Shatner and Nimoy Back for Next Trek?
Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Paramount, RumorMonger, Fandom, DIY/Filmmaking, Remakes and Sequels
And the rumors continue to swirl around Star Trek XI, folks. Not long after an "unnamed studio source" basically told all trekkies/trekkers (that's right, I'm including everyone) to f*ck off because J.J. Abrams and the gang were going to spit out a Trek film on their own terms (with or without fan approval), word comes from Spock (Leonard Nimoy) himself that some of our old friends may be appearancing in the new flick.
Up until this point, we knew William Shatner (Captain Kirk) was involved in casting choices, but weren't sure whether that meant he would also show up on screen. After all, the plot is said to revolve around a young Kirk and Spock as they begin their Academy training. Despite this, according to Nimoy, there may still be room for the classic duo to reunite. He says, "The head of production at Paramount called my agency to tell them about this project and they are aware of Bill's and my contribution to the franchise, and they'd like us to know they might want some involvement. It was all very, very general. They might possibly want Bill and I to set up the story as a flashback. But that's just conjecture on my part."
Hmm, why do I immediately envision an older Kirk and Spock, gathering a group of kids around a campfire and opening Star Trek XI by saying something along the lines of, "Ya know kids, Spock and I were right around your age when we first met. In fact, we were just about to begin our Academy training ..."? Ugh. I'm not crazy about it. You?

Well, a Star Trek XI with Shatner and Nimoy in those roles would definitely be better than the alternative, but I'm still not thrilled with the whole concept. Personally, I think they've still got so much story to tell post-Voyager/Nemesis not to do another follow-up series/movie.

I don't know. It all still sounds better than the opening to Insurrection.
And, in fact, than the end of Insurrection.
God I hated that film.

Pretty soon, we will be living in the world of Star Trek and will not need movies. And I'm sure that we are all going to die! Man can not handle anything, especially hi-tech life. Enjoy the movies while you can... Have a nice day

Maybe it's the year 3000 and a former pizza delivery boy, now intergalactic delivery boy, fondly remembers how important Star Trek was to his life and finds the heads of Bill Shatner and Leonard Nimoy reminiscing about the good ol' days.

I love these guys. But where would they fit in the whole Lost/Alias scenario? Sorry, I am still sour about that one and feel no sense of anticipation about this, good ol' trekker that I am.

Looks like they're (Abrams/Berman/et al.) hedgeing their bets with this idea. It'll get fans back in the theater and do as much as possible to guarantee the film's success.
I still hate the film's premise, especially when there is so much post-DS9 story fodder to choose from. Going back strikes me as boring and incidental (and I think was detrimental to Enterprise) while going forward strikes me as interesting and exciting. Then again, Abrams rocked MI:3, which had no right to be good! :)

Nimoy should play Sarek, and Kirk should be in makeup as a Klingon commander. Now that'd be a cameo worth seeing.

They should set a movie in the mirror universe. That would be right up Abrams' alley.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but according to the timeline, Kirk is DEAD, isn't he? He died, for good, at the end of Generations, right?

There is one problem with the proposed plot (as I understand it). As far as I know, Spock and Kirk never met at Starfleet Academy. By the time Kirk went to the Academy, Spock was already serving on the Enterprise. They meet for the first time when Kirk is given command of the Enterprise after Pike becomes ill.
Paramount should really get some people who know and love Star Trek to work on the next movie. It's this kind of historical rewriting that ruined Enterprise (all that Xindi crap). If they really want to do a "historical" Star Trek movie, maybe they should tell the story of the Earth-Romulan War. It was skipped in Enterprise and has never been filmed/told.
But I really agree with the other commentors, there is so much story to tell about the Federation after the Dominion War and ST:Nemesis. What's going on politically in the Alpha Quadrant? How is Odo doing in the Gamma Quadrant? Etc. etc. Lots of potentially great stories there. You can even setup a movie with Picard, Janeway and Sisko!

As a long time ST fan (I remember watching the first week it premiered in the late '60s) in addition to a JJ Abrams fan (ditto, first week Alias, Lost, etc) I am very interested in seeing what comes from this marriage and I have no doubts that it could ROCK if done right. I went through a period when I was an avid reader of all the myriad of books that were out there for all the ST series and I have to admit, some of my absolute favorites were set in the exact timeframe that the Abrams film concept is supposed to take place.
I totally agree that there are plenty of stories that can be told about the post Dominion war and all the scenerios we already know about, I'm not disagreeing with that a bit. My viewpoint is that there is a reason why the original series and later the original set of films are so popular and it has to do with the characters involved. Of course, Mister Shatner (and company) would have us believe that without his presence there can be no James Tiberius Kirk but that simply isn't so. Let's be practical here, we've lost several of the original cast and the remainder is far too old to come back and do it all over again. By setting the story back to when they were all at the Academy, all the characters can be recast and reinvented with minimal disruption to the ST universe as we know it. That's all the fictionalized novels EVER do - they take what we know and invent something that could possibly exist within the canon that is already out there for the fans.
This is really a Win-Win for the fans and the studio. We get to enjoy more original stories featuring the original cast of characters without having to suffer through seeing an 80 year old Kirk and Bill Shatner's pension for overacting. Leave him on Boston Legal where he belongs! Give us some new blood to work with here. I return to my first reason I gave that I knew it would work, that the novelizations I read set in this timeframe were both excellent and fresh once again. Give it a chance people! You may be pleasantly surprised with the outcome!

I think that the biggest reason for this movie is Rick Berman and Brannon Braga getting together at their conference room at Paramount and Rick says to Brannon, Mr. Seven Of Nine (he married Jeri Ryan after the series finale of "Voyager"): "Let's see if we can resurrect ST enough to get the fans to suffer through another one of our eejit ideas, so we can get them to at least pay $7.50 for a ticket to a lame-ass movie with the name 'Star Trek' on it...and maybe this time, they won't feel like they got dragged into the theater under false pretenses, like they did after they came and saw 'Insurrection' and 'Nemesis'! You know, our last two total bombs! That's not counting how we slaughtered 'Enterprise' and made all the Trekkies out there feel like they'd not only been lied to but cheated out of all that time they spent watching 'Enterprise' that they could've spent doing something else that was more interesting and worthwhile! They spent four years worth of shows waiting for the show to get interesting, and when it finally did...we cancelled the show!"
And Brannon says, "Yeah! I bet we can do it if we get a new screenwriter involved who knows absolutely f***ing nothing about the already-stated-and-established history of the Kirk/Spock relationship, so they can screw it all up and piss off the fans as much as possible!"
While the ghosts of Gene Roddenberry, DeForrest Kelley and James Doohan float around them and are grumbling to each other, "Too bad we're just ghosts, or we could actually save Star Trek from these fools. Every single time these eejits put their heads together and come up with what they consider to be an exceptionally brilliant idea, they make the rest of us all look like total eejits."
And, somewhere out there, the Prophets are also grumbling: "The Sisko needs to be sent home. How do we send him home if we don't get a Deep Space Nine movie to do it in? That book that that idiot S.E. Perry wrote just didn't do it right."
Odo also wants to come visit Colonel Kira; Kasidy is still waiting to give birth to the Child of the Emissary (seven years later), it must be the longest pregnancy in human history; Ezri and Julian have still just started their relationship, Worf has just started his ambassadorship from Earth to Qo'Nos...
Time has stopped in the Bajoran sector while Berman, Braga and Associates has ignored it and went on with totally stupid, piss-off-the-fans ideas.
And here's another one. I'd love to see how they mangle the whole history of Ensigns Kirk and Spock, who was actually an Academy-graduated lieutenant at the time that Kirk was entering Starfleet Academy...
But hey, when has forty-year-old-already-established canon ever bothered Berman, Braga and Associates? They figure that us fans will just eat up anything they do because they slap the label "Star Trek" on it.
Can anyone guess how I feel about them yet? >:(

Paramount execs should take fan opinion with a grain of salt. Fans threatened boycotts and predicted the end of the Star Trek franchise when Spock was to be killed in ST II, and also said "The Next Generation" would never fly. Nevermind the plot or premise. At $10 ticket prices, it just better be good.

As quite a few others have already stated, Some of us have been waiting a long time for something to bring DS9 up to date. I grant you that the show wasn't as popular as it's two predecessors, supposedly due to some of it's darker overtones, but there is great deal of leeway for more than just a few movies in that particular storyline.

What? No more Star Trek? Does the universe suddenly come to an end after all the original ST characters (or their portrayers) are gone? What about "Son of Spock"? What about "Alien vs. The Federation", or "Borg vs. Predator"? Or did "Q" finally decide to snuff out mankind's existence after all?
Our grandchildren could still be watching new Star Trek movies or serials long after we are gone. All it takes is someone with a little imagination and inspiration.

WHAT WOULD BE WRONG WITH A FLASHBACK OR PREQUILL AS MOST ALL THE SERIES STUFF IS GETTING ON WITH. IN STEAD OF THE CAMPFIRE,MUCH TOO CAMPY THERE, THEY SHOULD APPEAR AS SENIOR RETIRED OFFICERS REQUESTED TO ADDRESS A COMMENCEMENT CLASS AND THEN BRACKETED BY A FEW STUDENTS AFTERWARD TO TELL THEM ABOUT THEIR HISTORY AND TELL SOME FACTS ABOUT THERE MEETING AND ONWARD. jUST MY THOUGHTS ON THE DEAL.
