Next from WWE: The Marine
Filed under: Action, Thrillers, Movie Marketing
We reported back in April on the rise of WWE Films, a new division of World Wrestling Entertainment dedicated to creating and financing (as long as distribution is in place before production begins) vehicles for the wrestlers who ply their trade for WWE. The label's first film, a horror flick called See No Evil, starred Kane and was released earlier this year -- albeit to largely dismal reviews -- by Lionsgate. Though the original report indicated that WWE Films' second release would be a Steve Austin vehicle called The Condemned, it turns out that an action/revenge film called The Marine will be hitting screen in October; Austin's film doesn't yet have a release date. Now, I'm embarrassed to say this, but the Marine trailer really, really worked, at least on my little brain. It had me, as they, say at "hello" -- if by "hello" you mean "Robert Patrick as baddie." Patrick plays an evil, violent bastard who takes the wife of John Cena's character hostage at as a gas station, and drives off with her. Which, needless to say, is a bad idea -- in addition to being played by a badass professional wrestler, the guy is also an ex-Marine, giving him to ability to defeat legions of bad guys with his bare hands. What's so great about all of this, though, is the way Patrick has totally bought into his character's sleaze, and the sort of joyful irritation that colors his delivery -- you never dreamed "I tried to kill this guy twice today" could be pronounced quite so perfectly. He's basically playing Walken-lite, and seems utterly thrilled by the whole silly thing.
So, yeah. Maybe this WWE Films thing isn't such a bad idea after all.

There is no such thing as an 'ex-Marine.' the correct term is Former Marine. Any leatherneck will tell you that unless he is just claiming to have earned the title of Marine.

I liked the trailer as well. Sure, it's cliche but it worked. Robert Patrick looks great as the bad guy.
Also, Cena has a great look for an action type guy. They sold me with that trailer and I'm going to see it.

John Cena is my sons favorite wrestler so I am sure he and I will be at the movie. He will have many ideas about how to make it better I am sure. The Rock as the bad guy, Undertaker as Cena's friend and back-up, uh yeah he will have a blast with this. I can't wait!!!

The poster, at least the 4 commenters before you and the 3 after, and on some level you do apparently. There's an easy way to not read unworthy posts here, I sell a PDF describing it for only $29.99, it's entitled, "PgDown: Key to a Fulfilled Life."
I like the whole WWE Films idea. Good for WWE, great for the wrestlers that can escape wresling with at least partially functioning knees into something a little easier on the body.
I haven't really watched Cena since he came on the scene, got totally beat down but earned The Undertaker's respect in his first big match. But he looks the part, and I trust WWE to at least shoot for entertaining me instead of completely pissing me off.

Has Robert Patrick played anything but the heavy, ever? Even in his TV ventures,"The Unit" and "X files" he has not played a happy or fun guy. IF "Walk the Line" had a bad guy (besides Elvis introducing everyone to drugs) it was Robert Patrick's character of Cash's dad.

Surprisingly enough I enjoyed this trailer as well. Robert Patrick seems to fit the bad guy role quite well as does Cena in his role. I actually would not mind seeing this film at all.

I'm sure there are others, jmchez, but one that immediately comes to mind is Fire in the Sky -- he's great in that as a normal dude (who happens to have been abducted by aliens).

I just watched the trailer for "The Marine" and to me, I think it looks rather interesting. Who knew that John Cena could act? Judging from his performance on RAW every Monday, you'd never know it. Nevertheless, I think the boyfriend and I shall go and see it.

Preposterous, cartoony action films make me laugh (in a good way). The more preposterous, the better. This trailer gave me more laughs than anything since Triple XXX (which made me laugh so much that a guy in front of me got up and threatened me with violence - talk about being on different wavelengths).

Wow! I saw this post and thought, "If the John Cena is wearing a shirt in the trailer, I'm not going to see this movie."
But, I was wrong. This looks good, and Kimber from Nip/Tuck as the wife... YES!!!
