The Many Faces of Megatron

Have you seen the new Transformers images? If you haven't, follow the link below. They've created quite a stir among the geek community, and really with anyone who loves the Transformers. Why? Well really, because they don't look like the Transformers as we knew them in times past. Sure, they've undergone various incarnations before -- and they don't always look exactly the same -- but this change, for whatever reasons, has been a tough pill for many to swallow. In case you don't know what all the hubbub is about, or if you simply want to have a really good look at what you already know, the folks over at Seibertron have put together a nice little collage featuring many Megatrons of times past with a comparative shot of "Megatron on Michael Bay." Go have a look and see what you think. So, are the changes for the better? Some people (perhaps less cynical than you and I) like the new style. It reflects some edge and pizazz. Others look at it and say "What the %$!& did you do to Megatron?!" My opinions on director Michael Bay are well documented already, but I keep wanting to give the man a chance. I desperately want this movie to be great. If you find these changes for the better, I'd love for you to convince me to agree with you. ...

First of all, I'm a huge fan of the G1 Transformers and am familiar enough with the other incarnations. Secondly, I think Michael Bay is a hack director who relies too much on explosions, quick cuts and loud music to tell his stories. Thirdly, I think he is perfect for this project and is doing a great job.
Transformers is a concept that appeals to the rowdy little kid in us that loves robots and trucks and jets. Hasbro just took the flimsiest of concepts to bring all this together in order to make the coolest toys ever and put out a 1/2 hour advertisement in order to sell us these cool toys. This movie isn't for those of us who grew up with the Tranformers, but for the current crop of 8 year olds who just want to see giant robots turn into jets and blow crap up. These kids want their $100 million CGI robots to look like $100 million CGI robots and not the blocky, poorly animated robots from 20 years ago.

Yep - I'm with Rob H. on this one.
Personally, I'm not too sure about Megatron's new look, but that's an aesthetic thing, not a desire to see the original. Megatron turning into a pistol would mean either he'd have to shrink during his transformation, or that his robot form would be about eight inches tall. Neither prospect is good.
As long as Michael Bay does what Michael Bay does best - explosions, noise, et al - then the film's on to a good thing.

Mark, I would love to convince you that the changes are for the better... but I am afraid that is just not the case.
This movie is going to be as bad as 'Wesley Crusher staring in It's a Wonderful Life'. Maybe even as bad as 'Richard Simmons staring in The Graduate'.
Why couldn't Mike Bay just make a GoBots movie and leave my happy childhood alone... what's next??? Rosie O'Donnell in the Flintstones?

Being a fan of Transformers from the beginning, I can't see how changes these radical are necessary or deemed relevant at all. Megaton looks like a cross between a Terminator exo-skeleton and a high tech garbabe dispsosal/toilet for a head. Prime isn't as bad, but why add flames? Anyone who knows anything about Prime, knows he's bad a$$,sorry no flames needed. The other thing is, I can understand updating some of the characters, since technology has came a long ways since Transformers was 1st introduced 20+ years ago, but do we really need to change thier names too? Why, Soundwave isn't a cool enough name? In closing, i see test shots, pics, desciptions of this movie, and my heart just feels with dread. i have a 11 year old, and tell her of how Transformers was one of the cartoons that helped shape me as a person, but when you take the soul out of something like this, it doesn't deserve to carry the name Transformers. Might as well call it Michael Bay presents Go Bots 07.
