Oh Good, a Bass Fishing Movie
Filed under: Comedy, Drama, Sports, Deals, 20th Century Fox, Newsstand
First of all, I'd just like to say that I'm not opposed to the presence of bass fishing in movies. In addition, I accept that, when approached from certain angles, it can be entertaining rather than ponderously boring. In fact, my single favorite moment in Jerry Maguire is when, near the end of the movie, Rod Tidwell is on a talkshow, and he talks about how a relative lost a limb in a bass fishing accident. I mean, that was hilarious! (That said, however, I'm not a big Cameron Crowe fan, so the things I like about his movies might be slightly unconventional.)My point here is that I'm not pushing an anti-fishing agenda when I tell you that Fox Atomic's plans to make a movie based on the autobiography of that annoying, loud fishing guy who yells on ESPN sometimes is a terrible freaking idea. That annoying guy's name (and those of you who have no idea who I'm talking about should consider yourselves lucky and move on) Mike Iaconelli, and Fox just bought the rights to his life story, published (with the help from a couple of actual writers) last year as Fishing on the Edge: The Mike Iaconelli Story. While it's obvious why the studio is drawn to this guy -- He has tattoos! He's edgy! He pisses people off AND is good at his sport! -- it's much less obvious how they're going to turn his life into a movie that mainstream audiences will want to see.

I think the movie will be great the fishing industry, but I think it should have come sooner about guys like Danny Brauer, Rick Clun, or other guys that really got the sport going big time. Look forward to movies about other outdoor sportsman.

Too bad that Hollywood would pick a "Bass" fishing show. Yes, I agree, fishing for the same fish day in and day out is, and can be, extremely boring. Now, if Hollywood really wanted to do a movie on fishing then they should set their sites on Capt Blair Wiggins, host of the "Addictive Fishing" saltwater fishing show. (www.addictivefishing.com). Not only is he exciting to watch, he's funny as hell too. And this guy can fish! Every week he's out catching a different species of fish so the show is never boring. Check this show out when you have the time. I think it's on FOX cable network. After seeing this show for the first time you'll definately be addicted! Tight lines everyone!

It's a movie I will watch! Many people don't "get" competitive bass fishing, but that's okay... I don't "get" some of the other activities people call sports either. Although my husband and son (we all fish competitively) make fun of me for LOVING Mike Iaconelli, I'd say they would love to see our favorite sport on the big screen. GO MIKE! I'd fish with you (or against you) anyday!

I have to agree about annoying Ike. He's living proof you don't have to be quiet to catch fish. A better choice for a movie would be the young man without arms and legs,[who's name escapes me],who also fishes professionally. He is truely inspirational!

As an avid sports fisherman I think that competive fishing is the worst thing that has ever happen to the sport. It is medium for the tackle and boat insdustry to promote and sell the latest and most expensive and usually worthless products.
Competitive fishing is the exact opposite of everything that is good about fishing. Fishing is about enjoying the outdoors and relaxing while lerning a skill for no other reason than to enjoy it. Fishing should not be about money and fame. People who watch competitive fishing need to get off there asses, pick up a rod and reel and spend some quality time on the water.

I have been fishing my whole life. I was six years old when I cought my first fish. My grandmother went fishing the day before she passed away, and even then we had an arguement over who had cought the biggest fish. I never met anyone that would say their fish wasn't the biggest, didn't fight harder, or failed to strip out more line than everyone else's. Unfortunately I never have cought one worthy of a movie. My favorite fishing movie is called " A River Runs Through It." It's about the things a man and his son learn from their experiences while fly fishing. I can only hope this movie is the same, because fishing isn't noteworthy; whereas, the things that surround us as we fish our way through life are!

This is hysterical. Redneck vs. the fish. The challenger with the latest high tech graphite rods, scented baits, glow in the dark lures and way too much free time on one side and on the other side, the fish with all of three brain cells to rub together. Even match? I bet the fish wins. Only way to work this is Caddyshack meets Jaws.

I think it's great! Maybe there could be a scene where a snake that has been hidden in the livewell can come out and attack! Or, he's using live bait only it's not just bait but radioactive crawdads that grow to 6 feet long and attack Jimmy Houston! Then Bill Dance could come to rescue him but trip over the trolling motor and break a rod tip off in his arm! Then the ghost of George Perry could appear with his 22 lb 4 oz World Record Bass and make etouffe out of the giant crawdada with Emeril! Man, that would be great!
Oh yea, Samuel L. Jackson would HAVE TO yell, "I'm tired of all these MoT$#@&-F&^%$#ng crawdads in my Mot^%&$r-F&^$&^%ng BASS BOAT!
I'll even do a cameo if we can find the right sunglasses.
FIRE UP THE CAMERA BOYS, WE'RE GOING FISHIN! YAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHOOOOOOoooooooooo........

Should be an interesting look inside a once predominately southern sport that is rapidly growing nationwide and also internationally. IKE has his ups and downs but you have to respect his skill as a fisherman and marketing himself. I think it will be good for the sport and for the idiots who have no idea what they are talking about when they say competitive fishing is the opposite of what is good about fishing.

I won't watch any outdoor program with this guy on it. Why Fox would pick this "freak" over the real heros of the sport is beyond me and the group of fishing buddies I have. Hank Parker, Rick Clunn, Denny Brauer, Bill Dance, Jimmy Houston, to name a few, are people that young people can look up too. They have done a great deal for the sport. This guy has done NOTHING for the sport!!!

Bass fishing is turning into NASCAR on the water. Some of the top professionals are leaving the BASS tour because of the hoopla; i.e., ugly painted boats, unprofessionalism by entrants, discourtesty on the waters, etc. If they want to make a movie about bass fishing, then Rickey Clunn, Denny Brauer, Roland Martin, or some other established, proven veteran of the sport should be illustrated. Not some brash young upstart. My thoughts.......

As much as I admire Ike's intelligence and fishing abilities (and I am also originally from NJ), his demeanor while fishing really annoys the hell out of me. I realize his actions help him stand out from those of the other competitors, but I wish he would restrain himself, as I find it embarassing to some extent.

I like the idea of a movie about the sport of fishing. If anybody does't think that bass fishing isn't a sport then they have never done it on a competitive level. It's easy to fish saltwater and catch fish of all kinds but to target just bass with fake baits is truely a challenge.
