Quickhits: Lopez Leaves Dallas, Universal Finds its Leading Man and Mel to do Lethal Weapon 5?

Odds and ends from Thursday:
- According to a story in Star magazine, Jennifer Lopez has abruptly dropped out of the big-screen remake of Dallas, based off the classic TV show. In the film, Lopez was set to star as J.R. Ewing's alcoholic wife Sue Ellen, opposite John Travolta. No word yet on why she bailed, but it's certainly not the first time someone has left the production. Earlier this year, director Robert Luketic (Legally Blonde) quit after he was upset over casting choices. Hmm, I wonder if Lopez was one of the choices he was upset about. Shirley MacLaine and Luke Wilson are currently in negotiations to round out the cast. Personally, why not throw Sharon Stone in the Sue Ellen role -- she'd make a great alcoholic. Casino, anyone?
- Universal has snatched up rights to the comic book, The Leading Man, with Marc Platt Prods. and Closed on Mondays Entertainment set to produce. Comic, which is written by B. Clay Moore and illustrated by Jeremy Haun, revolves around the adventures of the world's biggest movie star, Nick Walter. Story follows Walter as he "uses his celebrity, access, lifestyle and his films' international location shoots as a cover for his real job, that of an international spy." Pic sounds fun, but I would imagine they would need a huge A-list celebrity to make this believable. Brad Pitt, maybe? George Clooney would also be fun to watch in a role like this. Thoughts? Opinions?
- The last thing I expected to come out of this whole Mel Gibson debacle was a movie rumor, but that's exactly what Moviehole reported on Thursday. Word around Warner Bros. is they've been down with shelling out another Lethal Weapon sequel for a couple years now, except Mel Gibson refused to be involved. Seeing as the franchise depended on Gibson reprising his role as Sergeant Martin Riggs, the sequel lost steam. However, with projects disappearing faster than Gibson's career, some folks are saying the actor may now jump onboard a Lethal Weapon 5, if only because it would be a good film to help win back some of his fanbase. Makes sense, no?

Gibson's whole problem is that he refuses to embrace his true nature. He's an anti-Semite - why doesn't he just accept that fact and run with it? Let's be frank here - there's a huge audience in this world for crazy bigoted crap. Want proof? Just watch any European soccer match, and see how many skinheads there are in the crowd raising Nazi salutes and waving swastika flags. If Gibson's career as a mainstream actor is really over, then it seems like a logical move to go for that young white anti-Semitic European niche market. Granted, he's going to have to adjust his lifestyle a bit; I can't believe there's that much money in catering to a load of dead-beat neo-Nazis. But then you never know; anti-Semitism is said to be very pervasive in the business world, so maybe Gibson could tap into that market too.

Jennifer Lopez for Sue Ellen? What were they thinking in the first place? She was a horrible choice to begin with. I don't really care about "Dallas" and probably won't go se it, but come on. Sharon Stone would definitely make a better choice for Sue Ellen and she has the baggage to go with the character. Just change her to a brunette. She could do the role in her sleep and it wouldn't hurt her career, or what's left of it.

Mel's career gone? Are the people in the media this stupid? honestly, all these stories about Mel's career being over = blowing things way out of proportion. Why?
1. Mel has hundreds of millions of dollars. He's in his 50s and he doesn't need the work. He can shuffle off and make comments about jews all he wants...his life won't change.
2. This is America - nobody is on the hook for long. Our worthless media is blowing this out of proportion while real problems with the middle east continue. Ironically, the problems in the ME will remain and we will all forget Mel made some ethnically charged comments about jews.
3. Hollywood forgives everything. Everything. Doesn't matter how awful you are. If you can turn a profit they like you. It's that simple. If his next film bombs people won't be shocked. If he makes a few smaller cheaper films and they turn a profit, guess what, in hollywood's eyes Mel is back.
Honestly, you guys in the media are making a mountain out of a molehill. And you're being incredibly naive to think 5-10 years from now this will make any difference in a man's life when he has more money than god.

Watch Gibson do it with him donating his salary to the ADL similar to what Sean Connery did with *Medicine Man* (?) in donating his salary completely to the Scottish National Party.
Then, he'll receive his pardon and be eligible to win another Academy Award by directing yet another anti-English film because nobody in Hollywood cares about slandering that ethnic group/nationality it seems.

Oh poor Jeremy felt a fictional movie slandered the poor wittle Engwish people. Good lord, even Gibson admits on the commentary that they amped up and changed things like crazy to create a compelling story. Movies are not history. The Passion of the christ was FICTION, as was Braveheart, Mad Max and Lethal Weapon 1 and 2....of course 3 and 4 were obviously based on real events.lol

I just love it! Sharpton and Jackson make racist remarks (anyone remember Jackson calling Jews "Hebes?"), and they're still saints as far as Hollywood and the press are concerned. The leader of Hezbollah is blatantly anti-Semtic and all CNN can say is that they're "surprised and curious." Mel Gibson makes a remark in a drunken stupor and everrone wants to hang him on Rodeo Dr.

bgdc,
Not only am I referencing *Braveheart*, but also the box office bomb *The Patriot* that Gibson starred in that was also historically offensive to the point of slander.
So I guess the moral of the story is that Gibson can make as well as star in films that distort the perception of history to Joe Public and slander entire nations/ethnic groups without apology as long as he does not utter remarks against the one group he offended this week.
Interesting logic. Reminds me of that cliche about a pot and a kettle for some odd reason.
