McGregor, Jackman are Tourists
Filed under: Drama, Thrillers, Casting, Newsstand
Production Weekly just reported that Hugh Jackman and Ewan McGregor have agreed to star in The Tourist (Jackman's involvement was originally announced at Cannes), a movie that sounds a whole hell of a lot like Fight Club, except with screwing instead of fighting. Here's the summary: McGregor will play Jonathan, "an accountant disconnected from life, who is reinvigorated by his new friend Wyatt (Jackman), a powerful and charismatic lawyer who introduces Jonathan to a mysterious sex club known as The List." Personal awakening brought about by cool new club? Check. And there's more: "Shortly after meeting the woman of his dreams, Jonathan becomes the number one suspect in not only the woman's disappearance and possible murder but also a 20 million dollar theft." Major crime, and the sudden realization of the sketchiness of your new best friend? Check and check. Now, don't get me wrong -- I'm not saying I won't see it, just that it's Fight Club, 2006.The film was written by Mark Bomback, Patrick Marber and Jason Keller, and will be directed by first-timer Marcel Langenegger; production is expect to begin in New York in October.

How is this summary of The Tourist like Fight Club? Because there are two guys in it. I think the reviewer missed the mark. Sex is not the same as violence. There is no alter ego involved as the offender. There is no larger commentary on society as reflection of the characters actions. There's no Brad Pitt or Edward Norton. There is just the thin connection of one guy being introduced to a new line of thinking and that's where it stops. It seems reviewers always love to hype movies of less substance with those of great meaning. Stop it!

From what I've read about this movie the thematical emphasis is on the disconnectedness of people, about people who want something from each other without having to deal with the messiness of an interpersonal relationship, rather than the carpe diem type themes that Fight Club seemed to be focusing on.

IT SOUNDS MORE LIKE "BAD INFLUENCE" WITH ROB LOWE AND JAMES SPADER THAN IT DOES LIKE "FIGHT CLUB".

What I think is that people should WAIT too see just how involved the movie is; with all the plots, twists, turns etc BEFORE we EVEN make a judgemnet call on IF it's a 'Fight Club' remake or what have you.
I'm an actor/model myself and it sometimes burns me up when fans or people, not in biz, make those kind of generalities instead of just waiting till the movie comes out - THENNN feel free to comment, but not before hmm!
[ in my humble opinion ]

Subject matter seems a bit 'off', but will go to see the film because.....
'THE McGREGOR' (Hoots mon) and Hugh Jackman are in it.
They are both the tops in their chosen profession!

mmm...any movie description that uses the words "Sex" and "Ewan McGregor" in the same sentence is definitely a 'do-see' for me... case in point: "Pillow Book" (yum) and we can't forget "Nora" now, can we?

I agree that people should wait until a movie actually is released before making a call on it.
Hugh and Ewan are both fine actors anbd will do well in any role they are offered. I like most will go see this movie just due to the fact that both Ewan AND Hugh are in it (from my point of view I'll be drooling through the entire film...Ewan and Hugh....What a fantasy!!), they will provide more than enough "star power" at the box office.
I am MORE concerned at the "first time director" status Marcel Langenegger has in this project. From what I've seen most, not all, first time directors usually blow it with actors of this quality. A seasoned director would have been a better plan. IMHO

Yes but Rychard....an UNSEASONED DIRECTOR usually or most times goes "ALL OUT" or 'GOES FOR IT' with 2 stars of there magnitude and KNOWS that there 'name alone' can & usually DOES carry a film. [IMHO]
