IMDb Addict: Checking in With Friends

Seeing Courteney Cox in Zoom yesterday made me think, "Gee, I wonder what the heck the rest of the Friends are up to these days." This gave me an excellent opportunity to satisfy my freakish obsession for IMDb for the day by diving deep to see what else Cox-Arquette and her former cast mates are up to. If you're an IMDb addict like me, come take a look with me ...
Cox's close friend Jennifer Aniston has had a busy time in her personal life, what with breaking things off with Brad and hooking up with Vince (what do you think? Did she get an upgrade there?). Aniston wrapped 2006 early with The Break-Up, but appears to be gearing up for a busy 2007 with three films on her plate: Diary, a thriller whose description is "a married woman's diary is stolen and used against her"; The Senator's Wife, which, at the moment, shows no one but Aniston in the cast; and the one that shows the most promise from this vantage point, Wanted, in which she plays a framed cop who must break out of prison with her cellmate, played by Meryl Streep.
Courteney Cox has a couple more projects in the works herself: She has a role in The Tripper, the film by her hubby, David Arquette -- you remember, the one he lost the video of at Comic-Con? Yeah, that one, about a group of friends who head to a weeklong long concert for some good, clean, wholesome fun, only to be stalked by a killer with a Ronald Reagan obsession. And yes, Arquette (the male one) wrote it too. Can't you tell? Courteney will follow that up with the intriguingly named Untitled Courtney Cox Project, about what happens when a Southern socialite's daughter wants to be a hip-hoppin' fly girl.
The female Friend with the most serious streak thus far is Lisa Kudrow. Her last film of note was in last year's Happy Endings; she followed that up with a series for HBO called The Comeback, in which I thought she was quite good -- but apparently not enough people liked the show, because HBO canned it. Her only film so far listed for 2007 is Kabluey, about a guy who comes to help his sister-in-law deal with the kids while her husband is off in Iraq. I bet the wife (presumably Kudrow) ends up having a fling with the brother-in-law. I sure hope not, though.
It might be indicative of how his post-Friends career has gone so far, but I couldn't for the life of me remember Matt LeBlanc's name. I finally looked it up. He has nothing going on but his TV show, Joey, at the moment, and I don't even know if that's been renewed or not (I think not, though). I wonder how much LeBlanc splitting off from his wife and baby daughter has affected his perceived desirability in Hollywood?
Matthew Perry has a couple films lined up: Numb, where he plays the exhilirating role of a chronically depressed screenwriter (uh, yeah, I've dated enough of those guys in my day, I could do without seeing a whole movie about one) who desperately tries to stop being so morose and solopsistic for once in his life after he meets the girl of his dreams. Meh. Major, major redlight -- this film is written and directed by Harris Goldberg, who is personally responsible for the existence of the Deuce Bigalow films and, by extension, Rob Schneider's continued employment. Double meh. Perry's also listed on something called The Beginning of Wisdom, which has been around since 2005. Maybe something's finally happening there. It's about an old Montana rancher who has a romance with a young hippie. Wonder which one Perry plays?
David Schwimmer has been the most bankable male Friend to date; fresh off this year's successful animated flick, Madagascar, Schwimmer has four films lined up in the bullpen. First up is Big Nothing, listed as being in post; this one also has Mimi Rogers, aka The First Mrs. Tom "Scientology" Cruise. I bet she has some stories to tell around the set watercooler. Next up, Schwimmer is voicing two animated flicks, Ratatouille and Madagascar 2 (oh, you knew there was going to be a sequel to that one, didn't you?) Last up for Schwimmer is a film called Run, Fat Boy, Run (that's a working title, right guys?) about a chunky, clueless guy who leaves his fiancee at the altar, only to realize 10 years later that he was a freaking idiot.
That's it for our Friends cast members, folks. Which of the six Friends do you like best in their post-Friends careers?

You forgot to mention Matthew Perry showing up in Aaron Sorkin's newest 'Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip' - and the pilot of that is *excellent*
As for that Schwimmer thing called 'Run Fat Boy Run' - that sounds like a rip off of a 'Friends' script... maybe they were just "on a break", right?

This is a *really* strange post. I mean, it's not like the "Friends" have been gone for so long that we've started to wonder where they actually are.
Plus, your trip to the IMDB somehow failed to yield upcoming regular TV gigs for Courteny Cox and Matthew Perry, as if that sort of work doesn't matter.
I don't need to go to IMDB to know that the "Friends" are doin' OK.
One is in a movie in theaters now (Cox, "Zoom") and has lined up a drama ("The Dirt") coming soon on FX. One is nominated for an Emmy later this month (Kudrow, "The Comeback"). One starred in a $100 million blockbuster this summer and has been on the cover of every weekly magazine at some point in the past three months (Aniston). One is starring on one of the most buzzed about network shows of the fall (Perry w/"Studio 60").
Yeah, LeBlanc and Schwimmer don't have quite so much to crow about at this exact second. But it's been two years since "Friends" went off the air and Schwimmer has had a hit animated movie and done a bundle of other stuff and LeBlanc was on a show that ran for for two seasons.
But so what?
It'd be more interesting if you were tracking down the stars of "The Hogan Family" or "My Two Dads" and wondering whatever happened to Greg Evigan's career.

Lisa Kudrow also read the audiobook Secret Confessions of the Applewood PTA. She mentioned the book on her recent appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

I don't know how you can call yourself a Friends fan and not rememeber Matt LeBlanc nor realize that his show has been cancelled. I know that when leblanc signed on for Joey he was given a two picture development deal at WB, but I wonder if that was only if the show didn't last for 2 years, which it did.

Not mentioning Studio 60 is a major faux pas, even if this is a filmworld blog. You can't nail too many parts bigger than leading role in an Aaron Sorkin program.

Here another thing you left out. Lisa Kudrow read the audiobook for Secret Confessions of the Applewood PTA, a novel by Ellen Meister. She mentioned the book on her recent appearance on The Tonight Show.

Wow, write up a light little weekend post about the Friends and people get all up in your grill like you're reporting on politics in the Middle East.
Guys, do you honestly think I "overlooked" or "forgot" to include the non-film-related stuff? This is a film blog. Maybe I should have spelled it out a little more clearly that I was looking to see what the Friends were up to in the film world, since I saw Courteney Cox in a film, and that's what got me started thinking about it. I mentioned Lisa Kudrow's show only because I was actually a fan of it, and wrote it up for TV Squad before it got canned, and Matt LeBlanc's show because there was nothing else to mention about him.
And Jake, I never called myself a Friends "fan", because I'm not. It was cute little show, nothing life-changing, and Matt LeBlanc was (for me) the least interesting character on it. Why would it be shocking that I didn't remember his name or know his show has been canceled? I don't watch much TV, and --guess what? -- don't know which other shows were canceled this season either. So what? We're not playing the Friends trivia game here.
It was a deliberate choice not to list every single thing in IMDb about all six actors, folks. This was a short little piece, not an in-depth Friends analysis. If I'd listed everything, it would have been a 1,000 word piece, and then I'd have slews of hardcore Cine readers riding me about why the hell I'm devoting 1,000 words of space to actors on a dead TV show.

Hey Kim, if this is a film blog...why do you care about a TV shows cast and their post tv show careers?

As I said, Akbar -- because I saw Courteney Cox in "Zoom" this weekend and it got me wondering what the rest of the cast was doing in the way of films these days. Nothing more mysterious than that. If you're looking for something more controversial than that, sorry, it just isn't there.

My point is... you seem to care about what these people known primarily from a TV show are doing only in the world of film. It just makes no sense that you want to know what TV people are up to but dont even want to mention their other projects just because they are not up on the silver screen.

Hey, Kim. I don't know what is up with these comments, but I think it is cool that you gave us a quick update. I loved Friends, but didn't watch all of the episodes, because I am a busy Mom. I try to keep up with Jennifer Aniston, because I adore her. It's not as if you said you had the entire scoop of the cast's current "happenings". Sorry that people have nothing better to do than to tell others that they know more than them. Why are these people reading this if they already know all of it plus more? why didn't they take the time to write about it? Thanks for the info, Kim. I truly didn't know all of this, and doesn't mean that I wasn't a fan of Friends or the cast. I just don't have enough time to be a fanatic about anything, other than my family.

I don't see the big deal, I mean, it was just something that you did, obviously, because you found it interesting. If nobody else found it interesting, they or useful, they shouldn't read it. I myself love Jennifer Aniston, and, though it's not her greatest film, LOVE her in Rock Star (circa 2001). Also, in my own personal opinion, I don't think she lost anything when she and Brad "the OMG" Pitt broke up. I don't think he's all that great of an actor, not too much of a looker, and he's NOT God. I hope that she and Vince are happy together. Gosh! I didn't expect to say that much, but there it is!

Nice, easygoing blog. I loved Friends but never understood how Jennifer Aniston became a star. I think she is a shallow human being. As for trading up? Yes, BRAD traded up to one classy lady who doesn't accuse him of not having a "sensitivity chip". Remember the episode where Jen had a fat lip....LOVED that episode. I love Matthew Perry and am looking forward to his new show. Never watched "Joey" because it looked just plain stupid. I can do without Schwimmer or Kudrow. Cox, on the other hand, always is a gem. I have been a fan since she stepped on stage with Bruce all those years ago. I would like to see a Friends reunion one day down the road but my bet is Ms. Aniston will think she is too good to go back to television.

I have all 10 seasons of the series, could have watched 10 more years of the show. Love it, but the writers were way off on the last episode. It ended badly and such a let down. Thet could have done a much better job. Ten yrs of ivesting in the show and got shafted with the end.
