Radcliffe Heads for the Telly
Filed under: Drama, Casting, Newsstand, Harry Potter
In a clear (and very wise) effort to prove he can play things other than a boy wizard, Daniel Radcliffe has revealed plans to follow up his on-stage, "HOLY CRAP, HARRY POTTER'S NAKED!" star turn in Equus next year with a starring role in a World War I-themed television movie. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Radcliffe will play Jack Kipling in My Boy Jack, an ITV film based on a play by David Haig (who will also appear in the movie, playing Rudyard Kipling). The play is based on a real event in Kipling's life: he used his connections to get his 17-year-old son into the Irish Guards, "even though his son had been turned down for health reasons by the military many times before." You can see where this is going, can't you? Yep, Jack goes missing, and his body is never found. My Lord that's depressing -- I'm guessing this one is going to be a hardcore, stiff-upper-lip tear-jerker. Though it's unlikely the movie will ever air here in the U.S., I'm sure if it does well you American Potterites will at least be able to pick up a U.K. DVD of the thing (assuming you've already got that region-free player, of course).

I have no doubt that this will be shown either on PBS or A&E (hopefully not on the channel that shows the Sopranos, because I don't get that channel- although I would buy it somehow to see this movie). I agree that this should be a real tear jerker (God I love those). It is unfortunate that you guys don't show the pictures that were released along with the press release because Holy mother of God, that boy is growing up handsome (yes, I am female)
On another note, may I add how I am enjoying your increase coverage of all things Potter (esp. Dan Radcliffe)-related! Thank you!

Well its good to see that hes wanting to try new things, I agree he cant be Harry Potter forever. However it makes you wander if he'll be able to break away from that "Harry Potter" role. Or if he'll be known as the boy who lived forever,no matter what he does.

i think he will be a grreat actor in many movies to come. Unlike american movie stars who are unable to break away from the main stream culture inwhich they are created, this actor shows promise especialy when he was not "Going to make it past the second movie because of puberty". only in due time will be able to tell.
P.S. I am an american, who is a great fan of GOOD movies.

I BELIEVE THIS TEENAGER WILL WOW AUDIENCES WITH BEING SOMEONE OTHER THAN "HARRY". I LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING HIM OUTSIDE THE CHARACTER OF HARRY POTTER. IT WILL DEFINTELY PROVE IF HE IS HERE TO STAY OR JUST A CHILD ACTOR. GOOD LUCK DANIEL.

I am of course a HUGE Harry Potter movie fan but one of the reasons that I love them so much is because of gorgeous and extremely talented Daniel Radcliffe. I am very glad to hear that he is branching out into other acting roles so that people can see what an amazing young actor he is. Yes he is the perfect Harry Potter and no other actor could do the role of Harry justice accept Daniel. But, he wont be playing Harry forever and people should not stereotype him or any of the other talented young actors and actresses in the Harry Potter films. I wish nothing but the best for Daniel Radcliffe and all the other teen actors in the Harry Potter films. Because they are all acceptional teens and have bright futures in the acting business.
