Another Christmas Carol
Filed under: Drama, Deals, Universal, Newsstand, Remakes and Sequels
I think there needs to be a commandment in Hollywood that goes something like this: "Thou shalt not remake a movie if there has already been a Muppet version of the story thou want to tell." If that rule had been etched on a tablet long ago, it would have kept Universal from deciding that the world needs another version of A Christmas Carol, which was quite ably done by Kermit and friends almost 15 years ago. But it wasn't, and they did. Universal's version, however will give the story an Exciting Twist!: It will be told through the eyes of Scrooge (ooh, edgy!), so we'll finally get to see what a pain in the ass that Bob Cratchit really is.The one plus in this whole thing is that the film is going to be directed by Lasse Hallström, who at least knows what he's doing. It remains to be seen, of course, whether the screenplay (by Todd Komarnicki, primarily a producer) will give him anything to work with.

We watch the Muppet version as a family, every year. It's a classic.

Isn't it already pretty much told through the eyes of Scrooge?

I like all of the different verions of A Christman Carol. They're all really good, and although it's the same story, each movie is different, so I can watch them back to back and not get bored of it.

Dang, how many versions of A Christmas Carol can there be???? And I agree, the one with Kelsey Grammer sucked, I thought. It was just like the stage show that was on every year at the Theater at Madison Square Garden (I saw the one with Roger Daltry playing Scrooge--I liked it, except that there was a stupid little boy who would NOT SHUT UP FOR THE ENTIRE SHOW!!! I WANTED TO SHOOT THAT KID DEAD!!!). I highly recommed "A Blackadder Christmas Carol" with Rowan Atkinson (it helps if you are a fan of the Blackadder series). It's basically the original story in reverse. He starts out as being friendly, kindhearted, generous Ebenezer Blackadder, who is visited by a ghost that accidentally shows him that bad guys have more fun. It's a classic!
