MR.REESE WITHERSPOON" PHILLIPPE.What a mistake that would be!

Uh . . . I beg to differ.
The essential part of Two-Face's origin is that his attack is the result of the belief that he's Batman
No one else on the possible list fits the bill and Phillippe has been as good as his material. Didn't anyone see Way of the Gun?

I agree with Dirk. Has anyone seen Phillppe in Crash, Igby Goes Down or Gosford Park? Those were all very memorable supporting roles (i.e - exactly what Harvey Dent is supposed to be).
I think Liev would be great as well, nothing bad to say about him.
I absolutely hate the fact that Erik just tosses out stuff like, "the guy simply can't act" about Phillippe....says you. What kind of a statement is that anyway? Oh, that's right. What you REALLY meant was, "This guy gets to have sex with Reese Witherspoon all the time and I'm writing in a blog." I got'cha, I'm sorry, Erik.

I've always thought that Ryan Phillippe could rise above the pretty boy muck and do some decent work, much like Brad Pitt, and to a degree he has. But I don't see him as Two Face. I don't think he has the chops for it. There's nothing I've seen him in that would lead me to believe that he can pull it off. I don't like the choice of Heath Ledger as the Joker but he's at least got the skill to do something with it.
As for Liev Schreiber, he'd be a better choice, I think. At least he has a commanding voice. But personally, they should just re-cast Billy Dee Williams and give him the chance that he never had with Tim Burton.

Poobah, congrats! That is the greatest comment to one of my posts in the history of comments. First off, I have seen Phillippe in all three of those films and the guy is about as wooden as the tree outside my window. How anyone can think this guy would make a great two face when he has never displayed an ounce of energy in any of his roles is beyond me.
Also, I'm not sure how you think my personal opinion of an actor directly relates to a dissatisfying sex life, but hey -- I guess we know what's on your mind, right?

I'm in my mid-20's bro, it's what every guy thinks about. Hey, if IT ain't on YOUR mind, Erik, then I'll start worrying about you. Don't make me do that.
I didn't say he would make a great Harvey Dent. I don't know that, and YOU certainly don't know that. I said that Harvey Dent is a memorable supporting role and that Ryan Phillippe has had several of those. I think Chris Nolan knows what he's doing and we should let him do what he wants with the series. Lord knows it could never get worse than Schumacker.
And by the way, your opinion, however right you believe you are, is about as important as the other 95,000 blogist/columnists there are on online. Oh, and about as important as the 95,000,000 people who reply to all of them every day as well.

Yeah. how dare you express your opinion on your own site. Cheeky bastard.
I think Ryan Phillipe can act, I just don't think he is a good choice for Harvey Dent. For me its more build than talent. I can't picture him walking in with a bunch of goons behind him and not looking out of place.

He seriously is a great actor he a has been in a couple terrible movies, but he's in some great ones also. I saw a few up top but check out Way of the Gun he rocks in it. It's written and directed by the same guy who wrote The Usual Suspects.

I technically believe we have seen the only joker that should have ever been played. Lane one question did you ever see the origional batman? Did you see the portrayl of the joker by jack. Evidently not. Tommy lee jones okay i agree was not very good as 2 face but to have jack not be the joker and is a crying shame. So i will not watch this movie if the intend to put him in this movie! and not be played by jack!

I agree with all the "dry and wooden" comments on Ryan "Pee-Pee". The only thing he has going for him is he enjoyed showing his butt in earlier films. The fact that he's married to Reeses-Pieces is a benefit no doubt after her award winning "robbing performance" in Walk the Line (Felicity Hoffman fans -you were ROBBED!!)Pee-Pee is the wrong choice. Period.

I know this debate is Schrieber and Phillipe centered, but personally I think someone older than both would fit the bill better. One person that popped into my mind for either the Joker or Two-Face was Steve Carell.
Well, maybe more for the Joker, but I think he could pull off the duality of Dent very well and show that he can do roles outside of the Frat Pack mentality. (not that there's anything wrong with most of them)

All of tis talk of Mr. Witherspoon as Dent. He is a terrible actor, not that he may not develop potential but that part will require a real man to do it justice. The perfect Dent would be Josh Lucas. He has the look, is a great proven actor and is the right age. I vote for Josh. If not Josh then Liev but no way on Mr. Witherspoon.

Erik, And somehow I would just bet that if Gyllenhaal were selected for any part in any movie, or any other endeaor for that matter, you would be orgasmic. Just a suspicion.
