Jaa, Gondry Hit NYC

A couple of big names from very different sides of the cinematic universe have new films coming out next month, and they're both hitting the road -- New York, specifically -- to convince all of us their movies are worth our precious time and money. Landing first will be Tony Jaa (Ong-bak), the Thai martial artist whose The Protector will hit screens on September 8. In addition to attending an advance screening of the film at Brooklyn's Museum of the Moving Image next Sunday, Jaa will also offer a free, pre-screening martial arts exhibition in the museum's courtyard. So, even if you can't get a ticket to the movie, you'll have a chance to see Jaa kick some serious ass in real life, which is probably way cooler anyway. Then, on August 29, none other than Michel Gondry will make a stop at the Soho Apple store to promote The Science of Sleep, discuss his past film and video work and, one hopes, talk about his weird-ass dreams. The Gondry event is part of a series of evenings with independent filmmakers and is free (as, for that matter, is the Music of Idlewild panel next Tuesday night).
I've said it before and I'll say it again -- for a movie-lover, New York is pretty damn cool.

Ong-Bak was very cool. Not just as a martial arts film, but as a story in its own right. I hope he hasn't gone the way of Jet Li, and eagerly await this film.

I like martial arts. Maybe because it's dramatically interesting... or because there is blood. Well, what can I say - Tony Jaa is a specialist in martial arts, but bad actor

The Tony Jaa movie is nothing more than a re-branding of a movie that has been available for awhile, "Honor of the Beast" (IMDB has it listed as "Honour of the Dragon", but my DVD case begs to differ)...
For those interested, the movie is one of the most ridiculous martial arts movies to grace this planet, utilizing amazing physical feats in place of expensive special effects. On the down side, the storyline is a bit odd, mostly for the fact that it makes little sense.
For those impressed by such things: HE FIGHTS A BUNCH OF WRESTLERS THAT THROW A BABY ELEPHANT THROUGH A WINDOW!!! Also, he opens a total of 2 doors in the whole film (as for the rest, he throws other people into them instead), and he breaks nearly every piece of glass in his fight scenes. Watch this movie with friends that enjoy crazy martial arts films. :)

Yes, "the Protector" has some AMAZING action sequences and fight scenes... but the plot is ridiculous, full of every martial arts movie cliche. Still, worth it for the incredible fight sequences. Tony Jaa is really an incredible martial artist.
