Indy 4 Update: They're Doing The Phantom Menace?
Filed under: Action, RumorMonger, Fandom, DIY/Filmmaking, George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Remakes and Sequels
In a move that's almost as rare as Paris Hilton doing something good for the community, Empire somehow managed to get George Lucas, Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford to shell out more details regarding the much-hyped Indiana Jones 4. And, when I say "details" I mean "really vague things that are both interesting and practicall useless."
Says Lucas, "We're basically going to do The Phantom Menace. People's expectations are way higher than you can deliver. You could just get killed for the whole thing ... We would do it for fun and just take the hit with the critics and the fans. The 'damned if you do, damned if you don't' situation has freed up an idea for a plot that was originally deemed too incendiary." Lucas goes on to talk about a "controversial" McGuffin the boys came up with awhile back that, at first, they were hesitant to take on. Now, though, it seems they are going ahead with it (whatever "it" is), minus the offending parts. I know, it's not much to go on, but it definitely piques my interest. What can be so controversial? An artifact from the holocaust? Lucas also noted they're eying production to start in mid-2007, with a release happening in 2008.

I don't think people disliked Phantom Menace because it didn't live up to expectations. I think people disliked it because it wasn't a very good movie.

I think it's so controversial because it's really going to suck. Considering that recently Lucas has been rereleasing his movies and there has been a lot of bad acting in Revenge of the Sith, my hopes aren't to high for Indy 4

I'm betting that, despite all the various spin we've been hearing from everyone involved, it boils down to a difference in opinion between Spielberg and Lucas. Spielberg is interested in making a real movie, Lucas wants to continue to produce the same purile crap he's been churning out for at least a decade. I love the Indiana Jones movies and was originally excited about another older Indy, but this has been stewing too long, and no one seems interested enough to really make this happen.

Is Lucas so out-of-touch that he doesn't realize what people generally think of The Phantom Menace?

Spielburg's done his fair share of pap, let's not forget - he royally screwed AI, and is at least partially responsible for the Star Wars prequels.
But, yeah - Lucas is deluded. Either that, or he just hates us, and wants to crap on the things we love.
I didn't care that he remastered Star Wars - hell, I was happy just to be able to see them at the cinema, being about two years too young to have done it first time round. He's capable of fine works, possibly. But he's still a numpty, and Indy 4 runs the risk of making me cry. Not a pretty sight.

The best thing that Lucas and Spielberg could do is hand the reigns over to someone with some new ideas and energy. The Phantom Meance? That is a real indication of how clueless Lucas is. Here's an idea, donate the $150 million to charity instead and save us all the grief.

Controversial? I would think it has something to do with Muslims and Jews and the Middle East. Everything controversial these days involves these groups. You can't swing a dead cat without someone being offended these days.

This movie can't be that bad and people need to give it a chance if ur expectations are too high then of course ur going to hate it.
Lucas and Spielberg are capable of some impressive work. Let's just hope that they can pull it through, but even if the movie does suck im still going to see it and i know half the people in here trashing it will also.

Yeah, since they've already done stories about artifacts of Judaism, Hinduism, and Christianity, maybe Indy will next discover the Heavenly Tablet upon which the Koran is written, or perhaps the Golden Plates given to Joseph Smith. A nice bookend (heh) to the Ten Commandments located in the Ark of the Covenant.
Setting it in Saudi Arabia or Iraq would make it topical (albeit in the 1950s or 60s). Setting it in Utah would make it picturesque.
The only question is who makes better baddies: proto-Islamicist terrorists or Mormon ninja missionary assassins.

Just to follow along with #4 (Rob H.)-
Indiana Jones 4: The Red Skull.
An older Indy finds out that the eeeevil from WWII has not been eliminated as he stumbles upon the Red Skull and his plans for the 4th Reich. The Red Skull uses radical Islamicists as his muscle, while he and his Nazi cadre plan to use a mystical sword of power (first discovered by Alexander the Great) to control the world.
[This will tie in to future Fantastic 4 movies as well, but not He-Man.]

Ooops, I meant a Captain America film, though it could work with Fantastic 4 as well.

Add 25 years to the last one, it puts them at the beginning of the 1960's. He goes to a small club in Liverpool and discovers a group of very sweaty young men playing in a band...
