The WTF Files: Ace Ventura 3??
Filed under: Comedy, Remakes and Sequels
Cinematical quarterback M. Fischer recently shared with us a fresh piece of Hollywood news effluvium regarding the creation of an Ace Ventura 3, which will go into production without the inclusion of one Jim Carrey, also known as "the actor who played Ace Ventura in two movies already." And while I have no real problem with studios churning out brain-dead sequels that nobody wants (hey, they're fun to review!), I just had to drop by and share my thoughts on this news, and those thoughts are these:Someone at New Line just got hold of the world's most powerful pound of marijuana.
Seriously? An Ace Ventura 3 without Jim Carrey? This sounds like the sort of movie news that you'd find on the front cover of JoBlo's on April 1st. Why do I say this? Well, it's certainly not because I think that "Jim Carrey in Ace Ventura: The Aardvark Chronicles" would necessarily make for a good movie, but let's just look at the numbers for a second...
- Dumb and Dumber (1994, production budget of $17 million, starring Jim Carrey): $127 million domestic box office / $247m worldwide
- Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd (2003, production budget of $19m, not starring Jim Carrey): $26m domestic / $39m worldwide
Now, you don't have to be Paul Dergarabedian to figure out the formula here: People think Jim Carrey is funny. It ain't the title; it's the star, you knuckleheads. But the lesson was made even clearer right here:
- The Mask (1994, production budget of $23m, starring Jim Carrey): $119m domestic / $351m worldwide
- Son of the Mask (2005, production budget of ... $84m, not starring Jim Carrey): $17m domestic / $57m worldwide
I mean, c'mon. If the message were any clearer, it'd come with a free bottle of Windex: Stop making Carrey-less sequels to movies that ONLY made money because of Jim Carrey in the first place! Why not just stick 39 million one-dollar bills into a giant suitcase and drop it into the gibbon cage at the zoo?
And just for the record, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994) cost $14m and made $107m worldwide; Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995), which looked a lot cheaper, made $212m worldwide. Depending on who New Line hires to play Ace Ventura Jr., we're looking at a global gross of about ... $49 million. I mean no disrespect to the studio that gave us Freddy Krueger, Austin Powers and Blade, but c'mon fellas; surely there's a better way to spend your Lord of the Rings booty than this.
[Special thanks to BoxOfficeMojo for the stats.]

It looks like in New Line directors and producers are crazy or dumb. Really, how they can make Carrey sequals without him?! Does he want too much? Or he is too old? I don't think so. But what about now... Jim Carrey is not the same, as he was. His new films aren't so popular as old one. But let's see, what a crap New Line will produce

I think the folks over at New Line are cagey, fast and wile. See, what they're doing is producing a flick that's doomed to failure, ala "The Producers". Never mind the numbers, they're gonna make a bundle. Only a few Carey fans who are desperate for anything related to the Jim Carey of ten years will go see this sure to be "Piece of Garbage."

--Yeah, they were called A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE and THE NEW WORLD. Two of the most un-Hollywood films a studio made and released last year.

Dumb and Dumber
Its either sheer greed or stupidity to want to make a "Ace" Movie without Jim. I guess they figure lower budget means more profit. This is for the real Jim fans

I won't be stupid enough to say any of those sequels were good, but look at the Dumb & Dumberer numbers you posted. It made more of a profit for the studio than Superman Returns did. That's a failure? Can we criticize them for making low budget/high yield films? Isn't this what Hollywood needs to start doing more of? Reducing their over-blown budgets, their $20 mil salaries to Brad Pitt? Of Catwoman's $85 mil budget, $14 mil went to Halle Berry. That's over 16%.
The probelm isn't that they are making terrible films. The problem is that people are going to see them, the filmmakers are turning a profit and that some hack director who does nothing to further the art of cinema, is going to make Big Momma's House 3.
Look at Dukes of Hazzard. Nominated, but for some sad reason, didn't get a Razzie award this year. Its budget was $63 mil. It made over $80 mil in the US alone. Any stock broker would give their picking finger for that kind of return on an investment. In fact a staggaring number of Razzie nominees make tidy profits. We can make fun of them as much as we want for their crappy art, but who is the real sucker here?
So who should we blame? The producer who thought putting tight shorts on Jessica Simpson might force more blood into her brain? The studio who thinks next year's CHiPs will put their kids through college? The hack stars who were able to buy a new Trans Am (because Trans Ams are f**king awesome!!!!) with their paycheck in a movie that no one will remember in 3 years? Or the viewers who thought seeing the General Lee jumping a gulch on the big screen would somehow look better than on thier Magnavox?
Oh yeah, I forgot. It's the movie pirates that are ruining Hollywood.

SURE. Lets have the next Terminator movie starring Woody Allen. And Ben Stiller can play Indiana Jones. And Rob Schneider as Dirty Harry. There ya go!!! Come on 'executives'. It's the STAR that made the movie what is is today. And once it's a HIT, it belongs to THAT star. ESPECIALLY if they're still of an age to pull it off, or even want to try. Perhaps you're thinking 'JAMES BOND', 'SUPERMAN'. Circumstances prohibited those series continueing with the same actor. But has Jim Carrey said NO? And if so, has enough money been thrown at him to get him to say YES? Or will you save money by producing a FLOP? Ultimately your call. Then OURS!!!!!

Wow, I must say, these guys are retarded. First off, you can't make a sequal without the original star of the movie. Its just plain pointless. Sequals never turn out better than the first one when something like that happens. Now, I happen to be a huge Jim Carey fan. Everybody knows that no one can capture the character like he can. No one can replicate the humor and the impact that he has on the screen. As far as im concerned, New Line is going down the F**king drain with these stupid sequals.

It's not all that bad. Lets hope they can get a solid script with a good plot and character development. The right actor is also needed. I'm very sorry to see that Jim is not in it but there are other actors out there that can possible pull it off.
For instance, Kirsten Myburgh who is said to be in the Tintin movie, he could do a real good job. I saw him acting once in LA. I thought Ace Ventura when I watched him act that particular scene. It was amazing. I hope Morgan Creek can get him to do it, or someone as good (yeah right).
I found his web address: http://www.kirstenmyburgh.com
I really hope this is a help to all you fans out there.
I love Ace Ventura. I'd hate to see it get ruined.

Scary Movie may be a joke to see but one thing I have admired, the same quirky cast members are there even though they have been murdered ten times before. But it works for me beacause my take on it is What are they gonna do next. Freddy on Elm street wasnt changed, there were recurring cast members from the first movie intertwined in some of its sequels. Jim Carrey is Ace Ventura and it should stay at that. This isnt a James Bond movie where we are used to and expecting to see who is the new 007 star. This also worked for Batman. But a movie like Ace ventura needs Carrey to pull it through. Quite frankly any movie that Jim does, He should be kept in character.
Now, to address his wanting for a more serious role, well he's an actor so I am sure if he can pull these movies to success he can do it in a serious role as well. Hollywood needs to stop type casting and allow actors the choice the of charaters they can become. Its they're passion to act. I think Carrey can be seen in awesome roles if given the choice. This in return would give him the wanting to return to his comical side from time to time and giving the audience to laugh and cry with his characters.
