Sony Rains Meatballs
Filed under: Animation, Deals, Sony, Newsstand
As someone who really likes to eat, I've often wondered how crazy life would be if food all of a sudden started falling from the sky. That's right, I think about this kind of thing. Usually when I eat. Because I really like food. Did I mention that already?
After reading that Sony Pictures Animation just acquired the film rights to a children's book called Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, I immediately wanted to run out and purchase said book. Set in a world where it rains juice (Yum!) and snows mashed potatoes (Double yum!), the book was illustrated by Judi Barrett and Ron Barrett. The movie's plot is said to surround "a scientist who tries to solve world hunger only to see things go awry as food falls from the sky in abundance."
Meatballs marks the studio's fourth animated pic to go into development, with its first (Open Season) set to hit theaters next month. As of right now, the film will be directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

I'm with you Erik. When I read this story, my only thought was "How is food falling from the sky awry?!"

This was one of my favorite books growing up! I actually bought a copy of it a few years ago I liked it so much. It would be interesting to see on film. The book is great and the people's lives are great with food everywhere. You get hungry just reading the first five pages. But the awry comes in when the pancakes raining from the sky become the size of football stadiums. Your imagination should be able to take you ffom there.

This was indeed my favorite book growing up. I also have the sequel book, called "Pickles to Pittsburgh".
It's a wonderful story, beautiful illustrations, and I book I read over and over. I now enjoy sharing the story with my own children.
I am, however, skeptical that they can make this into a movie as good as or better than the book. I hope they prove me wrong. Sometimes our imaginations are better than anything they can do in the movies...
