Summer 2007 Looks Sweet!

With all the movie news and release date announcements flying here, there and everywhere, I haven't yet had the chance to feel out next summer's line-up. After all, it's only August, and we have a long way to go before 2007 starts to matter. However, when the Movie Blog threw up a list, the thing completely blew me out of the water. Oh yes, next summer has the potential to go down as one of the greatest in the history of blockbuster seasons. Check this out folks:
- May 4: Spider-Man 3
- May 18: Shrek the Third
- May 25: Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
- June 8: Ocean's Thirteen
- June 15: Fantastic Four and the Silver Surfer
- June 22: Evan Almighty
- June 29: Live Free or Die Hard, Ratatouille
- July 4: Transformers
- July 13: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
- July 27: The Simpsons Movie
- August 3: The Bourne Ultimatum
- August 10: Rush Hour 3
Okay, so they're not the most intelligent films. But if summer is supposed to be all about blockbuster popcorn flicks, then you are sure to get your money's worth out of 2007. Did I miss anything? What are you looking forward to the most?

Just proof that there are truly no original thoughts left in Hollywood.

I like how most of them are the 3rd movie of a set.

If by "sweet" you mean "loaded with the same damn crap as every other summer," then yes, I agree with you.

If there was a gun to my head and I was forced to pick one that interested me, I'd probably say "Ocean's 13" because even Soderbergh's misses are well made. But, honestly, this is a really depressing list.

Why the hate? Those are summer movies, not Oscar contenders. I'll be there opening weekend for at least half of those.
Spiderman, Pirates, and Bourne could actually be really good, and most of the rest look like good popcorn flicks. Sometimes you need to just turn off your brain, pop open a $10 box of Whoppers, and enjoy some empty entertainment.

I'm looking forward to Bourne Ultimatum. It might be the 3rd movie in the series, but they are based on a trilogy of books, so it's not like they are just milking the source material...

I'm not looking for Oscar quality movies to go see in the summertime. To be perfectly honest, the majority of the movies that DO end up on Oscar lists are the ones I end up waiting until they're on cable to watch, because I'd rather not sit in a theatre and watch them. I like the ability to sit on a comfy chair, have a drink handy, and have the remote nearby if I find the movie sucks TOO badly. If I pay money to see a movie, I want to feel I had a good time. Just because something isn't "intelligent" doesn't mean it's not worth watching. ;)
Anyway, back to the list o' flicks. As soon as I saw it, I was completely stunned. Wow. Just WOW. With the exception of Evan Almighty (nooooooooo), I think I'll end up seeing everything on the list. Hopefully I'll be there opening day (or close to it). That's an experience that's always enjoyable.
The only troubling movie on the list is Transformers. Try as I might, I can't seem to get myself really excited about it. I have a strong feeling it's gonna be...well, crappy. Here's to hoping I'm wrong, and that there's even MORE awesome, fun summer flicks coming out. :)
Although, come to think of it, 2007 in general seems to be a great movie year for me. Sooo many of the movies I want to see are coming out! It's almost movie heaven. :)

I agree. What do you want? Gone With The Wind? The Notebook? Another Steven Speilburg historical drama?

That list sucks out loud. I'd rather watch porno flicks for the story and production as opposed to this dreck!

The only two films that are not sequels are spin-offs of TV series (animated I might add). Summer of 2007 might be the last nail in the originality coffin in hollywood...

How can you say "...the potential to go down as one of the greatest in the history of blockbuster seasons."?
Every film except for Ratatouile is a sequel or rehash of an already existing property, and this is just further proof that the big studios need to change it up and be willing to experiment a little with smaller films and smaller budgets. I mean really -- sequels to the abysmal "Bruce Almighty?" and "Fantastic Four"? C'mon folks, how braindead are these studio execs?

That is such a pathetic list. Aging franchises (one of which will be directed by Brett Ratner) + TV remakes = one crappy summer

It could quite possibly be the best summer ever. But the comments about the lack of originality are difficult to argue. I wonder if we're entering a phase where someone can reasonably say "every original story has been told"? If that's the case, then isn't the same story with different characters just a different type of sequel, anyway? You can appreciate that the suits would rather gamble with something that's already worked than tempt fate with a new veneer for a new veneer's sake.

I think this slate of movies is gonna be good. I must admit I am a Fantasitc Four fan and this one might not be bad. Harry Potter is a personal favorite of mine. Shrek, Pirates, and Spiderman (all are 3's) are sure fire good movies and hits. Bourne's the new Bond so another hit. Live Free or Die Hard, Transformers and I might even say Oceans 13 aren't going to do so well. Rish Hour 3 might be alright but eh, I dunno. Not too crazy about the Simpsons but everyone is crazy about them so thats a Hit. I am agreeing, its going to be an interesting summer next year.

I don't think it looks like a terrible summer, I'm sure it'll be full of fine efforts. But it doesn't look like an exciting one, except maybe trackers for box office. (Actually, in that instance, it looks even more boring, because these movies' business seems kind of pre-set)
But I think that good, bad or indifferent, summer movie seasons tend to develop idenities based on the break-out hits, not the sure things. That "cultural phenomenon" thing people keep talking about. I think a sequel can never really be a cultural phenomenon, at least one that gives out yearbook points. Unless something new blows us away, 2007 at the movies will be completely bereft of an idenitity.

I haven't been to a movie in 5 years, with the exception of Passion of the Christ and a Harry Potter Movie that is pure evil witchcraft.Your writers need to get back in touch with reality. You can't seem to find one that isn't either obsessed with sex or violence or horror. And we wonder why our kids are committing suicide, killing each other and raping the girls who are dressing in outfits that are so skimpy they are doing nothing but advertising for it! Isn't anyone intelligent enough to remember the 'great' movies? They could be viewed in mixed company without being embarrassed. How about that! Hollywood needs to get it's act together and if they want to insert cuss words and sex scenes, put them in the disgusting porn stores and not in movies that kids watch or in my living room! Someday you will be held accountable for the damage you have done to the youth of this country.
I pity you. For heaven's sake, find some writers with talent and have the guts to put out an interesting story line minus the rot! Thanks, mp
