Mac is Back (Again)

When Macaulay Culkin ended his nearly 10-year absence from the movies by starring as Michael Alig, a real-life, drug-addled, murderous, gay party-boy in Party Monster (a performance Roger Ebert described as "fearless"), it was clear that he was aggressively avoiding the mainstream cuteness in which he'd spent his entire childhood (though he did work the adorable on Will & Grace). Since then, Culkin has continued to pick his roles carefully, playing only a supporting role in Saved!, a well-review, smart indie comedy that was released two years ago.According to this morning's Variety, it sounds like Culkin's latest break is over: He's agreed to star in Sex and Breakfast, an indie project being described as a dark comedy. The film, which was written and will be directed by first-time feature helmer Miles Brandman, tells the story of "a couple with problems in the bedroom who seek solace from a therapist. The shrink espouses group sex as a cure-all." Ah yes, the group sex-fix -- I just read about that the other day in Time.
Also in the cast are Alexis Dziena, Kuno Becker and Eliza Dushku; there's no indication of which role Culkin will play.

Ode to be such a creative therapist with a patient resembling Eliza Dushku. I think I'd try to cure her smoking addiction with such a sagely recommendation!

As for *Party Monster*, I would disagree with Ebert's assertion that it was a "fearless" portrayal by Culkin. Culkin had no career at that point, so it was more of a desperate attempt - albeit a good one - at establishing himself as a serious actor. I'd say if anyone deserved being described as offering a "fearless" portrayal in *Party Monster*, it would be Seth Green. Green had (and still has!) an established career to lose (had his portrayal been panned).

I completely agree with The Jeremy. There was nothing "fearless" in Macaulay's acting in Party Monster - I'd add it was dull and expressionless. The part was generous, the performance - stingy. I was however throughly impressed by Seth Green - I am surprised that anyone could pan his performance.
As for Culkin, he has yet to convince me that he can act - not that I am holding my breath waiting for the epiphany.
I am surprised that he still get to pick and chose his offers, while other, proven talented actors do not have that luxury.

I think we need to stop being so judgemental and learn that people are way different than they were when they were little kids. Put yourself in his position what would people say about how you are now compared to when you where 9 0r 10 years old. We are free to grow up and express ourselves and go thru what ever changes come on with life and so he gets graded on his. I think he is a good performer in his own right.

Party Monster was scary. It was a look at an actor portraying himself. Not tough for Mac. Now this next role may be a stretch... unless he's the shrink.

Macaulay Culkin has a chance to seperate himself from the commercial human pot potilers like Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, not unlike Johnny Depp and to carve his own niche. That is a very smart move and I can't wait to see him play Jeffry Dahmer, it's not that unlikely.

I think Mac did a terrific job in Party Monster. As did Seth Green. They made quite a duo.
Let's give the kid a break. His cuteness and an aggressive father got him in the reels. Now it is his turn to take the roles that can prove him indeed an actor.

Pretty face....obviously not suited to masculine and/or straight roles. Should have stayed a kid!

I really enjoyed his acting in Saved! I thought it was very tongue-in-cheek and smartly done. I'll be excited to see Sex and Breakfast.

I think your all a bunch of fucking idiots.... not only am a I completely dumbfounded by your lack of respect and presumptions for a PROGRESSIVELY developing young talent... but also your complete lack of any comprehension of the sophistication and feel of the roles Culkin is now interested in pursuing... Culkin can act.... I have followed his work.. I believe that your statments claiming his acting merits are solely A) based upon the dormant comfort zones a viewer has, relishing in previous roles you have observed him in (i.e Home Alone, Richy Richy, The Good Son) versus the satirical, sublime augmentation of the roles that he now chooses to play (Party Monster, Saved!).... repspect an actor's authority over his own career to know ehen to change.. being an actor myself.. i can comply with mac's decisions to distance himself from his previous acting genre or stereotype... any self-respecting artist would do the same

I thought Mac and Seth were both incredible in Party Monster. Mac's character was supposed to have a vapid persona, and he was very convincingly real. I think he has a lot of potential, give him a chance.

Were he not so totally insignificant, MC might be a tragic figure. The old story: early fame, screwed up at home (his family was responsible for a fire in his Manhattan apartment building which killed two people), a teenage "marriage" and so forth. Sort of a Daisy Clover without talent.
On the other hand, if you've ever seen the kid interviewed, you'd have a real interest in keeping him in roles, where a director can teach him what to say and how to say it. Speaking for himself in interviews, he betrays a third-rate education, a contempt for self-improvement, and a general laxity which has and will continue to bear fruit in a career spiraling downward. Too bad, but let's not give him attributes he doesn't for a moment deserve.

I think Culkin is a brilliant actor. Anyone with any doubt about this should watch The Good Son. His performance in that movie was awesome. No other child actor of that time could could have so perfectly nailed that charactor.
