X-Men Vs. Superman: Did Fox or Warner Get the Better Deal?
Filed under: Deals, Warner Brothers, Box Office, Fandom, 20th Century Fox, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels
The venerable Anne Thompson at The Hollywood Reporter has an interesting piece up on the backstory around Bryan Singer's decision to bail on the third X-Men flick and head to Warner to make Superman Returns. Thompson speculates that, although Fox may have won the battle of the box office returns between X-Men 3 and Superman, Warner may yet win the war, having craftily swiped proven tentpoler Singer away from the competition.
X-Men, Thompson says, is pretty much over and done with, although there may yet be Wolverine and Magneto spin-offs (which, she notes, X-Men 3 director Brett Ratner will likely not be involved with), whereas Warner is just getting started with reviving the Superman franchise especially with a storyline involving the son of Superman and Lois Lane -- a potential for a superhero who's less of a goody-two-shoes than his father.
What do you think, comic-movie fans? Did Warners get the better deal here? Is X-Men as a franchise history at this point? And do you care about seeing a Superman sequel?

Singer is a SuperHero Movie GOD after reviving the Superman Franchise. It was truly a fantastic movie.

I really enjoyed x-men 3 and as for superman it tanked at the box office, just making more then it's own budget. I don't think superman can pick up enough steam to be as succesful as x-men

Personally X-Men 3 was good and the new Superman sucked hardcore. I dont know about anyone else but when superman says "Truth, Justice, and all that stuff" it just makes you want to slap him. taking out "the american way" and putting all that stuff in just makes him look stupid ... plus the whole lois lane and supermans baby is pretty ghey. What they basicaly say there is that he bangs lois leaves her with a baby and comes back with "superwoman" very nice do what superman did kids. they just need to redo superman the right way and make more X-men too.

Last I heard most people thought Superman was an overhyped, unfulfilling movie, and the talk of the X-men being done... while 3 really plays havoc with certain characters, the team has always been fluid, and Xavier's had to deal with worse in the comic. I'd say the X-men are more salvagable than Superman is.

I feel X3 was the best X done!
Brett Ratner was very impresive. I could do without the spinoff's! As for Superman Returns.... Well... WOW! amazing! Reeves would be happy!Singer brought to the screen the originality of the first films and mixed it up with today! I can't wait for the sequel. Nice! Superboy not a so good superhero as father. love the story line

Well to me Warner Brothers is just getting started with Superman. X-Men is done. I think is Bryan Singer Returns to hel another Superman Movie the budget will be lower than SR. I think Superman will die in the next one and his son takes his place in the third

Honestly, I was more excited for Superman than I was for X-Men and I have always been a HUGE X-Men fan - Superman, not so much. But in my opinion, Brandon Routh truly breathed life into the character.
Sure, many people say his performance was stiff or attack him for being another new up and coming male Hollywood actor or a former soap star, but the truth is his performance was AMAZING. Both the Superman and Clark characters he portrayed had to seem a bit stiff. They had to pretend to think nothing of the other - let alone know the other existed. In the midst of this, they were hearing all sorts of emotional news on whether or not the people needed a Superman, allthewhile helping the people and doing all they could. You could totally feel the emotional havok in his performance. Sure, Superman wasn't the most action-packed superhero film in the history of the world in terms of excessive brawls. But I felt it was definitely one of the most action-packed superhero films in spite of its simplicity. The entire thing of him saving people and...well, I won't give too much away. Too sum it up, it was awesome and they really told a story and gave the audience a great emotional connection with the feelings of both Superman and Lois Lane (although the latter gave a somewhat forgettable performance - where's Teri Hatcher when you need her?).
And the X-Men franchise? Are you kidding me? Have you been watching how badly Halle Berry has been butchering the most popular female comic character of all time? That alone gives Superman the upperhand. I hope they give - if no one else from the Superman Returns project - Brandon Routh another chance in the next Superman film. He truly soared.

I can't believe people are praising X-3. X3 was terrible, and this is coming from a big X-Men fan. Superman Returns got me excited waiting to see the next film, while X-3 kind of made me happy it was done with. Unless Singer comes back to make more X Movies..

I have been only interested in the first 2 Superman films. I have always been a die hard X-Men fan from grade school years. I would have loved for someone else to have played Storm but Halle Berry did the best she could have done with the role. Since Halle has said that she is done I don't think the X-Men should be done. There is still many things do be done with the series of films. The better technology becomes the better the films will be. Fox should consider extending the franchise. Storms role should be explored a great deal more. Think about it guys there are fans still waiting to be made and $$$$$ to be made from this franchise.

If you look at the history of movies, then it's easy to tell which of these stories has the better potential. And I'm talking about for both hardcore fans and simple movie goers. Notice what hapened when they decided to bring back star wars. What was once a mind blowing adventure, was suddenly dull and empty, even with some the best special effects ever seen. In my opinion, this is exactly where Superman is headed.
X-men on the other hand, is fresh, and new to people who haven't read the comics, and therefore presents a much greater interest. At the same time, every nerdy X-men guru I know is ecstatic about seeing Wolverine with bone claws, and the hard-core Superman fans just want to see our hero as he was in the comics, getting punched through a tree by Doomsday, not having a dramatic family episode like you'd see on days of our lives.
To sum-up: If Marvel keeps on making movies that depict hardcore scenes, straight out of the comics, and DC tries to let an old classic compete, the movie industry will end up losing tons of money where good hardy comic violence could have triumphed.

Superman Returns was THE movie of the year. X men 3 made more money because it was the third in the series -- the first x men only made 150 million or so -- so a higher gross is expected. X men 3 was both dull and depressing (deaths, etc). No other movie was more fulfilling or gave that kid glee that Superman Returns did. Those who have not seen it, must see it. Hopefully in Imax 3D -- as it will never be seen on DVD in that format.

If you seriously believe that Hollywood is going to let the very successful Xmen franchise die, you need to do more homework. Hollywood is a money making town. And marvels' movies are just better and more interesting. Nuff said.

X3 the best picture of the series? Please.
While many of the film's faults were not the fault of the writers/director, it had a lot of problems. A major team member/character from the first two films dies... OFF CAMERA? Rogue appears in only 2 scenes? Nightcrawler disappears from the franchise completely? These all hurt the film... but were, apparently, all due to scheduling issues with the actors, so I give Ratner and the writers the benefit of the doubt that they wouldn't have done it that way had they had the chance.
There are tons of other problems though, that are squarely in the lap of the filmmakers... like how Magneto was portrayed as very cunning in the first two films, but in this one makes huge mistakes like leaving an associate who has reason to hate him in the hands of the US Government, yet neglects to change his plans or move his HQ even though said associate knows the location, and his plan!
I could go on... but I won't. Ultimately, it was OK. Not as good as X2, probably about as good or a little worse than the first one. Superman Returns was also okay, but felt a little too much like a soap opera for me.

Posters 1 and 9 are idiots. Ratner did a superb job with X3! Singer on the other hand should be ashamed of himself, he's probably hiding in the vastness off his mansion right now after the horrible job he did on Superman Returns. Thanks for ruining Superman Singer! *sight* Idiot!

I loved the first two X-men movies but didn’t see X-3, it just looked like a typical blow-em up summer movie.
General people can’t think about the depths of Superman's issues because they cannot see beyond the exterior or whatever is face-value, they only recognize brooding angst as portrayed via batman and spider-man and to them that angst translates to a "Dark" superhero.
Superman is of the old time where great warriors fall from grace and constantly search for efforts to redeem themselves and search for ways to help humanity.
Consequently Batman is more popular; his story is more of the common era of story telling. A normal man of normal means capable of extraordinary things, which make a hero like him relatable.
Superman returns was not a perfect movie, but it was great. I’d love to see a sequel but I don’t think audiences will flock to it. Which is really a shame.
