Is Cruise's Next a Comedy?
Filed under: Comedy, Casting, RumorMonger, Newsstand, Tom Cruise
On the heels of Tom Cruise and company's proud announcement yesterday that they not only have $100 million to burn, but also have already chosen his next project, tongues around the internet started wagging, trying to figure out what that film will be. The best lead, oddly enough, may have been tracked down by mainstream staple Entertainment Weekly, which reported recently that Cruise has held meetings with none other than Judd Apatow, the box office magician behind The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby and Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (he wrote and directed the first and produced the other two). While meetings in no way mean anything concrete, Apatow sounded pretty optimistic when he spoke with EW, saying "We've had great conversations -- I hope something real comes out of it." What do you guys think of Cruise making a comedy? While my knee-jerk reaction was a negative one, when I thought about it more I realized working with Apatow might be a brilliant move by Cruise: If he can turn in a non-manic, convincingly self-effacing performance, that might go a long way towards getting him back in the good graces of those he's turned off over the past year.

I keep wondering if Sumner Redstone knows something we don't (yet) or if the Paramount dumping was simply based on the facts that are out there: weird antics and slumping grosses.

The first step to improve his situation is to genuinely acknowledge he has had problems in the past. Recent behaviours do not yet give this impression. So, for me, he might as well become a merman in a Farelly Brothers movie, this won't change anything.

He's a crazy loved up scientologist fruitcake with some bizarre ideas about healthcare.
He's also a pretty good actor.
At least he's not a scottish, australian, anti-semitic alcoholic loon!
Actually, we need to bring the better blood forward - give more jobs to other better actors who don't ask for as much money.

I already threw away all my Tom Cruise DVD's: Vanilla Sky, MI:I, MI:II, Jerry Maguire, and Minority Report. One thing, I never did watch them again and they were taking up vaulable real estate in my tiny apartment.
I never buy DVD's anymore.

I feel like an outsider here: I have no Tom Cruise DVD to throw away! I haven't even bought a movie ticket to one of his movie! I might have seen one or two on TV (Color of Money and Rainman - for Newman & Hoffman). I was never impressed by Tom, so I cannot join the big dump. Sigh.
Again, TC is purely a PR creation. If he'll invest some of his money to crank the machine up (and keep his mouth shut for eternity), people may buy the image of "funny Tom" - after all, they bought Tom the hero. But it'll take lots of money and lots of restraint from TC.

Well my last post revolving around tom was a negative one. I do retract my previous harsh comments, especially those that were directed to pro-Cruise Johnathan......In retrospect, i really don't care what Cruise promotes or demotes anymore. If everyone is cool with Woody Allen, then i see no reason why the radical ideas of Cruise should make someone throw away all his DVD's. Besides, many of them are very good. Just enjoy his decemt movies. He's an actor, not a politician, and his work (or crazy ideas) will not affect your personal life. I think he should do some completely un-Cruise-like comedy.......it would be good to get some laughs from Cruise himself instead of getting them from everyone else making fun of him.
