BREAKING: Paramount Drops Cruise
Filed under: Deals, Paramount, Celebrities and Controversy, Distribution, Tom Cruise, Politics
Well, It's official: Paramount has ended a long-standing production deal with Tom Cruise. The 14-year-long relationship included the release and box-office success of films like Mission: Impossible, Top Gun and Days of Thunder, but a memo released today cited Cruise's recent public behavior as "unacceptable." Cruise's recent pronouncements -- about anti-depressant drugs, parenting and his enthusiastic embrace of Scientology -- have all led to negative press and public scrutiny. The subscription-only Wall Street Journal has the original story, including quotes from Viacom CEO Sumner Redstone like: "As much as we like him personally, we thought it was wrong to renew his deal." As Martha noted last month, the deal actually expired at the end of July, with negotiations apparently going on over the past 21 days. In the wake of Mel Gibson's recent role as tabloid-fodder, is big Hollywood trying to be pro-active, making sure star behavior doesn't affect the bottom line? Or is it just the economic realities of a fading star's trajectory? At this time, there was no formal response from Cruise or his producing partner Paula Wagner; we'll keep you posted with more about this story as it develops.

On the one hand, this guy can pull of some brilliant acting. On the other, arrogant holier than thou crackpots should be put completely out of the picture.
I am willing to say I liked MI3 a lot. Then I got out of the theater, and saw his exploits on camera again. If he is willing to revamp his image and take a while off, I think he could make himself less... strange.

tom's minimal intellectual capacity coupled with a cult like scientology created a monster. tom was a vulnerable man enjoying success in hollywood. scientology got him at the perfect time when he didn't know who he was or what his future held. the brainwashing is now unreversable unless he's kidnapped and taken far away to snap him out of the fog he is in. what a waste of talent. what a shame his comments have hurt so many people and continue to do so. what a shame he has no empathy for how his actions might affect others. he feels no shame but will definitely clean up his act to show a better image once he realizes how much money his stupidity is costing him.

I suspect that the unforgiving demon of impending male pattern baldness has played a part in Paramount's decision. Once the spot becomes visible box office receipts will plummet.

Thanks Jonathan Madamba...........I'm sure your internship at Paramount is going to go great since your recent comments.......in fact i hear there is a royal position available as harness checker for The Beast rollercoaster at Kings Island, I am sure you will be able to find just as many qualified 12 year olds on that ride as Tom Cruise.........thanks for nothing............

Did any of you catch the Hollywood news item about how Cruise's production company, Cruise/Wagner, has pulled the wool completely over old Hollywood's head. This contract dropping is simply a reaction to that, and a move toward making the studio system the top of the hierarchy again.
M:I:3 domestic take: about $338 million
Cruise's negotiated take out of that, as production partner and star: about $315 million

Jumping up and down on a couch proclaiming your love for someone doesn't make you look crazy. I've known people to claim their love for people and run in and out of traffic. What's crazier?

I think Jonathan brings up an interesting point, though. In a business where money is always the bottom line, why are they severing relations with someone who is consistently making them money, and doing it in a particularly public finger-wagging bridge-burning kind of way? I get the feeling that other behind the scenes things are going on here.

When I saw the Box Office for MI:3, I knew Paramount would come to this decision.
This is America, and you have the right to express your ideas and opinions, but not everyone has to agree with your point of view. And those who don't agree may not buy tickets to your film. They don't have to spend their money on your new CD, or your new book.
Years ago, the studios had stars under contract, and those stars had to live by strict codes of ethics that governed their off-screen behavior. Those days are long gone, and now celebrities are free to do what they like...so long as it does not affect the studio's profits. Tom and Mel may find that the only part of the studios they see for a while is the cold shoulder.

In Hollywood they say that you're only as good as your last picture, and in Tom Cruise's case, he's not so good. MI:3 should have made a lot more money, especially with a great director helming a known franchise, but Tom's antic's chopped it off at the knees. I wanted to see MI:3 myself when it first came out, but I was so sick of TC that I waited until after the all-important first weekend to see it. Some other studio will snatch him up, but in the meantime hopefully he'll calm down.

Paramount made a big mistake. There is no negative press currently out there that is going to stop people from seeing a Tom Cruise flick. What he does with his life isn't that much of anyones concern to not see his movies. Crazy or eccentric, I doesn't really matter. Chances are you're not going to have a one-on-one with him. His job is entertain through his acting and he still accomplishes that.

The significance of this will truly be known in the coming months: will any studio snap him up, or is he completely radioactive?
