Disney Looking to Dump Mel?

According to the ever-reliable Fox News (those of you who get all upset about our Brokeback posts better appreciate this), Disney, currently slated to release Mel Gibson's Mayan epic Apocalypto in December, is now quietly searching for a new distributor for the film. The one name being mentioned thus far is Lionsgate, a studio that, as the Fox article points out, has been successful with a handful of other abandoned/difficult projects, including Kevin Smith's rather abrasive Dogma (not to mention the much loved, straight-to-video release Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood). Ever since the details about Gibson's arrest came out, there has been speculation about whether his public fall would impact the release of the already difficult-to-market Apocalypto; it would certainly be understandable if Disney simply wanted to wash their hands of the whole thing. More details when/if they emerge.

WTF? Abrasive? That film's so limp-wristed it's little more than a sunday school class with the F word. FWIW, I was raised a catholic and attened a jesuit high school. Nothing Smith mentioned in Dogma was new or controversial to even a moderatelt informed Catholic.

Mel Gibson is the public enemy #1?!?!?!?! that's BULL... I do not feel offended by him! that title is stupid (to say the less...) and anybody can be drunk or express their ideas: is not what people say, is if you want to listen what matters. I think he is having WAY too much attention about something so trivial, and if Disney is really looking for another distributor, well, that only reflects their mentality...

If it's a well made film who gives a piss?? Is the movie about an ancient Mayan culture that hates Jews?? I highly doubt it.

Mel Gibson should know to remain politically correct in the Hollywood environment. It was unnecessary for him to verbalize what is already known among the general population. By doing so he has placed his career at risk since Hollywood and the film industry is controlled by the Jewish and since about 90% of the actors/actresses Jewish.
I'm certain that he will experience about a 90% recovery of his career since the bottom line for those in control of the film/movie industry is MONEY. All can be forgiven by those in control as long as the $$'s are there--no matter what is said about them.

Let me count the ways Mel has demonized others. First it was gays...and now it is Jews. Who is next?

Some who is an alcoholic is really not responsible for what they say when they are drinking.
He was brought up with some one in his life at the time who must have been a bigot. I am sure this will never happen again if he gets the help he needs. This is a illness along with any other illness you can think of.

Mel Gibson has been hung on a cross by the Jews the same as his movie protrayed the Jews hanging the MILLIONS of christian's believe. I for one am (was) an avaid movie theater patron and tv viewer. I for one Christian am keeping a record of the small minded Jews with the big bank accounts made mainly from Christians. So just add you names to Ron Schnider, Barbra Walters, so I can try to start a grass root backlash to you small minded Jews so I can protest your effort to make a living in the LAND of the Free..

It's amazing to me that the war(s) in the Middle East don't get as much attention as does Mel Gibson and his alcohol fueled anti-Semitic rants. But, never willing to let facts get in the way of a good story, the one about Mel Gibson falling from grace grinds on anyways. I just went to CNN and saw the poll they were reporting on which said that 52 percent of people thought he wasn't anti-Semitic and 58 percent said they were still Mel Gibson fans. And that is with the constant drumbeat against him.
So sorry to disappoint, I don't think, and the american public doesn't think, that Mel Gibson has had a public fall. He's had an incident, he didn't kill anyone, he went into treatment, he's sorry. End of that story. What would be a good discussion is the history of movie stars that have had public/private incidents that have indeed led to a real public fall from grace. I'm thinking Fatty Arbuckle mostly. Having the wrong politics - Charlie Chaplin comes to mind.
Well, it seems to me that the movie Apocalypto was always going to be a hard sell and if Disney is moving on this it reflects more on that fact than anything having to do with Gibson and his abhorrent behavior.
And Fox always reliable? Fox news, where we decide the news, tell you what to think and let you agree with us Fox news? Oh joke. har.

Mel Gibson fell victim to his father's upbringing. I have had a similar experience with my father. The greatest generation was a bigoted one, and they tended to espouse their bigotry openly. I am not condoning Mel's behavor, but those childhood "recordings" if you are drunk, can just play on an on ....a rational person would inhibit them. I have heard Bill Maher exclaim that when drunk you reveal the truth... I believe this is a different situation altogether, when all sensible thought fades, due to intoxication, ones memory, as a defense, just plays old "recordings." I think Mell has demons. They seem to be tied to having young women hang all over him in a bar. That is the middle aged crazies at ones best. He can overcome them as well. However, there is movie history to be made. The golden triangle for Mel Gibson should be Braveheart, The Passion of the Christ, and the soon to be released Apocalypto. Disney is evtremely short sighted, the concept for this film is stunning. There has never been an attempt to truly capture the apocalyptic nature of the decline and total collapse of a primeval civization, as this, a fil shot whole in Mayan and in location. I can imagine the pressures of getting this film completed exaserbating an already stressed out Gibson. Let us not religate a first rate creative mind to the ash heap of film history. We have done so with Orson Wells because of his "political" and "controversial" ways. His films all butchered in some way by the Hollywood censors or the establishment of that time are considered to be some the greatest works in Cinema. What if Wells had the creative freedom to do more? What if a film like "A Touch of Evil" were not just a "B" picture, where the longest and most creative tracking shot in movie history was obscured completely with "Credits." We have all been reduced to idiocy many a times during our lives. "Let those without sin cast the first stone."

No matter how good of an actor Mel Gibson is, he will never be a box office hit again and all done by himself. No excuse when you are under the influence. When people are under the influence, they say what they feel, without any reserved thoughts. Shame on you Mel Gibson!

Could it all be just something to kick up interest?
I can't think of a single person who wouldn't go to see Apocalyto if it gets made, just to see what all the fuss is about.
Except maybe Jewish diehards nursing a hardon for Mel. And who cares?

I believe what Mel Gibson did is no less Honorable than what Bill Clinton did in the Oval Office. And let's see,Clinton is still a very public figure, hummer aside. If we want to start incriminating people for being drunk in public and making comments about others, let's really run down the whole list of trash that is Hollywood today. If you are not part of a certain group, you don't get your work even looked at.Reporters only see the supposedly "good you do". I know what I am talking about,I have moved writers out of Hollywood to other states, because they wanted away from the trash.Go to any club at night where the warehoused people(actors/actresses) hang out at.Yes I say that, these are people who are picked from a list, like warehouse employees do everyday, and are put into a movie or tv show to spew what some writer wrote. Then they are put away til the next need comes up. See how many of your favorites stumble out,or are escorted out. What about them. What about the ones who leave the country to run there mouths about AMERICA.What about the ones who said if Bush won the election, they would leave. When they goin'.Of course that'll never happen. But you all forget about these people fast.I can care less about any of their political or religious views.I am still an "AMERICAN" with a mind and can make my own decisions about people. As far as the Jewish community,I say,you are the great ones. You have lived and survived everything from the beginning and Mel Gibson's words aren't gonna crumble the Jewish faith. Show me an honest to goodness actor, and I will say, must be Mel Gibson or Tom Hanks or someone from early Hollywood, around the 50's or 60's.All they did is work and go to OLD VEGAS.
Get off Mel's back.Ever look at the early Disney videos, sexual inuendo big time. They even recalled the first video because of the cover. And they should want to wipe their hands clean of Mel,look in your own closet first.

Ok... I think it is a bunch of Bull for Disney to cut Mel! What about Linsey Lohan (Forgive the spelling). She has apeard in their movies and she is an under age drinker. They should never do work with her again. She shows that she can not go to work after heavy partying. She bounces from club to club. Hitting people while she drives.Having fights with other girls. I mean if they want to start a public annoucment on who they are dumping they should start with her. I mean Mel should not have done what he did. Everyone makes mistakes, especialy when they have been drinking too much. There are soo many people in the world who have done the same. They are just looking at Mel cause he is a star.I hope Mel is sorry for what he has said and done. If it is all true. And I wish him luck.

Mel is a great actor and a gifted director. He is also a man filled with loathing and hate. Speaking from experience, being drunk does not change your basic makeup, it just helps to erode the facade that keeps them in check. Mel's being drunk did not a of a sudden cause him to be a bigot, it just made him stupid enough to say it out loud. And you are right, we all really knew it anyway. The American public will still probably plunk down money to see his movies (not Apocoylpto--which was not a "mainstream" movie anyway, but likey his next action flick. I certainly feel that Mel's apologies are completely false, and only the day after sobriety and his plulist's opinions realizing the deep water he's in. I really don't care what happens to Mel. I know what type of person her really is and I will use my consumer's right not to pay a single cent to anything that he will make money off of.
As far of some of these other postings, how foregiving would you be if a jewish actor made such racial/discriminatory slurs towards your religion? Hate is hate, not matter who it is addressed to, and should never be supported not condoned.

This is in response to Bob Mc Ewen. You state that Mel Gibson uttered what everyone already knows??? Are you really of the mindset that the majority of people in America believe Jews started every war. That it was the Jews rather than the Germans that started WW1 & WW2. I'm also interested in finding out what part Jews had in the Vietnam War, the Korean War, The Civil War? And the idea that Jews make up 90% of Hollywood is just absurd. Jews make up only 2% of the American population and statistically are a minority in "every" industry.
So the issue isn't about being "politically correct" it's about being CORRECT.

The entire Mel Gibson saga only proves even those who reside on the highest level in the world of entertainment are not immune to personal or social problems. Thankfully, we all have options. If you disagree with Mel Gibson's viewpoints, you have the option to not hear him and better yet, not go see any of his films.

As the product of a mixed marriage (Irish/Jewish) I've seen plenty examples of anti-Semitism in my time, more than most probably because I "passed" with my Irish sounding last name. What I've learned is to not always judge people by what they say, but rather by what's in their hearts. Often, these kinds of comments are learned young, are reflexive and repeated without thinking. Others would gladly murder you if they could. The important thing is to understand the distinctions. Gibson's father is a notorious anti-Semite and I'm sure he heard plenty at home. I'd like to believe he reverted under the duress of being drunk and/or being arrested. Either that or he just dislikes Jews. That still makes him far from unique in my book.

It's free publicity. If it is controversial, it will make money and that is all the studios care about.
