Legendary Ready for More Superman

Bryan Singer was king of the world when he departed the X-Men franchise for the Man of Steel. Singer was set to breath life back into an exhausted franchise, and expectations were rightfully high. Superman Returns was a good movie. Generally, critics and audiences agreed on this fact. It was good ... but it wasn't great. And box office receipts reflected such. It brought in okay money, but not nearly as much money as was hoped, especially given the large budget of the film. Before you could say "truth, justice, and all that stuff," Warner Brothers was beginning to backpedal away from their lofty sequel ambitions. An ultimatum quickly came down: make 200 million or no sequel. Even then, Warner has indicated a much smaller budget for the next Superman film.Financing partner Legendary, however, is insisting none of this worries them in the slightest. Legendary insists the company is turning a profit on Returns, and is still fully interested in financing a a sequel. This is certainly good news for Singer, who (as mentioned above) will be working on a shorter leash from Warners. We probably haven't seen the end of Singer's run with the Man of Steel.

Uhm, didn't Legendary only contribute $25-30 million to the $260 million+ budget? Maybe their insurance money is making them a profit off it. It certainly isn't off *Lady in the Water*.
Maybe the Broken Lizard gang can crank out some more films for them so they don't become the next Carolco.

That is too bad. I think besides some of the Planet's staff, Singer did a good jorb. He totally captured the way the original films were made.

the Paris part is a joke. said...
i for one think this is great news. he had a fantastic feel for what a physically invulnerable hero would go through, and as long as he gets a new (to the movie medium) villain that's a bit more action oriented, i think it'll be great.
oh, and Paris for Lois Lane!!

He did indeed. He practically copied the first film...

I did enjoy Superman Returns, and I'm glad there will be a sequel, but I also agree that Singer took too much from the Donner films. He said in a recent interview that he'd go all 'Wrath of Khan' in the sequel to Superman Returns, which I hope means he'll do what Trek did and dump the slow-paced drama of the first movie and give us a real action/adventure/romance that we can cheer about.

Let me save you all $10.00 (or whatever admission price movies will be) and tell you what the next Superman movie will be about--General Zod will come to earth along with Ursa and Non right about the time Superman relinquishes his powers so he can live a quiet family life with Lois and their boy. Zod and his cronies will raise a bit of havok, and eventually take over the United Nations building where all the world leaders just happen to be meeting. Threatened with world annhilation, the world leaders all agree that Zod will rule the world, and they cry out for Superman, via breaking news report, and Zod calls out Superman. Realizing that he's needed, Clark makes his way back to the Fortress of Solitude, where he finds just one more crystal containing the last remaining energy of Krypton, thereby regaining his powers, so he can now save the world from Zod. He meets Zod, Ursa and Non, has a battle with them, and one of them just happens to capture Lois and her son while Lois tries to get close enough to the action, followed by her son who didn't stay put like he was told to by Mommy. So they all wind up at the Fortress of Solitude, and Superman tricks them into making him go into a cell where they are led to believe he will lose his powers, but in reality, he's protected while Zod, Ursa, and Non lose their powers. Then they are defeated, but then tragedy strikes when the kid loses his powers as well, and doesn't realize it, so when he tries to fly, he falls to his death, while the realization of what happened falls upon Superman and Lois too late for them to do anything about it. Or maybe he didn't really lose his powers, and surprises everyone with his new found ability to fly like Daddy.
My point is, if Superman Returns was any indication (i.e. lame rehash of original Superman film), then the sequel will no doubt suck as much, if not more so.
Maybe an even better idea would be to say that everything that happened in SR was all a dream, and then they can start fresh with a better movie (hey, it worked for "Dallas"), a new start, and just leave the memory of Christopher Reeve alone.
