Pulse Director Doesn't Dig the MPAA or the PG13
Filed under: Horror, The Weinstein Co.
The American version of Kairo (aka Pulse) feels like it's been "coming soon" for about three years now. The flick's seen multiple release dates and delays, re-shoots and re-snips for the MPAA, and then one final debut jump with no press screenings in sight ... Voila. Pulse opens today at a theater near you.But first-time director Jim Sonzero has a few bones left to pick with the MPAA, as evidenced in this recent interview at Bloody-Disgusting.com (which I find semi-ironic, in that PG-13 "thrillers" are generally neither bloody nor disgusting). The director joked that "nobody under 66" was involved in the rating process, and he goes on to state "The MPAA, the studio wanted the PG-13 audience because we wanted to tap into and exploit Kristen Bell's market."
Spoken like a true auteur. Mr. Sonzero also makes it very clear that he's an "R-rated" movie fan who doesn't much care for PG-13-style genre flicks, which is just ironic enough to avoid discussing.
After some censor-friendly snips, Pulse is now rated PG-13 for "intense sequences of sci-fi terror, disturbing images, language, sensuality and thematic material," which makes me wonder why we even have a rating system at this point. One this arbitrary and stupid, anyway.

The whole ratings system is another example of the wussification of America. People are so afraid they're going to see something that bothers them - ooh, MPAA, protect me from the evil filmmakers and their naughty movies. If I see a nipple it might burn my eye right out! And hiding behind that whole "protect the children" stance - that's the most repulsive part of the whole thing. For gosh sakes, when I was a kid, I used to sit up all night watching gory horror movies, and look at me now! I've never murdered anyone or even come close to it. And sometimes there were nipples in those movies too. And guess what? I'm no more of a pervert than the average person (unless I see Aishwarya Rai, then I start dribbling on myself; but that's a story for another time). Seriously, America is in a bad place right now. People have gotten worked into such a froth over the prospect of being offended that they've stopped bothering to think about the thing that's supposedly offending them, and whether they SHOULD be offended or not. This is what happens when you make things too easy for people - they stop putting forth any effort. They become mindless drones, bundles of reflexes instead of thinking beings.

Wow yea i totally beleave with whats his name on the bottom just because the fact is, is that america can be such a pussy country because of how so many people will be turned into murders or perv.s just because of some movie content is not true it goes much deeper than that. That is what the description of the movie is for! If it talks about evil terror coming out of computers it is serious and not talking about some movie where it turns out to be like a viris or a prank. If you do not like scary movies then do not see them! So Do not ruin it for the rest of us who can take it and not be wusses! Peace out xoxox

The film rating system is inconsistent at best and is not something that I even pay attention to. I do not consider it to be objective nor do I consider it to be worth paying attention to.

I was so hyped up for this movie, waiting months for it's release. Annoyed that it was going to be rated PG-13, and be a non-gory, not scary flick, I still went. Having Pulse rated PG-13 ruined the movie experience....I'm 21 and I get real annoyed by little highschool and middleschool kids in theaters talking, usin phones, getting up, changin seats the whole length of the movie, and when I went to see it tonight, every one of those brats went to this showing.....Part of the reason movies are R rated is to allow the adults to enjoy a good movie once in awhile IN PEACE! For all you 13 year olds out there, SHOW SOME RESPECT! And thanks to those that do.
