Monday Morning Poll: Here Come Those Damn Snakes
Filed under: New Releases, Fandom, DIY/Filmmaking, Movie Marketing
After months of reporting on the internet phenomenon that is Snakes on a Plane, those pesky little critters finally attack theaters this Friday. Thank God. I'm not sure I could go too much longer -- fact is, these mother-f***ing snakes are getting on my mother-f***ing nerves. And I know I can't be the only one who feels this way.
If there's one aspect of this film I'm actually looking forward to, it's seeing just how much influence the absurd amount of internet buzz will have on the flick's box office numbers. I'm also curious to see if the recent terrorist scare will keep folks away from this type of film in its opening weekend. Sure, it has built up a substantial cult audience prior to its release, but will that be enough to catapult it out of the gutter? After all the marketing nonsense, let's see if we can't predict how well Snakes on a Plane will do.
So, I ask you: Will you be seeing Snakes on a Plane this weekend? If not, why? And how much you think it will make?

I'll be there and I'm guessing $40 million. Do we get a prize if we are closest? Because in that case I want to guess $4,345,632.39

If there's any movie shows lots of promise in such a simplified concept, it would have to be this moive. You're goddamn right I'll be there. Samuel L. commands it. $50M+ m*thaf*cka.

Oh heck yes. Although my boyfriend refuses to see it, as to most of my friends. So I'm sure the numbers will be interesting, possibly even a little more conservative (32 million), because it seems like a "Love It or Hate It" type of thing.

13-16 million. I know there's a gap in there but I don't really know how much the internet buzz is worth. I do think it will save the movie from opening at about 7 million though.

I can't make it this weekend, but I'm betting it'll make close to 50 mil. So much hype! And it looks fun.

no, i definitely won't be going to see that dumbass movie this weekend.it looks so pointless. i mean, snakes really don't attack unless they are provoked. i imagine it will make something around $10 to $15 million. and look at the title. SNAKES ON A PLANE!!! it's so dumb.

I'm going to see it on Monday, so I won't be in the weekend numbers. I think it will open at around $20 million. But, I just pulled that number out of my ass.

Hell yes, I'm going Thursday at 10PM!!
It needs to make at least... $91,774,413. That way it can become top R-Rated weekend and show the world that it's not about the movie, it's about the marketing (which... could be a good or bad thing).

Anyone not planning to see "Snakes on a Plane" obviously hasn't received The Phone Call from Samuel L. Jackson. Personally, I'll be at the advance showing at 10 pm on Thursday.

I'm not going. For one, because I'm pretty busy this coming weekend. And for two, it's a given that when the critics don't get to screen it, it means it's really craptastic. I suspect after the opening weekend the buzz around the net will be that it wasn't nearly as fun to go to as they were hoping it was. I'll wait to see if anyone actually is entertained instead of disappointed before I decide whether or not to cough up $10 to see it in a theater.

I'm totally going, Friday night at ten, with a bunch of friends after band practice gets out at nine. It's gonna make the estimate of around $40-50 mil. Because the cult is apparently that huge. There's already an audience participation script and everything.

"Snakes on a Plane" isn't worth my $9 to go see it in the theater. And it won't be worth my $3 to rent it later on, either.

Its opening in 3,300 theaters and feels like it will average about $5000-6000 per theater.. so.. Ah, forget it! Im just gonna wing it, $18 million.
It would be fun if it did astronomical numbers though. Or even $30 million.. Fun and scary.
