No Quidditch in Harry Potter 5

OK, Harry Potter fans, get ready to vent. According to a Warner Bros. spokesperson, there will be no quidditch sequence, I repeat, no quidditch sequence in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. As the spokesperson told England's The Sun, "It would be wonderful to include every single page of the book. But as with [all] Harry Potter films, elements have had to be omitted." The spokesperson is also reported to have declared the reason for the omission to be time constraints. Really? It isn't because of redundancy? Sure, I can appreciate watching Daniel Radcliffe ride around on his broomstick -- the special effects in the quidditch scenes always look great -- but it is one element that hasn't really offered anything new to the series since the first film. Anyway, I may not remember the fifth book too well, but doesn't it take place outside of Hogwarts? I don't even recall a quidditch part in the book (I know, you fans will remind me), so it couldn't have been too integral (and I know, you will correct me here, too) to the plot, right? As for any whiners out there, let's see you try to make a good movie out of such a gigantic book. Is it not enough that the producers have been hard at work casting every actor in the U.K. in every little role, so as to please you? What is worse? Omitting quidditch, or not casting a famliar name as your favorite new character introduced in Order of the Phoenix?

ok i have been a big fan of harry potter every since my son read me part of the first book and no it is not just for kids grownup's like it to i have read all of the books and have loved all of them they are fill'ed with advanture and laughter,i could not waite when i heard that they where going to make the harry potter movies and could not waite till the next movie came out, i loved four of the movies all that is till harry potter 5 again i read the book and loved it but the movie was realy sorry they left out the most importing parts that made the story good like when rons to brothers rebaled against them for firing the headmaster and when mrs wesly is trying to clean out harry's godfather's house and comes upone the bogers and starts crying because she thinks she is seeing her family geting killed.but im not going to give up on the movies yet i hope the next one is more true to the book.i know they cant put every thing in the movies it would be to long but i would still watch them it would be truer to the book if they did tho

The Quidditch in the fifth book is part of a subplot in which Harry ends up not being on the team, but all the Weasleys are. It was actually one of my favorite parts of the book, because I got a little tired of Harry's attitude after hundreds of pages of Sullen Teen, and the Weasleys were all so much fun. I hope the film can keep the subplot even if we don't see an actual match. (This was probably my least favorite book in the series -- I liked the sixth one much better.)

I dunno, I could've done with a little less Quidditch in the earlier movies and books, to be perfectly honest...

Honestly, I think the whole Quidditch subplot is key. It draws the lines between Harry and Dolores Umbridge. Missing try-outs, the fight between Harry and Malfoy after the match...these are important plot points! But this is the longest book thus far. We'll be lucky to get all of the really HUGE plot points in.
P.S. I like the 5th book WAY better than the 6th. I felt like she was really losing steam with the 6th and just tried to write it as quickly as possible. It lacks the quality of the others.

I am happy with the WB's decision to take out Quidditch, this game at least in this film doesn't bring anything to the MAIN PLOT of the book, I am glad they will use that screen time to more important things, plus we know that JKR is the one who approve the scripts, so if she thought that Quidditch was really necessary for the movie she would have talk to the WB people for them to add bits of the game in the movie, also as we all know JK Rowling is tired of writing about Quidditch that is why she was happy that she would not have to write more Quidditch for book 7 because Harry will be out of school looking for Voldemort.

Well, while I think it would have been wickedly cool to have seen more quidditch in the last movie (world cup and all). No harm, no foul in this one. the book is huge! They could possible have made this one into several movies and we would still be missing sub-plots. Though it will be interesting to see how they bring it all together after the last movies depressingly lack-luster ending in which there was no evidence of any anti-voldermort movie/group. Excpet of course a half-arsed ight between dumbledore and the minister of magic. Oh man, I totally sound like a dork. Oh well.

Quidditch is a poorly designed sport anyway. The less of it the better.

I think the Quidditch in Book 5 is important. It focuses on Ron and how he begins to excel in spite of Harry's fame. Remember..."Weasley is our king! He never lets the Quaffle in."

Even though the Quidditch scene tells alot about what happens in the 6th book, the more important scene's should be getting that extra film that would be the Quidditch scene if it was in there so i guess it can be a good thing but it is a bad thing for the people who haven't read the books, it'd probably confuse them.

Actually each part of the Harry Potter books is important to the fans. We do, however, understand that Warner Brothers can not cater to the fanatics who would love to see every scene. I was saddened that the last movie chose to leave out Winky and Ludo Bagman who make the book interesting, more endearing and colorful. Quiddich should be mentioned if not seen in the 5th movie and certianly "Weasley is our King" needs to be sung for the movie to be a accurate account of the true story....:) And we all know it IS true.

As a gamer I've always been annoyed by Quidditch and other games constructed in literature (i.e. all of Yu-gi-oh!). A game mechanic that ends the game and throws out all other progress that was made during the match (catching the snitch) is idiotic and would never work.

Okay, I know that it's a large book and they have to leave out a lot of things. But as said before this post, they absolutely have to add the "Weasley Is Our King" song!
I mean, even if it's just sung in the background before they switch to another scene or something... I know the book wouldn't be the same without the annoying, "Weasley was born in a bin, he always lets the Quaffle in, Weasley will make sure we win,
Weasley is our King." that gets stuck in your head for hours to a tune that you aren't even sure how got in your head (that sounds an aweful lot like Mary Had A Little Lamb...)
So, they should still keep that part in even if they have to omit a lot of stuff.

I agree with Paot. Each part of the books are important. I was really disappointed that the Veela weren't shown in the last movie. I hope the next director doesn't cheap it up like the last. I have this fantasy that Peter Jackson will undertake the telling of the Harry Potter series before I leave the planet.

I agree that even if you don't actually see quidditch that weasleys are king is very important set up for his success. Some how that has to be in the movie

Eliot: catching the snitch ends the game, but doesn't toss out everything that came before it. The team that is ahead in points wins and while that is usually the team that catches the snitch, (due to the number of points it earns you) it is not always.
And for the thread: why don't they just make two movies out of the content of both books? The studio would make more money and the fans would be happier with the full coverage.

I don't really mind there not being any Quidditch in the movie, but I think that "Weasley Is Our King" is a crucial part of the movie... Ok, not crucial, but very entertaining :-)

I agree that in the last movie more should have been added to the World Cup, but since Harry is expelled from the team in the 5th it makes sense that no quidditch would be shown, but it would be nice to mention that he was kicked off...

I have enjoyed the books and can't wait for the 7th to come out but I don't like the fact that the omissions keep making poor plot directions unless you just remove Ron from the movie completely. That is stupid that they keep removing good scenes and making it darker and not showing the growth of the characters. Ron has grown so much and the so has Harry they are able to support each other but make their friendship the most important part of their lives. The training of the wizards had better not be omitted and the confrontation with the death eaters one-on-one, they are all important to preparing for the 6th book. Are they already working on the 6th movie at the same time.... I heard they were starting it before Daniel, Rupert and Emma get too old to play the parts and lose interest. Except who could lose interest in money for the future, the brit kids seem to have a better hold on themselves than american kids with that kind of money. They always seem routed to the soil and not big headed. I look forward to the many moments ahead in seeing the new movies.

The Quidditch thing is a huge part of the struggle between Harry and Umbridge; it also allows Ron to finally accomplish something in his own right. Although I'm not a fan of Ron, I hate how the films have marginalized him. In the book he's one of the most well-drawn characters; in the movie he is comic relief. He has a wonderful moment in the third book, where his great loyalty, courage, and self-sacrifice shine through, and the movie gives it to Hermione, who has more than enough "moments" of her own (she's a bundle of girlpower in that one, like a little pink Power Ranger). Of course, I must confess that the PoA movie was superb.
Getting back to Quidditch. . . I agree with Kayla; it makes sense that we wouldn't see a Quidditch sequence, since Harry got kicked off the team, but they should reference it if they can. Given what happens in the 6th book, they've got to make Ron as strong a character as Hermione.
On Quidditch in the movies in general: The scenes are fun, but they always do something absurd - having Harry stand on his broom, fly around in the ditch, or ascend into the stratosphere where his goggles freeze up, not to mention all the illegal pushing and shoving. Like J.K., the filmmakers probably feel they've got to do kwirky (sp?) things to make it interesting. The World Cup, I think, is best left to Rowling and the imagination. It would've taken much to long to achieve the intensity of that match on screen.
They really do their best with the films. If GoF seemed "cheap," it was because the MANY action scenes were indispensable and crowded out everything else. Only a miniseries could contain the complexity of the later books.
P.S. Jette K. -- Thank you! I was SO sick of "Sullen Teen," I couldn't stand it. It's hard to convey self-pity without annoying the reader. J.K. should've read Garth Nix's "Lirael" before she wrote OotP.

Personaly I liked everylast book, but the Umbridge which I wanted to kill personaly. And I do agree about the need to have two movies to be able to get the whole plot into the 6th story. Not enough was in the last movie so much was left out. We need TWO for #5 at the least. Please at least Think about it? I know most of the fans WOULD NOT mind in the least.
