Tips for Tuesday: New to DVD on 8/1
Filed under: New on DVD, Home Entertainment
Recent TheatricalsThe Shaggy Dog (Disney) -- Tim Allen must be stopped. Seriously. (filmmaker commentary, deleted scenes, bark-along bone-us track for dogs and I'm not joking)
V for Vendetta (Warner Bros.) -- Natalie Portman goes all dystopian on us. Very cool flick. (2-disc SE includes four featurettes and a music video)
Catalog Picks
A Fish Called Wanda Special Edition (MGM) -- So get this: It's got 25 minutes of deleted scenes, a John Cleese audio commentary, an all-new retrospective piece ... and MGM canceled the release! Are you freakin' KIDDING ME? Argh.
My Summer Story (MGM) -- The kinda sorta but not really semi-sequel to A Christmas Story that you never heard of. (no extras)
Richard Pryor: Live in Concert (Sony) -- For my money, the guy's best concert. Sunset Strip comes close, but this is the king at his peak. (no extras)
Direct-to-Video
The Black Hole (Echo Bridge) -- Judd Nelson and Kristy Swanson battle an electrical monster who fell out of a man-made black hole. Don't ask. (featurette)
I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer (Sony) -- And I'll always hate these movies, so stop making 'em. (filmmaker commentary, featurette)
Severed: Forest of the Dead (Universal) -- I don't know anything about this one, but the title makes me chuckle. (no extras)

The Fish Called Wanda SE got pulled due to the selling of the home video catalog of MGM by Sony to others. That disc will still be released, just not today (I too am very sad at this. This was one film I would definitely replace in my collection)

"Severed" is a low-budget Canadian zombie flick. Worth watching only for folks like you and I who don't mind genre crap like this.

Gotcha.
(I was hoping to review it for DVDTalk, but Netflix it is!)

I've got the VHS of A Fish Called Wanda and I've been wanting to replace it for awhile. And now I have to wait longer? Very sad.
"Bone-us" sounds too dirty to me for a kid-friendly DVD.

V a very cool flick? Why not try the Holy Bible the next time you read? Violence is why the world was destroyed the first time by flood. Nothing can stop the second, by fire (sorry Natalie, for the prophecy that you can't handle). But why is killing cool?
I saw this July 4, at NY NY in Vegas and there is something wrong with producers/directors and Natalie... they sure like putting her in bed (in the movie scenes and this one goes way too far, way too many). She is not the right person for the role. In the later part her goodness shines through and she does not play evil well (until post SNL, then she didn't seem well - post rap song junk, purhaps she's joined Jonah in rebellion against God?.... We have to ask her.) Whatever the case she's had a hard life, far from normal and gets the benefit of the doubt, but if it was up to Hollywood, she would go to hell. Trust mankind, or trust God? Trust Rabbi or trust God? Trust Julia or trust God? Did you already fall for the ole, "It's the adult thing to do."?
