More Batman: Ledger Out, Hoffman In?

And the Bat-rumors continue to fly folks. Not long after Ryan Phillippe's name was being tossed around for the role of Harvey Dent/Two Face comes word from Batman-On-Film, via an inside spy, that yet another offer has gone out. This time, it's directed toward the Bat-sequel's other villain -- Penguin.
The spy confirms Christopher Nolan's Untitled Batman Begins Sequel will indeed feature two villains: The Joker and The Penguin. While, supposedly, an offer has been made to Heath Ledger for the former, the spy notes that Ledger has not signed yet and is reluctant to do so, for whatever reason.
Also, said spy is positive an offer has been made to Philip Seymour Hoffman for the role of Penguin. Hoffman had been rumored to be a front-runner for the role, but has also indicated he may not get involved. Personally, I think Hoffman would be a wonderful choice for Penguin and, I imagine, would sit much better with Bat-fans who have already been scarred by names like Heath Ledger and Ryan Phillippe.

Gawd, I hope the Ledger rumors are false.
Seriously, folks, go rent Disc 2 of the *Doctor Who* (Series1) DVD box set through NetFlix, Blockbuster, or Hollywood Video. Watch Christopher Eccleston's performance in the episode "Dalek" (episode # 6) and then you'll be convinced that Eccleston was born to play the part of The Joker.
I only say "rent" if you are of the unwashed masses currently. "Buy" if you are already a fan.
I like Hoffman, but I don't think he would be good as The Penguin, especially in the incarnation of good ol' Oswald the arms merchant. Bob Hoskins is still the better choice, in my opinion. Although Hoffman might make a good Hugo Strange if one concentrates hard enough on the version currently seen on *The Batman* animated series and imagines a bit.

Jeremy! Thankfully someone else has seen the same light I have.
I have been preaching Chris E for the joker even BEFORE his excellent run on Doctor Who.
I am still wary of a double villian movie. In Begins, I was okay with it since story wise Scarecrow and Ras are smaller rouge members.
But the Joker? He needs a film all to himself.

it seems to me that the hoffman decision does not eliminate the ledger possibility...more so it seems to exclude a penguin inclusion.

I don't know about everyone else, but I think that "Batman Forever" was by far the best movie, and Tommy Lee Jones/Jim Carrey were outstanding.
They should tailor the next film into a similiarly energetic as well as funny movie. I say bring back Jim Carrey as the Riddler to team up with Devito as the Penguin.

Christoper Eccleston is not a Holywood bit part player. He is the finest stage and screen actor in Britain. The Joker would be a waste of his talents. If he was cast as Batman himself it would be more like it. But I doubt he would touch any Holywood film even if he was offered the starring role.

I agree with RP. Mr. Eccleston gives much thought to the roles and projects he takes. He's all about quality, not quantity. His interviews suggest he has personal values that probably wouldn't tolerate Hollywood antics very readily! And he doesn't need to.

Christopher Eccleston is a very fine actor, but I think it's an underestimation to say he would not consider the role of a villain rather than the main character. He played a supporting role in '28 Days Later', 'Elizabeth'... he is not against being a supporting actor when the part or script is good. For him, in all his interviews, he says it's the writing that he looks for... a good script.. if they pass him a good script, he would consider it. If the script is crap... well... enter Heath Ledger. Yeccch...
Hoffman would be an excellent Penguin. Any role he touches he makes his own. He could pull it off... the man is as fine an actor as Eccleston.

Who said anything about him not playing a Villain. Of course he would. But Batman is hardly in the same league as 28 Days Later or Elizabeth.
