Halo Lands a Director!
Filed under: Deals, Universal, Fandom, 20th Century Fox, DIY/Filmmaking, Peter Jackson, Games and Game Movies
Holy crap, it looks like the big-screen adaptation of the popular video game Halo is finally picking up steam. For a while there, this thing seemed all but dead in the water, what with a new screenwriter coming onboard and the release date getting pushed back. Add to that the news that producer Peter Jackson's Weta Digital signed on to handle the special effects for James Cameron's Avatar, thus casting doubt on their ability to handle two enormous projects at once, and things weren't looking so good for poor Halo.
But hey, good news: The producers just signed Neill Blomkamp to take charge and direct the film. However, the bad news is, well, who the hell is Neill Blomkamp? Apparently, the dude has done some extensive visual effects work on TV shows like Smallville and Dark Angel, as well as directing a few short films. So that's good, right? Yet, this is a huge project with a giant fanbase -- to give someone Halo as their first feature seems like a pretty big risk on the part of the studios involved. Then again, perhaps they see something we do not. Thoughts?

With a last name like that, he must have had a very "interesting" time in school.
And when I wrote "interesting" I meant "painful".
Why am I thinking of Gene Simmons when I see that guy's last name?

Less experienced, particularly first-time, directors are less likely to try to pull any auteur crap with producers who want a slick, commercial (read: "art"-free)production. Irwin Kirschner aside, usually a director with a few successful critical or commercial films under his/her belt will try to exert undue influence over a production, yeah? Which can be good (Cameron, Jackson) or bad (Shamalamadingdong). Hiring some dude who's done special effects TV seems about right.

I love this guys work! It's gonna be a great movie; Guillermo Del Toro would not have been the best choice for this movie, don't get me wrong 'cause I love Del Toro's stuff but Neill Blomkamp is gonna pwn this project.

Blomkamp has a good eye for visually interesting imagery. On a small scale he is awesome, I just hope he can keep the momentum going for a full length feature. Hopefully he does the game justice. Now Hollywood just needs to try and snag Chris Cunningham to make that Neuromancer movie that has been floating around the rumor mills for years.

A movie based on a video game? At least Uwe Boll isn't directing...

Halo isn't even that great of a game, it's fun for a about a month or two multiplayer. The story mode sucks. Games that are loved because of multiplayer can't become movies, they are going to come up with some stupid plot, just like in the game. Anyone who trys to make a movie out of Halo is out of his mind.
